IMPROVEMENT IN PADS FOR HARNESS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,155, dated February 25, 1873.

` To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, J oHN D. GROTE and KENNARD H. WILSON, of Oxford, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented certain Improvements in a Pneumatic Pad for Saddles, Harness, Sto., of which the following is a specification:

The object of our invention is to produce a cooling, anti-friction, and elastic soft-pad, for

the double purpose of reducing the temperature and absorbing moisture, the more effectually to prevent the gallingyor excoriation of horses, by means of anelastic air-chamber, in combination with a pocket or cushion stuffed with chamois leather.

Figure 1 illustrates the combined or double pad. Fig. 2 shows a sectional view of the airchamber and stuffed pocket.

This pad can be wholly or partially molded out of rubber or gum elastic, or the air-chainbers only, andthe gum or gum-cloth O to form the pocket, may be attached to the in ner side of the air-chamber A by sewing or otherwise. Two such chambers maybe united in the molding by a broad band, B, or separately connected.` A soft flapJ), can be applied to cover the open mouth of the pocket, if desirable. These severalfparts, jointly, can be so shaped as to adapt the pad to the special purpose it is designed to supply the want of. The air-chamber A being inflated with air, similar to a common rubberball, has a few holes to that end, the elastic exterior walls being suiciently stout to resume their form when the pressure is removed, thus drawing in or expelling the air by the muscular action of the animal when in motion. To the inner side of these air-chambers A we attach a perforated gum or guru- `cloth lining, C, open only at the upper end,

forming a pocket. This pocket we stuff loosely and evenly with chamois leather D. This proves to be softer, more elastic than any other known material, and equal as an absorbent, and better adapted to meet all the objects in viewwhether that of preventing galling or for being medicated to heal, when already galled. It is also readily washed, dried, and replaced without impairing its original eilicaoy.

The combined operation of this pad will readily suggest itself. The pneuinaticaction will greatly tend to reduce the temperature and aid the absorbing qualities ofthe stuing, as already sufficiently stated.

We are aware that solid gum pads are used, as also pads stuffed with sponge, with the same object in view. We disclaim the use of solid ygum or sponge stuffing.
