T 0 all whom it may concem Be it known that I, WILsoN R. MYERS, a citizen of the- United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a Machine for Mixing Ice and Salt and Packing Same in Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a machine or apparatus which has been especially designed for use in ice cream factories for the purpose of placing the ice and salt into the tubs which hold the ice cream cans and packing the same therein, in a quick, effective and efficient manner, thus reducing manual labor for the purpose to the minimum.
In its general nature, the invention comprises an ice hopper adapted to contain a quantity of broken ice and from which the ice is delivered, through a suitable duct, to the tub, means being provided for mixing salt Withthe ice in the delivery passage, and mechanism is also provided for tamping the mixture in the tub around the can to pack the same; and the invention further provides means for collecting. spilled ice and returning the same to the ice hopper.
In its more specific nature, the invention resides in the provision of means by which the volume of the ice discharged from the hopper may be controlled, and means whereby the salt may be delivered in measured quantities to the ice fiow or shut off entirely from delivery when desired; means are also provided for rendering easy the movements of the tubs into and out of place; and means are provided to prevent the packer damaging the can top while it is functioning.
Furthermore, the inventionresides also in those novel details of construction. combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of my invention.

In the drawings, in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 represents the ice hopper, which, in practice, is made of wood, lined with metal 2 or all metal and insulated with cork 3, the hopper being designed to deliver its contents into a restricted bottom chamber 4 in which a worm or screw conveyer 5 is located, the latter serving to deliver the ice to the down spout-or duct 6 by which the material is directed into the tubs.
The shaft 7 of the worm 5 is provided with a clutch 8 and gear 9, the latter meshing with a driving gear 10 on the line shaft 11. The line shaft is driven by a suitable means (chain drive being shown) 12 from the motor 13. a suitable clutch shifting lever being provided whereby an attendant may throw the clutch 8 into engagement, as desired. The line shaft 11 is journalled in suitable bearings 15 projectedfrom the standards 16 which support the ice hopper 1 as well as the salt hopper 17 and the motor 13.
The salt hopper 17, in practice, is preferably constructed of wood with a rust resisting metal bottom 18 and spout 19, the latter delivering into the ice duct 6 to mix the salt with the ice as it passes through the duct. 20 is a measuring wheel having pockets 21 to deliver the salt from the hopper to the spout 19 in measured quantities. The shaft 22 of the wheel 20 is driven from the ice feed screw shaft 7 through a chain drive 23 or other suitable means, a clutch 24- being provided for connecting and disconnecting the shaft 22 from the shaft 7. A. suitable clutch lever 25 enables the attendant to throw the clutcli24l and start the salt delivery.
The tubs T are brought into position by the attendant beneath the duct 6 on a rollway 26 and as the ice and salt are delivered into the tub the same must be tamped in order to distribute it evenly around the can C and pack it down. This is done by the tamping mechanism which comprises a frame 27 that is vertically slidable in a guideway formed by an upright post 29 and a parallel shaft 30, the member 29 being held below in a bracket socket 31 p j cted from The lower end of the shaft is carried in a bearing recess in a bracket 38 that is carried by the standard 16. i
The frame 27 has ways 39 to slide on the post 29 and shaft 30 and it also has bearings 40 for the crank shaft 41, the bearings being surmounted by I counterbalance cable 43 is fastened; the counterbalance cable takes over the sheaves .44 and is provided with a weight 45, as
shown. I The crank shaft 41 has a bevelled gear 46 to mesh with a bevel gear at? thatis slidabl y keyed to the shaft 30 and turns with it while sliding up and down with the frame 2?.
Motion is imparted to the shaft 30 to operate the shaft 41, by the bevelled gear connec- I tion 48'48 with the line shaft- 11.
The sliding frame 27 of the tamping. and packing mechanism has a bearing for the tamper rod 49 which receives reciprocation from the crank shaft 41 through the pitman connection 50. The tamper consists of a head 51 which is swivelled on the rod 49 and carries a set (preferably four)'of arms 52 having fiattenedends 53 and fastened to straddle the can C. A suitable resilient bumper or guard 54 is provided on the end of the rod 49 so as not to injure the can top.
In order to return any spilled ice to the ice hopper 1 a slatted conveyer 55 runs beneath the rollway and cooperates with a trough 56 to carry the ice back to an elevator 57'which returns it to the hopper 1. V The elevator 5'7 and the conveyer 55 may be driven in any suitable way, as, for example, by power'ltransmission connections 58-59 re spectively from the motor shaft.
"In order that the attendant standing in frontof the machine can conveniently throw the ice delivery screw clutch S, the clutch le ver '14 may be operated by a pedal 62 and cable connections 61, as shown.
In the practical. use of my invention, ice. is placed in the hopper 1 and the hopper 17. is filled with salt. An attendant moves a tub T into position, as shown,.where the same can'receive the ice and salt fromthe duct 6. The attendant then throws clutch 8 into mesh so as to set the .icedelivery screw 5 into motion and he also throws clutch 24: to effect operation of the salt delivery mechanism. As the ice is forced into the delivery duct 6 it will encounter the salt'that is being'admitted through the spout 19 and become ayoke 42 to which a salt dropping out of the duct 6 into the tub T. The operator taking hold of the frame 27 lowers it so as. to bring the tamper arms 52 into the tub around the can C, the reciprocating motion of the tamper thus servingto pack theice and distribute it evenly around the tub. As soon as the tub has been'filled,
7 thus allowing level flow of the mixed ice and salt, the salt feed is stopped by the operator throwing out clutch 24, thus allowing the tub to be topped off with freshice which forms a crust and holds the refrigeration. In apparatus of the class described, the combination with an ice hopper, a salt hopper, a delivering duct into which said hoppers discharge and which is designed to deliver the mixed salt and ice to receiving tubs, and a tamping mechanism for tamping the mixture in the tubs, of means for gathering spilled ice and returning it to the ice hopper.
8. In apparatus of the class described, means for delivering mixed ice and salt into a tub, and a tamping mechanism for tamping the mixture as it is delivered into the tub.
9. In apparatus of the class described, means for delivering mixed ice and salt into a tub, a tamping mechanism for tamping the mixture as it is delivered into the tub, and means for gathering spilled ice and conveying it away from the tub.
10. In apparatus of the class described, in combination with ice and salt hoppers, and means for delivering'the ice and salt to the tub to be filled, of a mechanism for gathering spilled ice and returning it to the ice hopper.
11. In apparatus of the class described, in combination with ice and salt hoppers, and means for delivering the ice and salt to the tub to be filled, of means for gathering spilled ice to be returned to the ice hopp'er.

