Application led March 18, 1916. Serial No. 85,025.
- siding at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to abdominal supports and refers more particularly to an improved construction adapted for use either in connection with a corset, or as a separate belt or support, or as` an article of manufacture to be sold as an attachment for corsets.
Among the objects of the invention are to provide a construction of abdominal support which is both detachable and adjustable in such manner as to permit the wearer to conveniently put on and take oiJ the same, and to readily adjust the pressure exerted by the support; to provide a constructionv of adjustment by which either light or strong pressure can be applied at any predetermined part oi the support; to provide an improved construction in which the lacing or lacings are so arranged and proportioned that when a given pull is eX- ertedon the tightening strap it will produce agreatly increased pull on the front section, g1ving an eect similar to that produced by a block and tackle arrangement; to provide an `abdominal support which is adapted in many instances to replace trusses or the like; to provide a construction which will properly support and reinforce the weak-v ened abdominal walls without interfering with the normal movements of the body; and in general to provide a new'and improved construction of the character referred to. The invention further resides in various features oit' construction and in such, details of arrangement and combination of parts as will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view showing an abdominal support embodying my invention attached. to a corset;
Fig. 2 is a view showing the invention as applied to a support or belt;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective View showing one form of adjustable lacing; and
Fig. 4e is a view showing the tabs arranged as a separate article of manufacture.
Describing in detail the particular construction of my invention shown in the drawings, and referring irst to the construction shown in Fig. 2, A designates the back or main sectionof the support, and B and C the side or front sections, hereinafter referred to as the tab sections. These tab sections are secured to the main section by a lacing arrangement, the particular construction of which is more clearly shown in Fig. 3 and is as follows: One end D of the lace E is secured to a strap section F, the Jfree end of the strap section being secured by a A buckle or similar device, and the lace then extends through an aperture G in the main section and through an aperture H in the tab section. After passing through the aperture H the lace is returned to the main section and passes through a second, series or row of apertures I. The manner of lacing is such that the transversely-extending portions J do not move when the strap F is pulled to draw the sections A and C toward each other. As the lacings are return-bent to extend a plurality of times across the space'between the edgesv ofthe sections, the movement of the strap member one inch will produce a lesser. movement of the tab section toward the main section, thus giving an effect similar to that produced by a-block and tackle arrangement, and allowing a relatively great tension to be applied without the necessity of 'exerting any extremely strong pull upon the strap member. While I have shown and vdescribed a single facing as being so arranged as to produce this ef fect, the invention in certain of its aspects is not limited to the use of a single lace.
In the construction shown in Fig. a; the tab sections B', instead oit being secured to a main section, are secured to relatively narrow strips J', which are adapted to be sold as an article of manufacture to be attached to corsets of variouszmakes, by sewing or otherwise attaching the strips J to the body of the corset.
In the contsruction shown in Fig. 1, it will be noticed that the clasps or buttons K which secure together the forward edges L and L of the tab sections, are located so as to come at the front of the body and correspond in position substantially with the se curing members .Ii/i'. and M of the'corset. Also the strap members N and Ni are arranged to buckle or be' otherwise secured at the front. This arrangement allows the combined corset and abdominal support to be conveniently applied, and avoids the necessity of the wearer stepping into either the corset or the abdominal support or pulling the support over the head.
Where only a slight pressure is desired the strap member F maybe formed of elastic material or a portion of the sections J may be so formed. While this arrangement would be satisfactory where the support was used in cases of obesity, it is not advisable if'the support is to be used in cases of hernia or the like where the safety of the person wearing the support i`s directly dependent on the support staying in position. In `such cases the strap is perfectly non-elastic and is buckled or otherwise secured at the lower abdomen.
art ofthe support, as shown in Fig. 4. buch arrangement not only generally insures the support remaining in position but also produces a lifting effect which greatly relieves the strain upon the walls of the A hook or other suitable securing device R fastened to one of the sections may also be employed for holding the support in proper position, particularly where vthe support is worn by thin people; this catch being looped around one or more strands of the lacing or otherwise secured to hold the support and the strap in proper position.
Various other changes in the detailsof constructions can be made within the scope of my invention, and I therefore do not desire to limit the invention except as specified in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is l. A support, comprising a main section and a tabsect-ion, one of which has one row of eyelets and the other of which has two rows of eyelets, adjustable connections between said sections comprising a lacing adapted to be looped through one row of eyelets on one of said sections and through two rows of eyelets on the other of said sections, and a fastening member `positioned outside of said sections and secured to said lacing, said fastening member extending toward the front of the support and adapted when drawn forward to pull the tab section rearwardly toward the main section so as to exert pressure at predetermined portions of the support. j
2. A support, comprising two adjoining sections respectively provided with eyelets, a lacing engaging said eyelets to adjustably connect said sections, and a tensioning member for said lacing secured to one of said sections and adjustable thereupon to vary the tension, said lacing comprising a continuous member having an engagement with certain of the eyelets of one of the sections restraining it against free movement and vplurality of portions, restrained against ad.
justment relative to one of said sections and alternating portions extending back and -forth between the two sections andfreely adjustable relative` thereto, said alternating portions being further extended tothe te nsioning member and attached to the same.
4. A support, comprising two adjoining sections, a lacing connected to said sections and a tensioning member for said lacing secured to one of said sections and adjustable thereupon to vary the,tension, said lacing having a plurality of extensions to said tensioning member, a plurality of portions having an engagement with one of said sections restraining them. against adjustment relative thereto and portions adjoining said extensions extending back and forth between thesections and freely adjustable relative thereto, and means carried by the section engaged by the tensioning member restraining one of said extensions against deflection.v
5. A support comprising two adjacent sections respectively provided with eyelets, a lacing engaging said eyelets to adjustably connect said sections, said lacing having a loop therein extending from the eyelets of one section, and a member to which said loopy is freely movably connected, adjustably engaging the other of said sections to place a tension on said lacing.
6. A support comprising two adjacent sections respectively provided with eyelets, a lacing engaging the eyelets to adjustably connect said sections, said lacing having a loop therein extending from the eyelets of one section, and a member adjustably engaging the other of said sections having an eyelet through which said loop freely mov- SAMUEL H1 CAMP.
