g I UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

IVILLIAM F. WEST, OF HAVERSTBAW, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM CALL, JR, OF SAME PLACE.

IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-RESTS FOR BOOKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,116, dated December 17, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM I WVEST, of Ilaverstraw, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HandRests for Books and I do hereby declare that the following is-afulf-elefar, andl iegactrdescription thereof, that'will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in covering that portion upon which the arm is supported with silicate of slate or some equivalent substance upon which pencils will freely mark, for the convenience of book-keepers, as will hereafter be'more fully set forth.

The accompanying drawing represents a perspective of my invention.

- A B represent an ordinary book-rest, used by all book-keepers and others. The raised portion B of this rest is covered with silicate of slatev or any equivalent substance upon which pencils will freely mark,.so that book-keepers, and others who have to add up long columns of figures which extend over many pages can readily putdo-wn the result of each addition as it is made without marring their book or having to constantly keep slips of paper for that purpose. The slips of paper are not only liable to get misplaced and lost, but the marks made upon them are not readily erased when error is made nor so conveniently used.

The silica or slaty substance is always at the foot of the page, in the most convenient position for use, and as the pencil-marks can be always erased in an instant, this improve- I ment willbe found to be of great assistance