In apparatus of the class described, the combination with means for delivering ice to the tub of a tamping device adapted to be raised and lowered into position in the tub to tamp the ice, a counterbalance forsaid tamping device, said tamping device including a reciprocating tamper, a crank shaft and pitmen for operating said tamper and power applying means for turning the crank shaft.

15. In apparatus of the class described, the combination with the ice and salt mixture delivery means, a rollway on which the tubs are moved and a spilled ice gathering mechanism beneath the rollway, substantially as shown and described.
16. In apparatus of the class described, a tub supporting means, means for delivering the ice to the tub, a tamping mechanism for packing the ice in the tub, said tamping mechanism comprising a vertically adjustable frame, a reciprocating rod mounted in said frame, a crank shaft and pitman connection with said rod for operating the same, a tamper mounted on the rod and including arms to straddle the can within the tub and a buffer on the lower end of said rod to protect the can top.
17. In apparatus of the class described, a tub supporting rollway, means for delivering the ice to the tub, a tamping mechanism for packing the ice in the tub, said tamping mechanism comprising a vertically adjustable frame, a reciprocating rod mounted in said frame, a crank shaft and pitman connection with said rod for operating the same, a tamper mounted on the rod and including arms to straddle the can within the tub and a buffer on the lower end of said rod to protect the can top, and a spilled ice gathering mechanism beneath the tub rollway for gathering and concentrating at a particular place the spilled ice.
18. In apparatus of the class described, means for mixing salt and ice and delivering the same to the tubs to be filled, means for packing the mixture in the tub, and means for gathering spilled ice and returning it to the ice and salt mixing means.
