PORTFULIO FOR SHEET MUSIC.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ft a tenterl llliay We,
Application filed A ril 3, 1920. serial no. 371,138.
To all wiwmz't may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL Wrnmmwr STALL- ING, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State .of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Portfolio for Sheet Music, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to portfolios for sheet music and particularly to a device of this character which may he used by orchestras, bands, choirs, and like assembly of musical performers, for holding double sheets, single sheets, and single sheets having double numbers of musical pieces and having facility for ready reference by constantly visible numerals to disclose the location in the folio of any musical composition therein.
A. further object or advantage of the invention is to provide an inexpensive portfolio for sheet music containing the above mentioned features for lying upon music stands used by orchestras and bands and having great flexibility, so that it will open and remain open and constantly show the page reference numerals, and also provided with flexible and adjustable means for holding sheet music.
l. attain these objects and advantages by means of the arrangement and combination of parts illustrated in. the accompanying drawing in Which -Figure 1, is a perspective view of a portfolio for sheet music embodying my invention and Figure 2, is a side view of the adjustable means for holding single sheets, including the cable in cross section and fragments of sheet music.
Similar numerals refer to parts throughout the several views.
The portfolio consists of a book 1, having a plurality of flexible leaves 2, bound together and provided with a flexible cover 3. The leaves are made of suitable flexible board or sheets which are dimensioned a little larger than the sheet of music, to provide a suitable margin of the leaves outside of the sheet of music. Tags 4, are attached on the side edges of the leaves and numerals, as shown at 5, are stamped or imprinted thereon, in such a manner that like numerals shall appear on the tags when the book is open, on both pages of the opened book.
The tags are preferably made of fabric, but they may be made of metal without decorresponding parting from my invention. The tags mentioned are arranged in numerical order, from the top to the bottom of the pages, so as to be constantly visible when the book is uncovered or opened. the book and is arranged to lie snugly in the fold of the leaves. A plurality of yielding transparent clips 7, are
the edges of the sheet music placed therein and turning on said cable to turn over the sheet of music. Theleaves are provided with angularly disposed corner straps 8, of transparent material, such as flexible celluloid, so that music notes thereunder may be easily read. Yielding clips 9, are mounted on the transparent clips 7, and are arranged to press the latter tightly upon the sheet music held thereby and slide on the cable 6, therewith.
The straps 8, are disposed diagonally across the corners of the leaves, so as to include substantially one-third of the sheet music thereunder, and the ends of the straps are turned over and under the leaves and attached thereon by any suitable attaching means, as shown at 10, in Figure 1, 11', is a sheet of music comprising a single sheet having musical composition on both sides thereof and which is shown turned over and lying-on the leaf at the opposite side of the cable, the clips being shown by dotted lines, 12, is a double folding sheet of music and which is held in place on both sides of the cable, by the latter and the strapsS.
The musical numbers to be played at any perfmimance, by any assembly of musicians, are arranged in the hook desired, the double page numbers being passed under the cables 6, and their lower corners placed under the straps S. The single page numbers are placed between the clips 7, and are held in place by virtue of the pressure of the clips 9, thereon. If the musical number of the double page sheet is to be played, the leader announces the numeral associated with the pages holding the number to be played, in this instance number the players readily turn. "When, in due course, the players must read the notes on the page covered by the single sheets, the same are turned over upon the pagerendered, all the sheets held by the clips being carried over at the same time, the clips training over on the cable. If a single sheet PI'()Vl(.lG(l with musical numbers on both A. cable 6, is bound with slidably arranged on the cable and are adapted for holding on numeral 7, to which front and back, it is rotated over to display the oppositeside of the sheet. The reference or index numbers on the tags are arranged on both sides of the same, to provide ready means for locating, forwardly and backwardly, any index number called by the leader, to locatethe desired musical number, the index numerals being constantly visible to the player, as shown in Figure 1. Having described my invention What I claim is- The combination With a book portfolio for loose sheets having a plurality of leaves, of a cable combined with the book and arranged between the leaves, and a clamping .15)
member slidably and rotatably mounted on said cable, said clamping member comprising a flexible transparent gripping lneniber adapted for frictionally receiving said cable and for receiving loose sheets and a yielding
