To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES STANLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the countyof New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Level, Plumb, Square, and Measure, of

which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to. a combined level,

plumb, square and rule or measure.

The prime object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and durable device possessing the maximum of efficiency at a minimum of cost in construction.

Another object of this invention is to so construct the device that it will furnish positive indications or visual readings at any of twelve points, four at the outside, four at its right side, and four at its left side.

Another object of my invention is to provide a combined devicewhich. will square,

inside and outside angles, and whose exterior faces or sides of its frame are provided with a scale of inches sub-divided, while the lateral extension formed at one portion of the frame is so marked on its inner or upper face, that the device serves the purpose of a rule or measure.

Further objects ofthe invention are to provide a drawn annular transparentcelluloid spirit tube having a filling orifice on its inner periphery, thereby furnishing a continuous smooth inner top surface to the tube which does not retard the quick action of the air bubble within the tube; and to provide my combined device with a central orifice therethrough to facilitate its handling while in use.

The foregoing and such other objects as may appear from the ensuing description are attained by the construction, combination, arrangement, and location of the parts hereinafter more fully described, such as illustrated by the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, it being understood that slight changes in the precise form, proportions, and minor details of the construction may be resorted to without departing from a part of the specification, it will be seen that Figure 1, is a perspective of the improved dev ce embodying my invention.

In carrying out my invention, as illustrated, the numeral 1 represents the outside. frame member, preferably made of steel, formed with four equal sides with an elongated orifice 2 formed through each of its sides, and through its top and bottom portions, said frame having a lateral integral extension 3 formed thereon with its inner or upper face marked with a scale of inches subdivided, while the other portions of the frame are marked in a similar manner on their outer faces, whereby the said frame is adapted to serve the purpose of a rule or measure, and said extension 3, also serves as an additional support for the device.

Numeral 4 designates the housing, which is composed of two pieces or members made of any suitable metal or composition, either spun, stamped, or moulded, each member being formed with a central opening therethrough, and an annular groove 5 formed within its inner face, said groove being of semi-circular formation in cross-section,

with a plurality of right angular outward extensions or flanges 8 at its peripheral portion, which are adapted to engage the inner face of the frame 1, and fitted within the central opening) formed in the housing is a clamping thim le 9, preferably formed of two'annular ieoes of any suitable metal 01. other materia J clamping extension 10 adapted to engage the outer face of each housing member, one piece being provided with an'inwardly extending exteriorly threaded annular member 11 and the other with an interiorly threaded inwardly extending annular member 12, and each member having an integral lateral serrated or roughened extension 13, said extensions 13 being adapted to be grasped by the hand for screwing the threaded members of the clamping thimble together, thereby causing the extensions 10 to engage the outer faceof each member of the housing and compress them together with the spirit tubefi. within the circular opening formed by the two members of the housing when thus secured or locked together, the annular clamping members 11 and 12 surrounding the opening formed through the housing members and forming a central opening through the device for facilitating the handling of the same while in use.

The circular transparent. spirit tube 6 may be made of any suitable material of the shape substantially as shown in Fig. 3, with a filling orifice 14 formed through its inner peripheral surface, thus leaving its outer surface perfectly smooth so as not to interfere with the quick action of the air bubble formed Within said tube, since when the filling orifice is formed in its outer peripheral surface it has a tendency to retard and interfere with the prompt action of the said air bubble, but I preferably make the said spirit tube of drawn transparent celluloid, with the filling orifice formed through its inner peripheral portion as above referred to, and to accelerate the action of the air bubble a small drop of quicksilver may be added to the spirit within the circular tube.

It will be perceived that a device constructed as shown, and as hereinbefore referred to may be easily handled while in use, and will readily and efficiently serve the purposes of either a level, plumb, square or measure.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the frame 15 is composed of wood, having a semi-circular recess 16 formed centrally throughv its upper and lower portions, a circular opening 17 formed at each side of its central portion, and a perpendicular opening 17 formed through its central portion, as shown by dotted lines, for the reception of the circular spirit tube, which is supported within the frame by the metallic plates 18, fixedly secured to the upper and low'er'receased face of the frame across the semi-cireach piece having an integral cular recess 16,-each plate having-a central elongated opening therethrough .to ex to Viflw theirit tube and air bubble which can be the frame when used as a level, and the spirit tube is so positioned within the frame 15, that a portion of the tube projects partly within. each circular opening 17, in order that the said tube and bubble may be easily inslpected when the device is used as a plumb will also be obvious that the device such as shownand described may be readily utilized to square both-inside and outside angles.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is a 1. A combined level, plumb, square and measure, comprising a frame formed with four equal sides, a metallic housing fitted within said frame formed of two members, each of said members having extensions adapted to contact with the inner face of said frame, a circular opening formed by said housing, a circular spirit tube seated in the circular opening, and means for locking the housing around said tube.

2. A combined level, plumb, square and measure, comprising a metallic frame with an opening! formed centrally through its refiily seen atithe topor bottom of.

top, bottomand each end thereof, a housing formed of two members, each metallic member having a seml-circular annular groove formed in its inner face and adapt- .ed to register to form a circular opening,

and each member having a plurality of right angle outward extensions adapted to engage the inner face of the frame, centrally arranged clamping means for locking said members together, and a spirit tu be seated within said circular opening formed by the housing members.

A device of the character described, comprising a metallic frame provided with an orifice through its top, bottom, and each end thereof, a metallic housing formed of two members adapted to contact with the inner face of' the said frame, each member formed witha central opening and a circular groove formed in its inner face, and each member provided with a series of recesses formed in its peripheral portion adapted to register with the orifices formed throu h the frame, a circular spirit tube seated wit in the circular grooves formed by the housing member, and central threaded clamping means for securing the housing memand a central opening, each member having a circular groove formed in its inner surface with a series of recesses formed in its peripheral portion adapted to register with the orifices formed in the frame, a spirittube seated within a circular opening formed by the housing and a threaded locking thimble adapted to lock the housing members t0gether.-

A device of the character described, comprisin a metallic frame provided with a central ori ce formed through its top, bottom and each side thereof, ahousing composed of two metallic members'having a plurality of right angle outward extensions adapted to engage the inner faces of the frame, and formlng -a circular opening therein when clamped together, a circular spirit tube provided with an air bubble within said tube, and annular threaded clamping means for locking the housing together with a circular opening therethrough.
