UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR M. MAY, OF FOND, DU LAO, WISCONSIN.
p IMPROVEMENTINSIGNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,744, dated March 11, 1:173.
1' 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR M. MAY, of Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Show-Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the con-- struction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation Fig. 2 is a top view of the same with chimney-cover removed.
My invention relates to an improvement in show-lanterns, for advertising or other purposes; and it consists in a revolving hollow cylinder suspended inside of a lantern, above the lamp, the upper end of the cylinder being closed by a current-wheel, which is acted upon by the current arising from the flame, and the cylinder thus caused to revolve horizontally about its axis.
In the drawing, A represents a lantern of any suitable construction, having its sides composed of glass, which may be either clear or ground, or slightly colored on the inner side. B is the lamp, outside of which is a wire frame work, 0, which terminates in a point, 0, near the top of the lantern. D is' the revolving hollow cylinder, consisting of a light frame-work of metal covered with paper or other suitable transparent or semi-transparent material, on which is represented any suitable design or advertisement or other fignre which it may be desired to exhibit. The upper end of the cylinder is closed by a currentwheel, E, from the center of which projects downward a hollow cone, 6, which is placed over the point 0, so that the cylinder revolves about its vertical axis when the current from the flame of the lamp impinges against the sails or leaves of the wheel E.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Ina show-lantern a hollow revolving cylinder suspended inside the lantern and caused to revolve by the current from the lamp, substant-ially as shown and described...
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
EDGAR MASON MAY.
Witnesses I AUGUST GARSTENS, T. S. HENRY.
