DIAL-LOCK.
Application-filed april 5,
To all whom t may concern: i
Be it known that I, RoLLiN C, LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, and'a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield `and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dial- Locks and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, Vand eXact description of the' invention, such [as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. n
This invention relates to an improvement in dial locks. v Locks of this type are sometimes' attacked by-first removing the dial and driving the spindle back into the lock case. `The inner end of the spindle contacting kwithv thecurb, or the driving cam on the spindle contacting with the Vfirst tumbler of the series, which tumblers are carried by the curb, dislodges the curb and its associateddtumblers and also the driving-cam on the spindle thus removing the bolt locking means and permitting the bolt to be retracted vfrom the outside.V n p l The object of this invention is to provide means for normally deadlocking the bolt, and a safety device which moves into position upon the displacement of the driving cam, for holding the deadlocking means in its deadlocking position and thus prevent the retraction of the bolt.V
With this object in view my invention conn l Y i and adapted to be forced out by a spring 22 sists in the parts and combination of parts as will be more fully explained `and pointed4 out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 perspective of the dial, lock case, spindle, driving cam on the spindle and the combined fence and deadlocking lever; Fig. 2 is a view of the curb and the well known manner.
disk tumblers carried thereby; Fig. 3 is a view in section of Fig. 4 and Fig. 4 is an end view of the lock case, the curb, tumblers, driving cam and spindle beingl removed.
10 represents the dial and 11r the spindle which connects the dial with the driving cam 12 which as shown in Fig. 1 is keyed to the spindle 11 and turns therewith. Thisdriving cam 12 is located within thelock ase 13, and actuates the tumblers 14 in the AThese tumblers are assembled and secured on a sleeve 15 intef gral with the curb 16, and the latter is secured to the open end of the lock case with Specification of Letters Patent.
` up and in position to r thus yreleasing the bolt ratentearaov. i, i921. 1921. Serial No. 458,690.
the first tumbler thereon in position to be engaged and actuated by the driving cam.
As the lock case 13 is secured to theinner face of the door, and the tumblers assembled on and secured to the curb which is secured to the lock case, it follows that if the curb be forcibly detached fromV the lock case, by driving the spindleV inwardly, thetumblers will also be dislodged and fall out with the curb. y
The tumblers and driving cam are veach provided with a slot or gating 19, and the fence 17 which is integral' with the dog or dead locking lever 18 normally rests against the peripheries of the tumblers and .driving cam and holds ythe freeend of the dog 18 dog or deadlock the bolt. Vhen the tumblers are turned by the dial spindle and driving cam to bring the gatings into alinement, the fence enters the latter thus permitting the free end of they lock case vat 20,'
the bolt and permitpthe action in the event the tumblers and driving .cam are-displaced, `andprevent the dog orv i dead locking lever 18 from dropping and and it consists of a plate 21lof a size and the lock case in frontk ofthe driving cam,
of the fence 17 the displacement ofthe and obstruct the movementV in the event of driving cam.
This plate is provided at its upper end with a projection 23 which rests in a slot in the lock case and prevents displacement of the plate, and is also provided centrally with an opening 24 for the passageof the spindle 11. The spring 22 rests Vbetween the front face of the lock case and the plate 21 and tends to force the lower end of latter outwardly as shown in Fig. 8, but is normally held in the position shown in dotted lines by the driving cam 12 which when in normal position holds the plate against the front face of the lock case. If however the driving cam be forced rearwardly or inwardly by force applied to the spindle, the plate 21 will. be forced inwardly by its spring 22 as the cam 12 is moved rearwardly, and engages the fence and prevents the latshape to fit within tion over the fence and absolutely prevent the latter from rising as it must do to re`` lease the bolt.
In the ordinary operation of the lock, the plate 21 is held out of the path of the tence and it is only when the driving cam has been displaced that this plate moves to a vposition to engage and obstruct the movement of the fence and conseounantlyy the dogging lever 18 integral with the fence.
" It is evident that numerouschanges in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention hence I would have itunderstood that I do not confine myself to details eX- cept such as may be referredV to in the claims.
I-Iaving fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
V1. InV a lock, the combination of a spindle, a tumbler actuated by the same, a fence cooperating with the tumbler t0 dog and tov release the bolt and means normally held out of the path of movement of the fence, but adapted to be positively moved into position t0 obstruct the unlocking movement of the fence if the tumbler be moved from its normal position Vwith relation to the tence.
2. In a locl'z, the combination of a spindle, a driving cam thereon, a tumbler actuated Vby the driving cam, a fence cooperating with Y the tumbler to dog and to release the bolt,
and means normally heldV out of the path oi movement ofthe fence by the driving cam and adapted to move rearwardly or Vinwardly to a position over the 'fence in the event the driving cam be forced rearwardly.
3. In a lock, the combination of a spindle,
la driving cam thereon, a tumbler actuated by the driving cam, a fence cooperating with the tumbler to dog and release the'rbolt,
safety device normally held out of the path of movement of the fence by the cam and a spring for moving the safety device-into the ath of movement-of the tence in the eventv lof the displacement of the cam. Y'
11. vIn a lock, the combination of'a tence for dogging with the v:tence to permit the latter to move to release the bolt,.and a safety device normally held in inoperative position by said cooperating means, but adapted, in the event of the displacement o-kthe latter, Vto move into the path of movement of the enceand hold the same in its locking position. 'l'
5. Ina lock, the combinationl of a loclr',k
case, a spindle, a dialk and driving cam on the spindle, the driving cam being located withinthe lock case, tumblersV actuated by the cam, a fence and aspring pressed safety plate located inV front or1V the cam and northe bolt, means cooperating I mally held in inoperative' position by the latter but adapted to be moved into the path ofmovementfof the tence inthe event the cam be displaced rearwardly or inwardly.v
Z 6. In a lock, the combination of a' lock... case, a spindle", a dial and driving cam on the spindle, the driving cam being located withinthe lock case, tumblers also locatedwith- Y inthe vlock case and actuated the driving cam, a fence cooperating with'the tumblers,
and a spring pressed safety plate located in I 'rontof the cam and provided Ywith a pro-- jection restingwithina slot inthe case, the
said plate being 4normally held in inoperative position bythe cam but adaptedto be moved by its spring into the pathofmove-r ment of theV tence in the event thekcam be displaced''inwardly'.l Y L y In'testimony whereof, I have signed this speciiication inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses., f c Y Y y QROLIJIN C.
