Be it known that I, FRIDoLrN SCHIMMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Faribault, in the county of Rice and State or' Minnesota, have invented certain new Y and useful Improvements in Book-Racks;

and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its obj ect to provide a simple and efiicient Vbook rack of a character adapted to be set on a table or on a shelf to hold a comparatively small number of books; and to such ends, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter and described and defined in the claims.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views. Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved rack showing several books held thereby, some parts of the base of the rack being broken away;

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rack;

Fig. 3 is an enlarged view chieiy in section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, but with some parts shown in full, and some parts broken away;

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section on the line M of Fig. 3; and

Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2, some parts being removed.

The baseot` the rack is formed from a flat board 6, preferably of more or less ornamental design. This board,in its underside, is formed with longitudinally extended centrally located grooves 7 that have relatively narrow slots 8 cut completely through the board or base 6.

Mounted to slide ontop of the base board 6 are two book clamping heads made up, preferably of parallel upright wooden plates 9 and brackets 10 rigidly secured thereto. The under edges of the plates 9 and brackets 10 are preferably faced with felt or other pliable strips 11 that directly engage the upper surface of the base board 6 and prevent the same from being marred or scratched.

Each clamping head is provided with a substantially flat spring metal clamping strip 12 attached thereto by screws 13 and 14. The screwsl and 1a are screwed, respectively, into the plates 9 and their brackets 10 and extend through and slide in the respective slots S with the clamping strips 12 working in the corresponding grooves T. The clamping strips 12 are slightly narrower than the grooves 7, but considerably wider than the slots 8, so that they will clamp against the undersur'faces of the flanges formed in the base board 6 by the grooves T and slots 8. Screws 13 are adjusted so that there is but slight clearance between the inner ends of the clamping strips 12 and the said flanges, but the screws 111 are adjusted so that there is very considerable clearance between the outer ends of said clamping strips and the said flanges. Those portions of the spring clamping strips 12 that are closely adjacent to screws 13, yieldingly press against the flanges noted on the base 6 and tend to hold the head plates 9 in vertical positions, or at right angles to the base 6. These clamping strips 12 will yield readily to permit the heads to be moved, the one toward the other and against the books y, but pressure applied to the' heads by the books clamped between the heads, will be in an outward direction, and, as the inner edge of the clamping strips 12 are unyieldingly held by the screws 18, and as the brackets 10 prevent the head plates 9 from being rocked outward, there will be a clamping or biting action sufficient to prevent accidental outward sliding movement of the clamping heads. To release the clamping heads from the books and to slide the same outward, it is necessary to first press the upper edges of the heads against the books more tightly, so as to tilt the heads and slightly raise the brackets 10, whereupon the said clamping heads may be slid outward or away from the books.

This improved book rack has, in practice, been found highly efiicient for the purposes had in view, and moreover, may be manu- Jactured at small cost. Obviously, it may be made in any desired ornamental design.

By reference, particularly to Fig. 3, it will be noted, that the clamping strips and the heads of the screws are always within the grooves 7 and above the undersurface of the base board 6, so.. that they cannot mar or scratch a table or sheltl on which the rack is set. Also7 it is evident that as the two clamping heads are adjustable, it is always possible to clamp a set orn books, or several books between the heads with the books at the central portion of the rack, and this, as is evident, gives the best appearance.y

That I Claim is:

l. A book rack comprising a base board formed in its under side with a groove and with a relatively narrow slot opening from said groove to the top oi the boarch clamping heads applied on said'1 board, at least one thereof being adjustable toward and from the other, curved spring metal clamping strips working in said groove and being wider than said slot, and screws connecting the ends 4of said clamping strips to said clamping head, through said slot, the inner screw being adjusted to Closely clamp the inner end of said Clamping strip against the flanges formed by said groove and slot, and the outer screw being` adjusted to afford large clearance 4between the outer ends of said clamping strip and said anges.

2. book rack Comprising a base board formed with alined longitudinal grooves, and relatively narrow slots opening from said grooves through the top of said board, a pair of clamping heads slidably mounted on sa-id board, curved spring clamping strips working in said grooves and being` wider than said slots7 and screws connecting the ends of said clamping strips through said slots, and to the respective clamping heads, the inner screws being adjusted to cause said clamping strips to engage the flanges ol' Asaid base board adjacent to the inner screws leaving large clearance between said lianges and the outer ends of said clamping strips.
