Be it known that I, W'nns'rnn C. Es'rns, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a receptacle, and more particularly to that type of receptacles in which wooden box containers are included.
Heretofore in receptacles of this class it has been customary to provide a body memher having a suitable chamber therein to receive the contents of the receptacle and a cap or cover adapted to fit over the open end of the body member. In this form, however, the cap or cover is readily removable,so far so in many instances, as to become accidentally separated from the body member and lost. I am aware furthermore, that in many instances, the upper outer surface of this type of receptacles has been provided with a screw-thread to be engaged by a screw-thread on the inner face of the flange forming part of the cap or cover, so that the cap or cover may be screwed to position on the upper reduced end of the body member. While this construction obviously maintains the cap or cover in position against accidental displacement, the cost of construction is relatively high. The object of my invention to overcome these difficulties by providing a receptacle fitted with a cover which snaps into place so that it cannot be accidentally separated from the body member and in which the construction is such that the cost of production is not materially greater than that of manufacturing the ordinary receptacle with the relatively loose fitting cap or cover.
In carrying out my invention, the receptacle is preferably cylindrical in form and is provided at its open end with a reduced section, a portion of which is recessed or mortised, while the cap or cover is fitted with a flange as is customary, but the flange is so made as to act as a tenon. The size of these parts is such that the cap will snap over the reduced end of the body of the receptacle, and when in place, the tenonportlon of the ca will fit into the recessed or mortised portion of the reduced end of the body member, so as to prevent the cap from becoming accidentally removed from Specification of Letters Patent.

In carrying out my invention, as will be seen by reference to the drawings, the receptacle preferably comprises a cylindrical body member made of Wood or other similar material, havin the side walls 10 and a bottom wall 11. This is fitted with a cap or cover 12, providing a chamber 13 for the contents of the receptacle, irrespective of What the contents may be. As is customary in receptacles of this kind, the outer or open end of the body member is reduced in diameter as indicated at 14, providing a shoulder 15, against which the edge of the flange of the cover may abut when the cap is in position.
In carrying out my invention, however, the outer face of the reduced portion 14 is recessed or mortised as indicated at 16 for a predetermined distance, while the outer portion of this face of the reduced end of the body member is preferably parallel with the corresponding side walls 10, as indicated at 17, although of course other formations may be employed to serve the same or like purposes. Also as is customary, the cap or cover 12 is provided with a flange 18. which, as indicated, is of the same outer diameter as the outer diameter of the walls 10 of the body member of the receptacle. The inner face of this flange 18. however, is recessed or tapered as indicated at 19, so as to permit the flange 18 to act as a tenon.
The greater inner diameter of the flange or tenon 18 is slightly less than the outer. diameter or that portion 17 of the reduced end of the body member of the receptacle.
Now as will be understood, due to the resiliency of the flange or tenon part of the cap. as well as of the mortised reduced end of the body member, the cap may be snapped to position as indicated in Fig. 1, and also by the resiliency of these parts, the tenon portions of the cap will fit the recessed or mortised portion of the reduced end of the body member, so as to maintain. the cap or cover in position With sufiicient friction to prevent the same from becoming accidentally displaced. As Will be furthermore understood, While I have hereinbefore described and have illustrated in the drawings a structure in which the mortised member is in the body of the receptacle, and the tenon member in the cap, these parts may be reversed Without departing from the nature and spirit of this invention.
By referring to Fig. i, it will be seen that instead of constructing the flange 18 of the cover to have a continuous taper on its inner face, the inner face of this flange may have a portion, for a predetermined distance, made parallel to the outer surface of the cap and body, and the inner or remaining portion recessed or mortised as indicated at 21. In this structure, the inner diameter of that portion :20 of the inner face of the flange 18 is slightly less than the outer surface of the similar parallel portion 17 of the reduced end 14 of the body member, so that it is necessary to force these surfaces against one another in placing the cap in position, it being understood of course, that When in position, the parallel face 20 on the inner surface of theflange of the cap is received in the mortised portion of the reduced end 14 of the body member, While the parallel face of the reduced end of the body member is received in the recessed or mortised portion of the cap.
I claim as my invention:
1. A receptacle comprising a body member and a cap therefor, one of the said members having a circumferentially mortised portion adjacent one end thereof and the other member having a continuously tenoned portion adapted to snap into engagement with the said circumferentially mortised portion to normally maintain the body memer and cap in associated relationship and Copies of this patent may be obtained for also to readily snap out of engagement With the said circumferentially mortised portion to separate the cap from the said body member.
2. A receptacle comprising a cylindrical body open at one end and closed at the other With a circumferentially mortised portion in the outer face thereof adjacent the open end, and a cap having a continuously tenoned flange adapted to fit and snap over the open end of the cylindrical body in any position so that the continuously tenoned flange engages the circumferentially mortised portion to normally maintain the parts in their associated relationship. 3. A receptacle comprising a cylindrical body closed at oneend and open at the other, With a portion of reduced cross section at the open end, the outer faceof the said portion of reduced cross section being mortised or recessed for a part of its longitudinal length, While the remaining part thereof is parallel to the outer alls of the body menu'- ber, and a cap having a tenoned flange adapted to fit the mortised portion of the end of reduced cross section of the body member to maintain the cap in position thereon.
