To all whom, it may come m:
Be it known that I, Pnrnus TJEONARD Non- DIN, a citizen of the United States residing at Minneapolis, in the county of iHennepin 'and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Stamps, and I do hereby declare the following to be a fulhclear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others-skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention rel 'tes to improvements :in hand stamps and, more specifically to such stamps made for marking goods or packages or boxes containing goods delivered to .cold storage plants by stampingthereon, with ink, at the time of :receiring,"the license number of the plant, the receiving .date and an identifying number Certain States have laws requiring such markings and it often requires more than one day to deliver goods for storage and each 'lot must bear the date on which .the first delivery was made and, hence, the receiving clerk is required to change the date on 'his identifying stamp many times aday. My invention has for its object .to provide a stamp in which the dating and numhering apparatus may be very easily and quickly adjusted, together with other vimportant improvements hereinafter "noted,
To the above end, generally stated. the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of deviceshereinafter described and defined in the claims.

T he numeral 5 indicates a U-shaped main frame, to the sides of which, at their lower edges, are rigidly secured two outer platen bars 6 and 7. The width of the platen bar 6, at its lefthand end, is materially increased toward the platen bar 7, as indicated at 8.
An intermediate platen bar 9 is located between the platen bars 6 and 7 and spaced edgewise therefrom and has one of its ends secured to one oft-hesidesof the main frame 5 and its other .end is secured to the ex tension 8 of the platen bar 6. Preferably, as shown, the platen bars 6, 7 and 9 are in the form of inverted channels.
D Mounted on the platen bar 6 and its exten .sion 8 and on'the platen bars 7 and '9 are elastic beds 10, 11 and 12, respectively, of sponge rubber or other suitable material.
These beds 10, 11 and 12 are secured to the respective platen bars 6, 7 and 9 and the extension 8 by headed. guide pins 13, which are free to move endwise in the respective platen bars to permit said beds to independ- V The under faces .of the beds 11 and 12arecovered by channehwearing plates 1 1 and 15, respectively, held in position by certain of the headed guide pins 13. On the under face of that portion of the bed 10 mounted-on the platen thar 7 is a line of type yvhich reads as follows: Minn. License No. 1.? Also, on the under face of that portion of the bed 10 mounted in the platen extension 8 is a line of type. alignedwith the wearing plates '15, which reads as follows: Recd? A plurality of edgewise spaced type-carrying endless ribbons 16 are arranged to run over the wearing plate 14-. and overlying wheels 17 viournaled on a stationary shaft "18. the ends of which extend into slots in the sides of the .main frame 5 and are adjustably supported on bearing screws 19 having screw-threaded engagement with lugs 20 on the outer faces ofthe sides .of said mainframe. Obviously, these bearing screws 19 act as tighteners for the endless ribbons 16. To one end of each wheel 17 is secured a metal disk 21 having a notched periphery, the diameter of which is considerably larger than the wheel 17. These disks 21 may be engaged at diametrically opposite points by the fingers of an operators hand extended cured to each ribbon 16 are longitudinally spaced type 22 representing the di git-s naught to nine, inclusive, and the type 22, on the several ribbons 16, are arranged to be transvversely aligned on the wearing plate let to afitord a lot number, as shown in Fig 4c.

On one of the outer ribbons 23 are type 27 indicating the months o f the year arranged to be successively positioned on the wearing plate 15, on each of the two intermediate ribbons 23, are type 28 indicating the digits might to nine, inclusive, arranged to be transversely aligned on the wearing plate 15 to indicate the days of a month, and on the other outer ribbons 23 are type 29 indicating different years arranged to be successively positioned on the wearing plate 15. By adjustingvthe r1bbons 23, the type 27, 28 and 29 ,may be transversely aligned in various different arrangements on the wearing plate 15 after the word liecd. to indicate the month, the day of the month and the year, as shown in Fig. 1. A guiderod 30 is secured to the sides of the supplemental frame 26 for guiding the ribbons 23 to and from the wearing plate 15 to positionthe type 27, 28 and 29 thereon.
Secured to one of the ends of 'each of the wheels 24: is a metal disk 31 similar to the metal disks 21 and which disks 31 may be engaged, at diametrically opposite points, by the operators fingers while his hand is extended over the transverse portion of the supplemental frame 26. i A handle 32 is secured to the transverse portion ofthe main frame 5 by which the improved stamp may be carried and, operated. From the above description, it is evident that the lot number and the date may be very easily and quickly changed and,.in stamping boxes or packages having uneven surfaces, the elastic beds 10, 11 and 12 will yield so that all the letters and numerals on the stamping face of the device will rest evenly upon the surface thereof and thereby clearly and distinctly reproduce on the box or package the name of the State, the license number, receiving date and the lot number.
The above described device, in actual elastic usage, has proven highly efiicient for the purpose had in view.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a frame, of two outer platen bars and an intermediate "platen bar edgewise spaced the one from flanges, two sets of wheels journaled on the frame over the outer platen bars, elastic beds on the platen bars held by said flanges, channel wearing plates on one of the outer beds and the intermediate elastic bed type carrying ribbons arranged to. run over said wheelsr and said wearing plates, and type on the other outer elastic bed.
3. In a stamp of the kind described, the combination with a frame, of a platen bar, an elastic bed mounted on the platen bar, a guide pin extending completely through the elastic bed and mounted in the platen bar with freedom for endwise movement to permit compression of the elastic bed, and type on the under side oft-he elastic bed.
4. In a stamp of the kind described, the combination. with a' frame, of two outer -'pl.aten bars and anintermediate platen bar edgewise spaced the one from the other, two sets of wheels journaled on the frame directly over the outer platen bars, typecarrying ribbons arranged to run over said wheels and one of the outer platen bars and the intermediate platen bar, and type secured to the other outer platen bar.
5. In a stamp of the kind described, the combination with yoke-like main and supplemental frames, of two outer platen bars and an intermediate platen bar edgewise spaced the one from the other, elastic beds mounted on the platen bars, type secured to one ofthe outer elastic beds, two-sets-of wheels jQHI'IltLlGC l one set in each of said frames, and type-carrying ribbons-arranged to run over said wheels and the other elasth; bed and the intermediate elastic bed.
