To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH WrNoHEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Webb City, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whirling Seesaws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in that type of see saws adapted to have rotary or whirling motion imparted thereto during the operation of seesawing, and primarily it has for its p urpose to provide a simple and relatively inexpensive construction of an amusement apparatus of the kind stated, that is more especially `adapted for the amusement of `children and which has special provision for permitting the use thereof with absolute safety.
Another object of the invention is to provide an amusement apparatus of the character stated, in which the several parts thereof are so designed whereby to adapt such parts for being readily and quickly assembled for use and easily knocked down for storing or shipping them.
Furthermore this invention contemplates, in a whirling see saw, a peculiar mounting of the rocking element or see saw, upon a central support whereby to provide for the application of a simple and effective means for sustaining the seats, at the opposite ends of the rocking element, in constant horizontal position and held that the riders feet are so sustained that the act of applying the upward impulse to the rocking element, from the alternate ends thereof, imparts the desired rotary or whirling motion to the said rocking element as it is caused to swing in its up and down directions.
With other minor objects in view, hereinafter apparent, my invention embodies, in an apparatus of the character mentioned, certain features of construction and novel combination of parts thereof, all of which will be fully outlined in the following detailed descri tion, specifically stated in the appendec claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

being at their relatively edgewise closedv said bearing member is sustained and has rotary movement, the said standard with the beams and the central support or bearing member being shown separated.

In the practical development of my invention a suitable base or central support is provided, preferably in the nature of a tripod whose leg members l are joined at the upper ends by a metal cap 2, the said cap being suitably shaped for being secured to the leg ends by bolt and nut connections 3-3, as best shown in Fig. 4. At the lower ends the tripod legs are braced by tie rods 4 whose hook ends engage eye bolts 5 that are secured to the legs 1, the several connections mentioned being readily disconnected, so the legs 1 and the-cap member 2 may be quickly assembled or disconnected, as desired.
The rocking element, in my construction of see saw, consists of two beams (5*6 which are disposed in edgewise vertical relation and each beam has a separate fulcrum or pivot mount, each of the mounts being in the nature of a cross bolt, the two bolts 7 being secured, one above the other, in the bifurcated portion 8O of a metal bearing head 8, whose lower end terminates in a trunnion 81 that is adapted for being readily slipped into a central socket 20 in the cap plate 2, when the parts are assembled, as in Figs. 1, 2 ,and 3, it beingunderstood that when so placed the part 8 constitutes the support for'the rocking element 6 6 (seesaw) and vhas rotary movement on the central bearing member or plate 2.
Each -of lthe -beams 6 has a plurality of half round bearing seats 60 on the under face thereof for engaging with their respective pivot bolts 7, the lowermost one of which bolts Jforms the fulcrum 4 and engages the selected one of the seats 60 of the lower beam while the upper one of such bolts likewise constitutes the ulcruln for the upper beam 6.
The seats 60 beams are located midway their respective beam adjusting such beams desired leverage.
The said supports, in my construction of see saw, are alike for eachA end of the` apparatus and each of such supports consists of a pair of wooden uprights 9-9 located one at each' side of their respective beamA to which ends they are detachably secured by nutted bolts 10-10 located one above the other and pass through the ends oi in the lower edge of the the length o'li and they provide for to adapt them for the which their respective beams 6, the said boltstorming the means for sustaining the uprights in a xed vertical position as the beams are rocked, and thereby support the seat boards 11--11 in horizontal positions, at all times, as the beams are swung up and down and whirled around in the manner presently explained.
The uprights 9-9 project above ,the ends of the beams 6 and to the upper end orV each pair of uprights 9 is ixedly secured, inany suitable manner, a seat board 11, the said boards being positioned in the longitudinal direction of the beams.
The inner end of each board 11 is longitudinally grooved as at 11a seating onto the upper convex edge 62 of their respective ends of the upper beam 6 to thereby permit the seat boards interlocking with the said upper beam ends when they reach the limit of their downward direction, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1.and 3.
Each seat board 11 has a handhold 12 at each end thereof to enable the riders to hold themselves securely to the seat during the act of seesawing, the interlocking of the seat boards with their corresponding ends of the upper beam tending to take off undue strains on the supports 9 when giving the down ends oli' the see saw the upward impulse during the act of seesawing.
' When using the apparatus, the riders are positioned as indicated in the diagram, Fig. 6, and by reason of the manner in which the seat boards are sustained, with respect to the locking elements 6, and their connection lwith the upper beam, as stated, it follows that as the rider at one end reaches the limit of the down position, with his feet engag- .ing the ground, when pushing in the d irection indicated by the arrows a-a on Fig. 6, the down end of the see saw is caused to swing up as a rotary orwhirling motion is imparted to the rockingelement, (the beams vbetween the beams as ends to provide for;
6 6) in the direction of the arrow b-b on the said Fig. 6, thus, at one operation, the act of causing the downward end of the see saw to swing up and to whirl the beams 6&6 around, is eiected.
f As the two beams 6-6 have individual fulcrums arranged in the same vertical plane, the two beams tend to close together as the pass their midway position in their up an down motion, and to open up as they travel toward their said midway position. U-shaped metal guards 14 are provided, and they are attached to the under side of the upper beams 6 and have their pendent portions let-Ma lapped over the upper edge oi the lower beam to close over the space they separate, the guards being sustained suiiicient distance to avoid danger of the riders getting their hands or fingers vbetween he beams while seesawing.
Vear plates are secured on each side of the beams 6-6 where they pass between the forked end of the supporting member 8.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the completeconstruction, the manner of use and the advantages of my form of amuseiment apparatus will be readily apparent to Vin said support to turn around a vertical axis, a beam ulcrumed on said standard to rock on a horizontal axis and seats on said beam adapted to hold the users in a position transverse of the beam whereby, when the user pushes on the ground to rock the beam on its ulcrum the said beam will also be pushed to whirl the said standard on its axis, said'seats extending in the longitudinal direction of the beam and having handles at each end whereby the operators may sit sidewise and grasp the handles of the seats.

