CLOSURE FOR TOY BANKS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 25, 1919.
Application filed June 25, 1919. Serial No. 306,659.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. BIxoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Closures for Toy Banks and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to closures for toy banks, but the improvement is also applicable to other receptacles.
Its object is the pro-vision of a simple and inexpensive device of this character which, while permitting convenient deposit of coins in the receptacle, prevents their withdrawal without destroying the bank or breaking the closure.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy bank embodying thei'nvention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof with the lid open and the baflle closed. Fig. 3 is a similar section with the lid closed and battle open to release a deposited coin. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line il- 1, Fig. 3, looking upward. Fig. 5 is a similar section on line 55, Fig. 2, looking downward. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary horizontal section on line 66 Fig. 2, looking upward.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
10 indicates the body of the toy bank or other receptacle, which may be of rectangular or other appropriate form and suitably ornamented. It is preferably constructed of paper board, but any other de sired material may be used.
In one of its walls, preferably its to 11, the bank is provided with a coin-receiving aperture 12. Applied to the underside of the top and surrounding said aperture is a frame 13 of tin or other suitable material forminga coin pocket or chamber which is open at its upper and lower ends. In the construction shown, the aperture 12 and said frame are of rectangular form, and the frame is provided at its sides and its front end with to flanges 14 hearing against the underside o the top and each having one or more integral tongues 15 which penetrate the top and are bent down upon it, whereby the frame is securely fastened in place.
The coin aperture is closed by a verticallyswinging lid 16, hinged at or near the upper rear end of said frame. The lid preferably has cars 17 carrying integral pintles 17*- fitted in bearing-openings 17 in the side walls of said frame, and at its free end it has a thumb-piece 18 for conveniently opening it. As shown in Fig. 6, the rear wall of the frame is provided in its upper edge adjacent to its side walls with notches 0r recesses 17 which receive said ears in the open position of the lid. If desired, the rear wall of the frame may be doubled on itself, as shown, to reinforce it. The lid extends rearwardly beyond its hinge and the rear end of the frame 13 to form a tail-piece 19 which lies adjacent to the underside of the top 11 when the lid is closed.
Applied to the bottom or inner end of the frame or coin pocket 13 is a gate or baffle 20 controlled by the lid 16 and operating to close the coin pocket when the lid is opened, as shown in Fig. 2, and to open and discharge a deposited coin into the bank when the lid is closed. In the referred construction shown, the baffle is hinged by integral pintles 21 fitted in openings in the side walls of the frame 13, the same as the lid the free end of the baffle resting normally against the lower front edge of the frame. In the rear side of its hinge, the baffle is provided with an inclined or downward-extension terminating in a tailpiece 23 which is arranged to be tipped and depressed by the tail-piece 19 of the lid 16 when the latter is opened, so as to elevate and close the baflle, as shown in Fig. 2. When thus opened, the lid occu ies a substantially upright position in which it holds the b ame closed, and prevents the withdrawal of coins previously deposited in the bank,
Upon depositing a coin in the pocket 12 and closing the lid, the bafile is released and drops by gravity to the open position shown in Fig. 3, delivering the coin into the bank. The downwardly-bent extension 23 permits the balile to swing into this open position.
To simplify the construction and reduce the cost of the closure, its parts may be stamped of tin or other sheet metal. To permit of the ready assemblage of the frame 13, and the lid and the baflie with their in tegral pintles 17 and 21, the frame, in its preferred form, is bent from a single strip aving its ends secured together by a suitable joint, such as a tongue 24 at one end of the strip interlocked with a slot 25 in the adjoining end, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5. I
I claim as my invention: 1
1. A closure for a toy bank or the like, comprising a frame adapted to surround the coin-aperture of the bank, a swinging baffle applied to the inner end of saidframe and having a tail-piece, and a swinging lid applied to the outer end of said frame and having a tail-piece arranged to engage the tail-piece of the bafiie to close the latter when the lid is opened.
2. A closure for a toy bank or the like, comprising a frame adapted to surround the coin-aperture of the bank, a bafile hinged to the lower end of said frame and provided in rear of its hinge with a downward extension terminating in a tail-piece, and a lid hinged to the upper end of said frame and having a tail-piece arranged to engage the tail-piece of the baffle when the lid is opened.
3. A closure for a to bank or the like. comprising a frame acapted to surround the coin-aperture of lhe hank, swinging baflie applied to the inner end of said frame and having a tail-piece extending beyond the rear end of said frame, and a swinging lid hinged adjacent to the rear end of said frame and having a tail-piece extending beyond said rear end and arranged to trip the tail-piece of the baffle to close the latter when the lid is opened.
4. A closure for a toy bank or the like, comprising a fran'ie adapted to surround the coin-aperture of the bank, said frame being provided in the upper edge of its rear wall with notrhos a swinging lid having side ears arranged to enter said notches and terminating in hinge-pintles journaled in the side Walls of said frame, the lid also having a tail-piece extending beyond said notched Wall, and a swinging baflie applied to the inner end of said frame and having a tail-piece located in the path of movement of the lid tail-piece.
5. A closure for a toy bank or'the like, comprising a rectangular frame adapted to surround the coinaperture of the bank, said frame consisting of a continuous strip secured together at its ends and having two sets of pintle-openings located near its upper and lower edges, respectively, a swinging lid having pintles journaled in the upper set of said openings and a tail-piece extending beyond the rear end of said frame. and a swinging bafiie havin pintles journaled in the lower set of sai openings and having a tail-piece arranged underneath the tail-piece of the lid to be engaged thereby.
