CARL AXEL ARVID WESTERBERG, OF STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN.
Application filed September 9, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CARL AXEL Anvil) WESTERBERG, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at 10 Kungstradgardsgatan, Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Firing with Pulverized or Breeze-Formed Fuels, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in apparatus for firing with pulverized or. breeze-formed fuels, such as coalor coke-breeze, or powder, saw-dust, peat-powder, etc.
In the present apparatus, the breeze or pulverulent fuel is introduced into and burnt in a fire-place together with a gaseous fuel, the solid fuel being blown into the flame produced by the gaseous fuel.
By means of the present invention, an effective and complete combustion can be effected in those cases where the solid fuel can not maintain its own combustion, which, for instance, occurs with charcoal-breeze.
An embodiment of the invention is shown on the annexed drawing. a indicates a receptacle for the breeze or pulverulent fuel which receptacle is tapered downwardly like a funnel. In the lower part of this receptacle the feed-wheel b is arranged, driven by an electric motor 0. In the lower part of the receptacle ,a situated under the feedwheel I) an inlet-pipe 0 for the combustion air is arranged which pipe is arranged and operates as a blast-pipe. This pipe 0 is provided with a spy-window (Z of glass, for observing that the pipe does not become filled with breeze or powder. The fore open end of the said pipe is provided with a recess e which however may also be replaced by an inclined chamfer, so that the pipe in any case opens upward or is inclined upward. In front of the pipe is arranged a mixing-pipe f, in which an intimate mixture of combustion air and solid fuel is effected. From this pipe f the solid fuel together with the combustion air leaves the feeding-device and enters the combustionchamber which in the embodiment shown consists of the fireplace of a steam boiler g.
The mixing-pipe fis arranged in a chamber it, connected to the gas-pipe z. Through this gas-pipe the gaseous fuel is introduced. The same is introduced with the mixture of combustion air and solid fuel by means of the action in the pipe 7.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 29, 1920 Serial No. 253,266.
'70 indicates a pipe which opens in the neighborhood of the feed-wheel b. Through this pipe steam or air at a comparatively high pressure .is introduced in such cases, when the solid fuel for some reason or other becomes clogged in the lower part of the funnel, and can not fall down into the feedwheel. Through the opening of the cock Z air or steam can be introduced when the bridge or vault formed by the solid fuel will be loosened or broken down, so that the feed may be continued.
A complete control of the supply of gas and air as well as of breeze can be obtained by means of suitable gas-dampers, the air regulating valve on and the feed-wheel I) respectively.
The device above described is preferably suitable for the employment of charcoalbreeze as the solid and blast-furnace-gas as the gaseous fuel. As in smelting-house plants these two fuels are accessible, the steam boilers for instance may be advantageously heated according to the process, above described in utilizing the device above mentioned.
Claims.
1. The combination, with a furnace of a tapering receptacle for solid fuel, a chamber adjacent the lower part of said receptacle, a mixing pipe within said chamber, a feed wheel in proximity to said mixing pipe for forwarding solid fuel thereto from said receptacle, a blast pipe having an upwardlyopening slot under the feed whee], means for supplying air under pressure to said blast pipe to force the solid fuel into and through the mixing pipe, a gas supply pipe connected to said chamber, a source of gas having access to said pipe, this latter fuel being drawn into the combustion chamber by the entraining action of the air blast, and means for controlling the supply of solid and gaseous fuels and air to the furnace.
2. The combination, with a furnace of. a tapering receptacle for solid fuel, a chamber adjacent the lower part of said receptacle, a mixing pipe within said chamber, a feed wheel in proximity to said mixing pipe for forwarding solid fuel thereto from said receptacle, a blast pipe having an upwardly opening slot under the feed wheel, means for supplying air under pressure to said blast pipe to force the solid fuel into and through the mixing pipe, a gas supply pipe connected to said chamber, a source of gas having access to said pipe. this latter fuel being drawn into the combustion chamber by the entraining action of the air blast, means for introducing compressed air or steam into the receptacle when the solid fuel becomes clogged therein, and means for controlling the supply of solid and gaseous fuels and air to the furnace.
3. The combination, with a furnace of a receptacle for solid fuel tapering; downwardl like a funnel, a feed wheel in the lower part of the receptacle, means for driving the feed wheel, an inlet pipe for combustion air situated in the lower part of the receptacle under the feed wheel, a spy-window in said pipe, an 11pwarcllyope11ing outlet in the opposite end of said pipe, a mixing pipe in front of said air pipe, to which fuel is fed from said receptacle by said feed wheel, a chamber about said mixing pipe, a gas pipe connected to said chamber. a steam or high pressure air pipe arranged above. the feed wheel and means for regulating the supply of solid and gaseous fuels, combustion air and steam or high pressure air to the apparatus.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
CARL AXEL ARVID WESTERBERG.
