ASSEMBLED PRINTING FORM.
APPLICATION FILED AuG.20, I92I.

BUB/NIE 1. CRAIG, OF CLEVELAND, UHU), ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN MULTIGRAPH COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION 0F OHIO.
ASSEMBLEE) PRINTING EGEM.
Application filed August 20, 1921. Serial No. 493,830.
'0 LZZ 107mm. t may concern:
5e it known that lt, BUnNin J. CRAIG, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and uset'ullmprovenient in Assembled YPrintingr Forms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.` This invention relates to assembled printing forms wherein the characters are pi'essed or embossed on strips which are removably secured on a holdingr member. The invention is adapted for use with address plates which comprise holdingmembers having nicans for securing` an address printing niember thereon.
Une oi the objects of the invention is to provide simple effective means for holdiimc an embossed strip or like member on a plate. more specific object ot' the invention is to so construct the holding or mountingr plate to accomplish a reinforcing et the plate holder by means which provide a continuous elevated support for the print-ingr characters.
Additional objects of the invention will be apparent trom the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view partly in section sho-wing` a printing plate embodying my invention; Fin'. 2 is a top plan view of the plate; Figi. 3 is a section on line 3-3 Fig. 2; Fig. l is a section on line 1 -1 Fig. 2; and 5 is a section on line 55 Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters l have shown a printing plate atm 10. This plate may be ot metal or other inaterial and may be adapted for use in any type of holder. for instance. one of the type shown in theprior application Serial. llo. 410,710, liled September 16. 1920 by Clifton Chisholm.
The plate 10 is shown as provided with a plurality of longitudinally extendingia ribs or corrugations 12, which may extend substantially parallel with Side edges ot `the plate and are shown as terminating at spacerv distances from either end of the plate.
Oppositely disposed projections 1-1 are shown at spaced intervals along the corrugations 12. These projections may be formed by slitting the inaterial of the plate along onposed. curved lines 1.6, land then pushing the plate and which may ser'vc to hold a printing character in position. The printing characters used with my plate may comprise ein bossed strips 20 having the characters 21 aised thereon. These strips 20 are provided with opposed, inwardly directed, tlangfes 22 which are adapted to engage beneath the projections 14 of the plate 10 and to be held in place thereby. A printing; strip o1' the character described is shown in application Serial No. 462.250 tiled April 1S, 1991, by Clifton Chisholm.
Any number ot' print-ing strips majr be provided on the plate.' These may each coni prise but a single line of characters or, if desired; two or more lines of characters may be used on the same strip. In the latter case the character strip would overlap two or more rows of projections.
My invention is adapted for use in connection with plate holders for addressing' inachines or in rotary printing presses wherein the printing characters are held upon rotat ingr printing drums.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
1. A. plate having a longitudinal rib thereon to provide a continuous elevated panel and having holding projections struck from said plate adjacent said panel.
2. A holder 'for an impression member comprising a plate having a plurality of longitudinally spaced projections thereabove and havingl a continuous supporting panel for the printing member associated with said projections.
3. A. printing member comprising a holder having a continuous strip supporting' rail thereon, said rail having spaced lateral projections `struck therefrom and adapted to be engaged by a printing ineinet. A plate having a longitudinal channel therein. said channel providing an elevated panel. tongues struck ltrom saidvplate adjacent said panel and a printing strip having a port-ion thereof secured to said tongues.
5. A plate eoniprisinT a body portion hav4 ing a strip supporting rail raised into a plane above the hotly portion to provide il continuous Support. said rail beingy provided with spared lateral projections. and a printing' strip havingr ovm-hanging edges engaginer said projections.
(i. A printingr strip holder havinzgr spaeed projecting,- tonguesl thereon. said tongues facing in opposite diret-tions and arranged above the body7 of the holder. said tongues being joined by a web also raised above the body ot the holder. the portion intt mediate the tongues being' elevated above the holder.
7. A holder` comprising@r a plate having a plurality ot' rowsI ofalternately farine' spared projections thereon lying in a plane parallel to the body ot' the holder and a eontinuous rib extending lengthwise of the holder, said projections havingl` their roots adjaeentsaid rib.
S. characterprintingstripholderhaving a row of projeetions thereon. .said projc'ations being severed from the holder and raised tliereabove to provide overhanging portions. there being a eontinuous longitudinal elevated bed above the plane ot' the plate holder, intermediate the projeetions.
9. A printingv strip holder having a row of opposed spaced projeotions pressed there from. each projection being connected with i the holder only by two portions'whieh are,
narrower than the head of the projet-tions and are located respectively at the opposite edges of the projections and have a portion thereof in the plane of the top ot' the projeetions to provide a continuous elevated bed.
1.0. A character printing strip holder having;` a row of projections thereon, said projections being arranged in pairs and being disconnected troni the holder to provide overliaingingl portions` the portionsl intermediate the pairs ot' projections being arranged to provide longitudinal elevated bede` above the plane oi the plate holder. and a printingV strip adapted to overlie said projections and having inwardly iianged sides adapted to extend beneath said overhaneinpr portions.
1l. The ooinbination of a printing,T strip holder having a body part with a plurality ot' engaging' members thereon. eaeh nieniher including a central part raised above the plane ot' the body portion. and two oppositeiy disposed engaging portions.v the portion of the holder internnaliate said ventral portions being raised into the plane ol .said portions whereby a eont-inuous supportingt panel is provided, and an impression stri p adapted to overlie the elevated bed and beingl seeured to the engaging' nienibers.
ln testimony whereof, l hereunto aiiix in v signature.
BURNIE J. CRAIG.
