Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
STEPHEN A. SHEPARD, OF PITTSBUBQ'PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT INAPPARATUS FOR PAINTING 0R COATING BROOM-HANDLES. MOLDINGS, to.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,767, dated May 13, 1873 application filed April 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, STEPHEN A. SHEPARD, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Painting or Coating Articles or Things, viz., Broom Handles, Mouldings, 860.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in an elastic wiper, sheet of India rubber, or other elastic material furnished with an opening, and secured upon a suitable frame and suspendedover a vessel containing paint, varnish, oil, or matter used for coating articles, so that by passing the article or thing to be coated down through the opening of the clastic sheet into the paint, varnish, &c., and then drawing it back through said opening, its walls will so impinge upon the article or thing as to remove or wipe 0d the surplus paint, &c., leaving upon the article or thing the desired coating.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing which forms part of my specification, Figure 1 is a top view or plan of my improvement in apparatus for painting or coating articles or things. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same at line y of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view or plan of the apparatus constructed so that it may be expanded. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represents sheets of India rubber, each having openings of different forms, said sheets being used for articles the form of which (when viewed in cross-section) correspond to the openings in the sheets.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the wiper which is secured to the frame B which is placed over the vessel 0, which is filled with paint, varnish, oil, or other material for painting or coating the article or thing to be painted or coated, which is passed down through the opening D in the sheet Ainto the paint in the vessel 0; it is then drawn back and the walls of the opening will so impinge upon the article being withdrawn that the sur plus paint will be wiped ofi it, and the surplus drop back into the vessel 0, leaving the desired quantity of the coating material upon the I article withdrawn.
The quantity or thickness of the coat of paint or other material upon the articleimmersed in the manner hereinbefore described will depend upon the difference between thediameter of the opening D in the sheet A and the diameter of the article to be coated, and also upon B and sheet A, as shown in Fig. 3, will be readily understood without further description.
The opening D in sheet A should correspond nearly as possible to the form of the article (when viewed in cross-section) which is to pass down and drawn back through the opening D.
By means of the apparatus hereinbefore described, broom-handles, moldings, and a great variety of other articles and things can be painted or coated with great facility, and with great economy of the material used for paintin g or coating, and work done in a better manner than can be accomplished with the ordinary paint-brush.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is- The wiping or coating apparatus hereinbefore described, viz., the elastic sheet A, provided with opening D and secured to theframe B, in combination with a vessel containing the painting or coating material, as and for the purpose specified. v
STEPHEN A. SHEPARD.
