Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 2, 1922,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER W. NEL-' son, a citizen of the United States, residing in the cit of Newark, county of Essex, and State of ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Angle Plates, of which the following is a' full, exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, refe'r-' ence being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked any angular position relative to said support or base, thereby increasing the simplicity of the construction and operation of the device, by decreasing the number of parts of which the usual device is composed; by lessening or avoiding the necessity for adjustmnet of the various parts, and by increasing the convenience in manipulation of the device.
To this end, I have made changes in this device from similar devices; all with the object of increased efficiency.
With these ends in View, my invention consists in novelties of construction and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
While the preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, yet it is to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the sec e thereof. n the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout Figure 1 represents, a side elevation of my improved device. 1 v

Figures 10 and 11 represent, respectively, a plan view and side elevation of the bracket which is designed to be pivotally mounted upon the guide block represented in Figures 8 and 9, and v Figure 12 represents, a side elevation of the angle plate which is designed to be rotatively mounted upon the bracket illustrated in I Figures 10 and 11 of the drawings.
In the drawings 1 represents a suitable support preferably of iron, which may be of any desired or convenient shape, and provided with a pair of slotted lugs or extensions 2-2, by means of which said support can be secured to a machine.
" The support 1 in its upper side is recessed and provided with a beveled ortapered annular seat 3 to receive a correspondingly beveled or tapered base 4 adapted to be rotated in said support 1, in a manner to be hereinafter described.
Integrally formed upon the top of said base are guides 5-5 designed to receive the guides 6 of the standard 7, which is designed to have sliding engagement with the base 4 in a horizontal direction.
- These three essential elements, namely, the support 1, the base 4 rotatively mounted upon said support and the standard 7 which is slidably secured to the base 4 constitutes the support upon which is ivotally mounted the angle plate. Adjustably and pivotally secured to the'standard 7 by means of a stud 8, is a bracket 9 the rear surface of which is provided with two apertured ribs 10--1() which straddle the standard'7, which is correspondingly apertured to receive said stud-8, and by means of which said bracket is ivotally secured to said standard 7.
The front of the bracket!) is similarly recessed as the support 1 and likewise provided with a beveled or tapered annular seat or surface 11 to receive a correspondingly beveled or tapered extension 14 formed on the rear surface of the angle plate 12, the
stood that the lower surface of the support 1 is likewise provided with a flat and true surface, so that when the parts are in the position illustrated in the drawings, a movement of a proximately 90 degrees or more of the ang e plate 12 may be obtained. 4 These two essential elements, namely, the bracket 9 and the angle plate 12, which is rotatively mounted upon said bracket, constitute the angle plate proper which is pivotally secured upon the support.
In order to impart rotary motion to the angle plate 12, a worm wheel 13, is preferably formed integral therewith, adjacent to the tapered extension 14 which engages with the annular seat 11 of the bracket 9.
This worm wheel 13 engages with a worm 15 secured to a shaft 16 which is suitably mounted in the lower portion of the bracket 9, the end of said shaft 16 projecting outside of said bracket and having secured thereto a handle 17.
The beveled or tapered extension 18 of the angle plate 12 is provided with suitable graduations so that the plate 12, may be accurately set to any desired degree by means of the worm 15 and worm wheel 13. The angle plate 12 is further provided with a centrally arranged stud 19, said stud being screw threaded to receive a screw threaded tapered washer 20:, and a lock nut 21, the tapered was-her being designed to be received by the tapered aperture formed in the rear face of the bracket 9, and by means of which the said angle plate 12: is secured to the bracket.
In order to impart rotary motion to the base A, a worm wheel 22,.is formed integrally with the underside of the said base, said worm wheel 22, designed to engage with a worm 23 which is formed on one end of a shaft 24 suitably -mounted in the support 1. The end of the shaft 24: projecting outside of said support being provided with a handle 25. A stud 26 centrally secured to the underside of the base 4;, is screw threaded at its free end and-designed to have, screw threaded engagement with a tapered washer 27 and a lock nut 24:. 1
The tapered washer 27, being designed to be received by the tapered aperture formed in they underside of the support 1 and by means of which the base 4 is secured to the support. I
The beveled or tapered upper surface of the base t is provided with suitable graduations 28 so that the basea may be accurately set to any desired degrees by means of the worm wheel 22 and worm 23.
The edge of one of the ribs 10 of .the bracket 9, has formed integrally therewith a worm segment 29 designed to have engagement with a worm 30, mounted upon a shaft 31 suitably located in the standard 7, the end of said shaft 31 being provided with a handle 32. By meansv of the segmental screw threaded tapered washers and lock nuts. The tapered washers being designed to engage with the tapered apertures formed in the faces of the ribs 10.
Suit-ably located on the top surface of the I base 4, is an apertured lug 34 which has engagement with the screw 35, one end of which has screw threaded engagement with a screw threaded hole 36 formed in the standard 7, by means of which the standard may be adj ustably and slidably secured upon said base 4, as clearly illustrated in the drawings.
Experience has demonstrated that the organization above described is a highly officient one, and while I have shown the preferred embodiment of my present invention, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as
obvious modifications thereof, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departures from what is herein set forth, I consider within the scope and terms of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, what ll desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s 1. A device of the character described, comprising asupport, provided with a recessed and beveled annular seat, a base provided with a correspondingly beveled portion rotatively mounted upon the annular seat of said support, a standard slidab-ly secured to the base, a bracket adjustably and pivotally secured to the standard provided with a recessed and beveled annular seat, an angle plate provided with a correspondingly beveled portion rotatively mounted upon the said bracket and means for changing the angular position of said angle plate.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a support, a base rotatively mounted upon said support, a standard slidably secured to the upper surface of the base, a bracket adjustably and pivotally secured to the standard and an angle plate rotatively mounted upon said bracket.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a support, adapted to be secured to a machine or the like, a base mounted upon said support provided with means adapted to be engaged by means carried by said support for rotating said base upon said support, a standard slidably secured to the upper surface of the base, a bracket adjustably and pivotally secured to the standard, means located on said bracket designed to engage with means carried by said standard This specification signed and witnessed for changing the angular position thereof; this 8th day of May, 1919.
