To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. WILLEAM M. CHAP- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford City, in the county of Blaclrford and State of Indiana, have in vented a new and useful ll/lail Box, of which the following; is a spec fication.
This invention relates to deposit and collection receptacles, and more particularly to deposit and collection receptacles formed with transparent walls, whereby the interior may be viewed through the walls of the receptacle.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a novel form of cover for a deposit and collection receptacle of this type, whereby a person may remove the contents of the receptacle.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for guarding the letter receiving slot of the cover. to prevent rain or moisture from entering the receptacle.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a front elevational view disclosing a deposit and collection receptacle constructed in accordance with the present invention, and showing a cover as applied.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the body portion of the receptacle which is formed preferably of transparent material and formed with a flange 6 at the upper end thereof.
The cover forming the essence of this invention, embodies a depending flange 7 which has its lower extremity turned inwardly as at 8 to position itself behind the flange 6 and prevent removal of the cover.
Formed integral with the flange 7, and disposed at the rear thereof are the upwardly extending ears 9 which are formed with tubular portions 10 adapted to accommodate a pin for securing the protector 11 to the body portion or flange 7.
The protector 11 is also formed with flanges 12 extending downwardly from the sides thereof, which flanges embrace the ivoted closure member 13 to prevent moisture from entering the member 13 from the sides; The member 13 is formed with a slot 14 whereby articles may be inserted in the receptacle. Formed at the rear of the member 13 are upwardly extending cars 15, which have tubular portions 16 adapted to embrace the pin 17 which provides a part of the hinge between the pivoted sections of the cover.
Secured to the forward portion of the member 13 is a hasp 18, which hasp is I formed with an opening to receive the staple 19 which is designed to accommodate a suitable padlock to prevent unauthorized persons from gaining access to the interior of the receptacle. The hasp is relatively long, and has the lower portion thereof bent upwardly as at 19 to provide a paper holder, whereby papers or relatively large articles may be hung on the mail box.
Secured to the under surface of the protector- 11, is a card support indicated at 20, whereby the owner of the receptacle may place his card therein to facilitate the delivery of mail.

. what is claimed as new is A cover for deposit and collection receptacles including a body portion comprising a depending flange, a hinged closure having a receiving slot,.upwardly extending ears forming a part of the hinged closure, a protector hingedly connected to the closure, a hasp forming a part of the closure, a staple carried by the body portion and adapted to pass through the hasp and receive a padlock for securing the closure in a closed position.
