Description

W. HUBBARD.
Improvement in Hooks for Chandeliers, &c.
Patented' Sep.3, 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER HUBBARD, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, .ASSIGNOR TO BRADLEY 8t HUBBARD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOOKS FDR CHANDELIER S, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,100, dated September 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER HUBBARD, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Chandelier-Hooks and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full clear, and exact description of the the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents in Figure 1, a side view of the hook, and in Fig. 2 a longitudinal central section.
This invention relates to an improvement in the article of manufacture known to the trade as chandelier-hooktl1at is to say. a hook designed to be secured in the ceiling or other point by which to suspend a hanging lamp or chandelier. These require a boss or enlargement at the base to protect the plastering and cover the breaking away of the plastering around the hook which is unavoidable in screwing in the hook. These hooks have usually been formed either from cast metal entire-that is, the screw, hook, and boss-or the hook and boss of cast metal, se-
- cured to a wrought-metal screw in the process of casting. The great objection to these hooks arises from their liability to break from any sudden strain or blow to which they may be subjected. The object of my invention is to overcome this difficulty; and it consists in a wrought-metal hook and screw formed from one and the same piece of wrought metal, hav ing the boss or enlargement cast thereon.
A is the hook B the screw-these formed from wrought metal, and may be the common screw-hook, and ornamented by stamping, or left plain. These are placed in a mold having a cavity formed therein at the base of the hook of the shape required for the boss. In this cavity the metal is poured and the boss C formed, the cast metal firmly attaching itself to the wrought-metal body. This boss .may be of any desired style, and extend to a greater or less extent onto the-hook, and ornamented to suit the requirements of the trade. This hook, therefore, possesses all the qualities of a wrought-metal hook with the ornamental advantages of a cast-metal hook.
I claim as my invention- As an article of manufacture, the hereindescribed chandclierhook, the hook and screw formed from one and the same piece of wrought metal, and provided with the boss C, all the parts exposed, except the boss, being wrought metal, substantially as set forth.
WALTER HUBBARD.
