EUGENE o. Knox/mass, or CHICAGO,'IL maWOIS. f
BURGLAR ALARM AND Loon.
Application Ied'June 20, 1921.
To all tf1/0m t may concern.'
c Be it known that EUGENE C. KLoMrAss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing` at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, has invented new and useful Improvements .in Burglar Alarms and Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and eiiicient combined burglar alarm and keyless door lock adapted for attachment to a door jamb or casing in position for arrangement either in operative or inoperative position according` to the preferences of the occupant of a room, apartment or building and in connection with which the same may be used, to the en'd that it may be permitted to remain as a permanent attachment subject to requisition as the conditions may require; and more especially to provide a device of the type indicated which not only serves as a means of impeding or preventing the opening of a door or like swinging closure but gives notice by the sounding of an alarm in the event of an attempt to open the door from the outside; and with these objects inview the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which shown in the wherein:
Figure 1 is a view of a device accompanying drawings,
embodying the invention applied to a door, the same being shown in its operative position.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the de vice in its inoperative or folded position.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. y
The `device consists essentially of a base plate having hingedly connected members 10 and 11 of which the former constitutes an attaching member and the latter a swinging member adapted to be folded parallel with the face of a door casing 12, said attaching member being secured to the side of the casing for concealment by the edge of the door 13 when the latter is in its closed position, so that the heads of the screws 14 or like fastening means are con ealed and protected by the door.
The swinging member carries a bolt 15 Specification of Letters Patent.

mounted at one end in a guide ear 16 and near the other end in a guide 17 for arrangement with its terminal head 18 in the path of opening movement of the door when the swinging member is in its operative position in a plane perpendicular to the door as shown in Figure 1, said bolt being withdrawn from the path of the door when the swinging plate is moved to the folded position indicated in Figure 2 to permit of the free opening movement of the door. The bolt is slidably mounted in the guides 16 and 17 and is operatively lconnected with an alarm mechanism consisting of a bell 19 cartion and the bolt in the path of opening movement of the door any attempt to open the latter will cause longitudinal movement of the bolt and hence the sounding of the alarm to notify the occupant of the room or apartment of the effort to enter the same. At the same time said bolt being of substantial construction serves as a means of preventing the opening of the door by presentmovement.
The swinging plate is adapted to be held in its operative position against displacement by the movement of the door by means of a hook 2O mounted for example upon the casing by means of a screw eye 21 and adapted for engagement with a staple 22 carried by the swinging member.
The folding of the swinging member to remove the locking device from the p the door may be effected upon the disengagement of the hook from the staple 22, and the return of the device to its operative against the stop rod 15.
aving described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is A device for the purpose described having a base plate consisting of hingedly connected attaching and swinging' members of which the former is adapted to be secured to the ber in its operative position, and consisting of a hook mounted upon the'door casing for. detachable engagement with the swinging member and arranged in bracing relation therewith.
