To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that MAURICE ToBIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, has invented certain new and useful I'm provements in Repair Links, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to repair links for chains of various sizes, and has for an object the providing of a relatively strong and durable link which may be easily and quickly substituted for a broken or worn link at any part of a chain throughout its length.
Another. object of the invention is to provide a link, the body portion of which may be constructed in one piece of substantially the same diameter throughout its length so that the body portion may be made from a length of stock material of a diameter equal to that of the finished link so that time and material are saved as it is unnecessary to work down the major portion of the link to leave outstanding parts as has been the case with a large number of prior devices. The invention further aims at the provision of a link having a body portion which extends around the ends of the link and presents an integral structure whereby the full strength of the material is had and whereby no undue strain or stresses are imposed upon the detachable section which is used for closing the side of the link. v
A further object of the invention is to provide a link open at one side only and which has its spaced end portions similarly constructed for receiving therein a closure portion which is similarly constructed at opposite ends, thus avoiding the necessity of delay and accuracy in properly matching the ends of the insertable portion with the ends of the link body.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an insertable member constructed with looking pins as a part thereof adapted to engage the end portions of the body of the link and to provide the body of the link with receiving portions for the pins whereby the insertable section only is provided with projecting parts, thus simplifying the construction of the body portion of the link and reducing the cost of manufacture.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the drawing, 10 designates the links of a chain which may be of any approved type or construction and with which the link of this invention may interfit. The repair link of this invention comprises a body portion 11 made from a length of stock material of desired diameter and suitable length and which has its end portions rolled or bent over to form hooks 12 which provide end portion for the link boc y. The extremities of the hooks 12 terminate in spaced relation and opposite each other at one side of the link to form a gap or opening 13. The ends of the hooks 12 are of like construction, and, as shown to advantage in Figs. 2 and 5, th same are recessed at opposite sides as at 14s, and the wall of the recess is sloped or inclined from the shoulder 15 0f the recess to the extremity of the hook 12 thus providing a tapering seat 16. The wall of the recess 14 is transversely flat and is provided intermediately in the face thereof with a depression 17 of substantially semispherical contour and which terminates at its forward end in an abrupt shoulder 18, the same continuing beyond the plane of the flat wall 1 1 and forming the inner end of a complementally formed lug 19. The extremity of the hook 12, at the end of the seat 16, is provided with a transverse groove 20 which is concave from the inner to the outer wall of the seat 16, and which terminates in a forwardly projecting portion 21 of the hook, providing a lip. The concave groove 20 of the ends 12 are so arranged as to form arcs of a circle whose center lies between the spaced apart ends12 and the axis of which i coincident with the axis upon which turns an insertable closure member 22 arranged to close the gap 13 in the link. This insertable member 22 is provided with an enlarged middle portion corresponding in diameter substantially to that of the ends 12 and which is cut away at opposite sides and opposite ends to form like end tongues 23 which taper toward their outer ends and are coinplcmental to the seats 16 for forming therewith continuations of the exterior cylindrical surface of the body of the link. The tongues 23 are provided with the depression 17 and the lugs 19 in a manner similar to the formation of the ends 12 of the body of the link so that the tongues 23 and the seats '16 interfit and interlock when the insertable section 22 is swung into place.
For the purpose of rigidly securing the in sertable section in the gap 13, the lugs 18.0f the section 22 are provided with out-standing rivet pins 24. which are adapted to enter openings 25 formed in the bottoms of the depressions 17 of the ends 12. From Fig. 2 it will. be noted that the openings 25 have coun'tersinks 26 in their outer ends and into which may be swaged or upset the ends of the pins 25 for riveting the parts together.
In the manufacture of the link the depressions and lugs 17 and 18 are similarly formed in all fou interfitting parts and the only difierences in the formation of the ends of the body 11 and the removable section 22 is in the provision of the lips 21 on the body section 10 and the formation of the diagonal end faces or shoulders 27 on the removable section 22.
In assembling the link it is only necessary to lift out the removable section 22 and engage the ends or hooks 12 of the body portion through the adjacent links 10 of a chain. The section 22 is now inserted in the 13 in the diagonal position shown in Fig. 5 with the tongues '28 extending above and below the seats 16 and facing the latter. The section 22 is now turned to swing the tongues 23 down upon the seats 16 and the pins 24 projecting into the openings 25 while the lugs 19 of the tongues andseats move hehind each other and into the opposite depressions 17 The shoulders 18 are thus relatively deep and provide a substantial re sistance to the drawing out of the ends 12 of the link when the latter is subjected to abnormal strain.
It is of course understood that various changes and modificationsmay be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifica tions being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.

A repair link comprising a body portion interrupted at one side to form a gap thereat and having locking ends facing in opposite directions, and an insortable section adapted to be fitted crosswise in the gap between said ends of the body portion and having complemcntal locking ends facing in opposite directions, whereby the locking ends of the body portion and the insertable section may he interlocked upon the axial turning of the latter on an axis intersect ng the gap between the ends of the body portlon.

A detachable link for chains, compris ing a body section having a gap at one side, an insertable section arranged to fit in the gap, said body section and said inserta-ble section having complemental seats and tongues adapted to belorought togetherupon the swinging of the insert'able section in said gap, said seats and tongues having depressions therein and lugs projecting therefrom in complemental relation to the depresslons whereby the lugs are adapted to interfit with said depressions upon the closing of the tongues on the seats.

having its ends reduced in thickness and similarly formed with depressions and projections, and an insertable section arranged to fit between the ends of the body portion and having similarly formed extremities provided with depressions and projections'arranged complemental to the depressions and projections of the body portion, said insertbeing adapted to be turned in the gap for interlocking the projections in' the depressions and closing the open side of the link. t
