SOLE AND HEEL FRAME.

Application filed March 5, 1921. Serial No. 449,273. a

This invention relates to sole and heel frames for shoes and it has for its object to provide a metallic frame permanently united with the body portion of a shoe and adapted to detachably receive soles and heels so that one sole or heel may be readily substituted for the other and thus render it possible for the user to wear leather or rubber heels or soles at will.

The device further renders it possible for the user to quickly substitute a new sole or heel for a worn sole or heel with a very slight effort, in a ve short time and without the use of skilled la or.

Like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.

Referring to the drawing 5 designates'a shoe having a thin sole element 6 and a thinheel element 6 permanently united with and constituting a part of the body of the shoe. The frame for the reception of the sole consists of a metallic strip 7 which overlaps the thin sole 6 sufliciently to permit of the frame being secured to said sole 6 by nails or like fastening devices, 8. A removable sole section 9 which may be of either rubber or leather has its edges undercut in such manner as to be engaged by an inwardly directed portion 10 of the frame 7. Metallic strips 11 and 12 are hin ed to the rear ends of the frame 7 at 13 and are swung transversely across the shoe and in rear of the otherwise open end of the frame 7, the sole section 9 is secured against removal from the frame 7. of the strips 11 and 12. I prefer to employ a flexible strap section 15, one end of WlllCh is secured to the strip 11 and the other end of which is adapted to detachably engage the strip 12 in any suitable way, such, forexample, as by an ordinary snap fastener 16 of a usual and well 'known construction. Such as is ordinarily employed upon gloves.

The structure at the heel of the shoeis substantiall the same as that which holds the sole. vT at is it comprises a metallic strip 17 having a portion 18 which overlaps the side of the part 6 of the body of the shoe and is secured thereto by nails or like fastening devices as indicated at 19.. The strip 17, however, does not extend as near to the bottom. of the heel 20 as the strip 7 extends to the bottom of thesole 9. Upon the contrary the stri 17 engages the removable heel sectlon 20 a jaoent its upper edge: and to this end the removable heel section 20 is provlded with a groove 21 extending therearound which receives an inturned flange 22 formed upon the lower edge of the plate 17 (see Fig. 5).

The inner end of the heel frame 17 is closed by strips 23 and 24 which are hingedly connected to the frame 17 at 25 and 26 and the ends of which strips are adapted to be united by a flexible strap section 27, one end of which is attached to one of the strips and the other end of which is united with the other of the strips by a snap fastening indicated at 28.

Thus if it be desired to substitute one section 20 for another, the snap fastening 28 may be released, the strips 23 and 24 swung outwardly and the new heel section 20 slipped into the open end of the frame 17 after which the strips 23 and 24 may be swung back to their former position and secured, thereby holding the heel section firmly in place within the frame 17.

The same procedure is followed in a new sole section 9 in the frame 7.

It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but that it includes within'its purview placing whatever changes fairly come within either dependent metallic frames, one extending around the toe of the shoe and one around the heel of the shoe, both of said frames comprising rounded end portions and substantially straight side. portions comprising inwardly directed flanges, transversely extending rigid closure strips-hingedly connected to the inner ends of the sides of each of said frames, means for exerting a drawing actlon upon and uniting the free ends of said strips and removableheel and sole seo NANNIE K.
