' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAURA E. MAILLEUE, 0F VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
SURGICAL BULB'I. .S'UBSTITUTE.
Application filed May 14,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURA E. lVL-XILLEUE, a subject oi Great Britain, and resident of Vancouver, Province of Britlsh Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Surgical Bust Substitutes, of which I hereby declare the following to be a iliull, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of the invention are to provide a convenient and comfortable substitute for the bust of a woman, which has been removed by a surgical operation, and whlch will relieve the flattened appearance caused by the operation and will reproduce the exact shape of the amputated part.
The invention includes means for attaclr ing the device to either the right or left side of the subject, and for making it ad ustable to fit the form closely so that the natural appearance of the figure will be restored and the attaching means will not interfere with the [it of the clothing worn over it.
The invention comprises the bust substitute or padded member, and the manner of constructing the same and oi attaching it to the figure hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawings, F 1g. 1 is a perspective of the device, showino the method of attaching the same, Fig. 2, 1s a transverse section of the substitute bust, showing the manner of constructing the same and Fig. 3 is a. perspective view oi? the device removed from the subject.
In these views, A is the bust substitute generally which comprises a base in the form of an annular casing A, preferably formed of soft chamois skin, having a filler B. This annular casing A. is extended upon a ring C formed of whale bone or other somewhat resilient material which will retain the shape of the casing.
Arched above the casing are shown, resilient strips D, crossing each other, which are covered on the outer and inner sides with layers D of suitable light and dainty ma terial such as dimity, or silk, and, if desired, a layer of cotton or other cushioning ma terial (not shown) may be interposed between the outer and inner layers D, D.
Inasmuch as this last feature constitutes Specification cf Letters Patent.

no essential part of my invention, is so obvious, and its presence in the drawing would tend to confuse, it is deemed advisable to omit it from the illustration.
The edge may be finished with a border of lace it desired, thus giving an attractive appearance to the device. In order to secure the substitute bust in place so that it can not move about after it has been attached, a shoulder strap E is attached at one end to the upper edge of the casing, preferably a little to one side of the center and the other end of the shoulder strap is attached to a belt F which passes around the body and back underneath the arm pits.
This belt is permanently attached to the substitute bust at G, at one end, and is provided with attaching means at H, H, at the other end. To permit the belt and shoulder strap to accommodate themselves closely to the contours of the body, the central portion of the shoulder strap, where it passes over the shoulder, is formed of elastic fabric at I, 1. Two narrow bands being employed to permit them to fit closely the curves of the shoulder, and the portions of the belt where it passes under the arms are preferably formed of three narrow elastic bands at the attached side, and two or more at the de tachable side, thus permitting the bands to automatically accommodate themselves to the curves of the side.
A central portion of the belt is formed of a wide fabric band, the ends of which curve downwardly, thus making it lit perfectly the back and shoulder blades. In this manner, a perfect restoration of the original figure is obtained and the elastic holding bands are flattened over the sides and back and shoulder so that they can not be noticed underneath the clothing.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. A surgical bust substitute comprising an annular casing of soft pliable material, a filler disposed within said casing, a frame composed of resilient strips arched above and secured to said casing, a fabric cover for said frame, and means for attaching the structure to a iEorm.
