edges of wounds and sewing the same, with a View to affording eflicacious emergency treatment and lessening the liability of recurring hemorrhages; the appliances being so constructed and arranged that they may be used to advantage by a person of little learning or one having small experience.
The invention in all of its detailswill be. fully understood from the following description and claims, when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specificatlon, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective of the needle comprised in my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the needle.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevation of the heel end of the needle.
Fig. 5 is a cross section through the shank of the needle.
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are views illustrative of the use of the needle referred to in conjunction with an auxiliary appliance.
Referring by numeral to the said drawings, and more particularly to F1gs. 1 to 5 thereof:
1 is the shank of my novel needle. The said shank 1 is provided in its convex edge with a longitudinal channel 2, and its forward end is beveled as indicated by 3 is provided with a notch 4, designed to receive and hold the thread employed. In cross section the shank 1 is of narrow V-shape, as shown in Fig. 5; and it will also be noted that the said shank is solid. The shank may be made of any metal or alloy compatible with its purpose without afi'ecting my invention, though I prefer to make it of alloy comprising of gold and 30% of alummum.
At the rear end of the shank 1 and carried thereon is a head 5, provided in order to enable an operator to conveniently exert ressure against the heel end of the. needle. gaid head 5 is provided at 6 with a kerf that is coincident with the channel 2 and merges at its inner contracted end into an aperture 7 in the center of the head.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 6 to 8 is comprised a head 5 similar in general configuration to the head 5 of Figs. 1 to 4. The said head 5 is provided with a kerf 6 and a central aperture 7 and is also provided in its outer side with a groove 10, designed to receive the cross-head 11 on laterals 12, which are notched as shown and are joined at their rear ends through the medium of a handle 13. It will be noticed here that the forward ends of the laterals 12 are disposed in the recesses 14 of the head 5; also that the head 5 of the needle is disposed in the notches of the notched laterals 12, and that the needle is projected through the central aperture in the head 5*.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that the appliances enable the surgeon to work with both hands and to conveniently knot the thread as occasion demands.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A surgical needle comprising a shank curved in the direction of its length, and having a longitudinal groove in its convex edge and also having a notch at its forward end, and ahead at the heel end of the shank and carried thereon.
2. A surgical needle comprising a shank curved in the direction of its length and having a longitudinal channel in its convex edge, and a head carried on the heel end of the shank and having a kerf coincident with said channel and also having opposite recesses in its edge.
3. In means for the purpose described, a head having opposite recesses in its edge and also having a groove in its forward side between raid recesses, a cross-head seated in an appliance having an apertured head resaid groove and secured by solder or other ceiving the shank of the needle and also means to the head, laterals, of notched type, having notched laterals seating the head of 10 reaching from the ends of the cross-head, the needle.
