Beit known that 1, JOHN F. RYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Indexes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to indexes for telephone and other directories and other bound books, and its object is to provide such with a detachable index which can be readily applied to the same and detachably held in proper position between the leaves of the book, so that when anew edition of the book issues, the index can be removed and at tachedtto the same; 7

Referring specifieallyto the drawings, the index is made up of a plurality of sheets 10. each of which is provided with the usual index tab 10 projecting from its forward edge. These sheets are slightly smaller than the pages of the book with which they are to be associated, and their back edges are reinforced by a sheet metal strip 11 bent around to tightly grip the same. The sheets are all strung in a longitudinal series and in spaced relation on a wire or other flexible member 12 which runs in between the two sides of the reinforcing strips 11 to one of a pair of holes 13, and it is brought back and forth between the holes once or twice to prevent the sheets from slipping along the wire, and then run out between the sides of the strips to the op posite ends thereof. The tie device for the wire 12 is a sheet metal strip let a little shorter than the book for which the index is designed so as not to interfere with any cloth bound detachable plate, and-the latter provides a lock or closure for the notches 15 to prevent the wire 12 seating thereon as will be presently described, from slipping out. Between the channels 18, the plate 17 is bowed outward so that it may slide freely overthewire 12.

Top and bottom cover leaves 19 and 20, respectively, are carried by the plate 17, said leaves covering the top and bottomof'the having a backing piece 20 for the plate 17. The book to which the index isapplied is shown at 21, and the former is assembled therewith by placing thesheets 10 between the leaves of the book at the proper places. The sheets are then fastened in place in the following. manner. 1

The end of the wire at the top of the first sheet 12, is made fast to the corresponding end of the strip. 14 by being tied to the neck portion thereof. The wire between the second and third sheets is attached to the top neck portion of the strip in the same manner that the wire between the first and second sheets was connected to a v in place and the end of the wire is fastened Q to the neck closest to it. The backing plate 1.7 is now slid over the strip 14 which completes the operation, the book being now inclosed between the cover leaves or plates 19 and 20. The tabs 1O may be printed on' both sides to facilitate reading thereof whether the book is opened from the back or the front.

I claim:

1.. An index for, books, comprising a plurality of index sheets, a flexible member connecting the sheets in a longitudinal series and in. spaced relation, the sheets being insertible between the leaves of the book, and an anchoring strip extending along the back of the book when the sheets are inserted between the leaves thereof, and having means for holding the free portions of the aforesaid member extending between the sheets.

An index for books, comprising a plurality of index sheets, a flexible'member connecting the sheets in a longitudinal series and in spaced relation, the sheets being insertible between the leaves of the book, and an anchoring strip extending along the back of the book when the sheets are inserted between the leaves thereof, and having means for holding the free portions of the aforesaid member extending between the sheets, the successive ones of said free portions being attached alternately to opposite ends of the strip.

An index for books, comprising a plurality of index sheets, a flexible member connecting the sheets in a longitudinal series and in spaced relation, the sheets being insertible between the leaves of the book, and an anchoring strip extending along the back of the book when the sheets are inserted between the leaves thereof, and having notched end portions around which the free portions of the aforesaid member extending between the sheets are looped.

An index for books, comprising a plurality of index sheets, a flexible member connecting the sheets in a longitudinalseries and in spaced relation, the sheets being insertible between the leaves of the book, and an anchoring strip extending along the back of the book when the sheets are inserted between the leaves thereof, and having notched end portions around which the free portions of the aforesaid member extending between the sheets are looped, the sucessive ones of said free portions being attached alternately to opposite ends of the strip. 5 i

An index for books, comprising a plurality of index sheets, a flexible member connecting the sheets in a longitudinal series and in spaced relation, the sheets being insertible between the leaves of the book, an anchoring strip extending along the back of the book when the sheets are inserted between the leaves thereof, and having means for holding the free portions of the aforesaid member extending between the sheets, and a detachable backing plate for the anchoring strip, said plate having channels in which the strip seats.

An index for books, comprising a plurality of index sheets, a flexible member connecting the sheets in a longitudinal series and in spaced relation, the sheets being insertible between the leaves of the book, an anchoring strip extending along the back of the book when the sheets are inserted between the leaves thereof, and having means for holding thepfree portions of the aforesaid member extending between the sheets, and a backing plate detachably connected to the anchoring strip and having top and bottom cover leaves inclosing the book.

7. An index for books, comprising a plurality of index sheets, a reinforcement along the back edges of the sheets, a flexible member connecting the sheets .in a longitudinal series and in spaced relation, said member being attached to the aforesaid reinforcement, the sheets being insertible between the leaves of the book, and an anchoring strip extending along the back of the book when'the sheets are inserted between the leaves thereof, and having means for holding the free portions of the aforesaid member extending between the sheets.