In a see saw, a support, a standard held on said support to turn on a vertical axis, a pair of parallel beams mounted in said standard to rock on their parallel horizontal axes, seat members having seats, and means connecting the adjacent ends of the said beams whereby to hold the seats level zontal axes, seat members having seats,
means connecting theadjacent ends of ,the said beams whereby to hold the seats level as the beams rock, said seats exalong the beam sides tending in the direction of the beams whereby the operator can sit sidewise of the beams and impart rocking and whirling motion to the beams, said seats extending' in the longitudinal direction of the beam and having handles at each end whereby the operators may sit sidewise and grasp the handles of the seats.
4. In a see saw, a support, a standard held on said support to turn on a vertical axis, a pair of parallel beams mounted in said standard to rock the parallel horizontal axes, seat members having seats, means connecting the adjacent ends of the said beams whereby to hold the seats level as the beams rock, and guard members on one beam to cover over the opening between the beams as they separate during the operation of tilting.
5. In a see saw of the character stated, wherein is provided a standard with parallel beams connected by vertical seat carrying bars at the ends of the beams; seats on the said bars having provision for receiving one of said beams when in the fully downwardl tilted position.

Iii a see saw, a support, a standard held in said support to turn around a vertical axis in either direction, a beam ulcrumed on said standard t0 rock on a horizontal axis, seats having handles at the ends of the same, said seats extending in the longitudinal direction. of the beam for holding the user in a sitting position transversely of the beam whereby when the user pushes on the ground to rock the beam on its fulcrum said beam will be caused to whirl with said standard on its axis in either direction according to the transverse position in which the user is sitting, and means for seats horizontal at all times regardless of the position of the beam.
