Be it known that-I, ANDREW P. TRUCK- snss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a specification. l
The herein described device relates' to signs, and more particularly to electrically lighted signs in which the various letters comprising the same are removable.
One of the objects ofthis vinvention is to provide a sign which is simplein construction, practical in use and readily and easily arranged to contain one or a number of letters or figures, being so constructed, and to enable anyone to remove or adjust the various letters, and being reliable in use as well as convenient in operation.
A further object is to providela device also so constructed as to prevent rain or snow from entering into the rear of theletters, and also of such construction that the contacts provided assist in maintaining the letters-in position, which, in connection with other features to be brought out, makes the letter compartment rattle proof. v
lVhilethe foregoing explains the general purpose and objects of the device, other objects portions and general assemblage of the vsev-- be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing. any of its advantages, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of a sign constructed after my idea showing an adjusted letter, and also adjusted blanks.
Figure 2 is a front view of a portion of a sign showing the openings, and also showing arrangement of the wiresl eral parts may 7 7, Figure 1.
rlower extremity.
Figure?) is a side viewy in section ofthe sign; i f.
Figure 4 is a detail view showing the electric contacts.
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the box containing letter.
Figure 6 is a view ofthe inside of the box showing multiple wiring. f
Figure 7 is a view in section of the line Coming to the precise details yz--th'e vice consists of the hollow structure 8 having a series of openings 93 which form. in their construction a lip 11 on each side thereof, and a shelf 11' inside the frame atthe lAt the topmost portion and inside the frame there is maintained a run of'wires 16 and a series ofy contacts 13 on a rblock 12. A hollowv box like member j 9 maintaining a letter or other embellish- 'ment 9 with a lip 10which lits in and on the lip 11 and the outer lower edge extending below the back portion and forming a lip lOjwhich rests upon the shelf 11. At the topmost portion of the hollow member bearing a letter'is maintained a contact plate 14, while inside the letter bearing member there are secured multiplewired plates 15 to engage with the lamp sockets. When the hollow letter bearing member is about to be inserted in place, it becomes apparent that it provides a feature new, and now described. Instead of being compelled to hold down the contact, lthe member 9 is inserted into the opening in the frame at lits topmost point and pressing against the conta-ct, andthe lower extremity allowed to drop into the lower portion of the opening and rest on the c shelf, and the pressureof the contact at the top assists in maintaining the letter in position, which, together with the lips at the sides, as already described, makes for a water proof, dust proof and rattle proof sign.
It is to be understood that when the box bearing the letter appears the opening 93 which can be closed by the insertion of the blank 9 which is also used for the division of words.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,`is:-
In combination, a sign comprising a frame with front and rear walls, an opening in the front wall, a lip on the inside of the front wall neary the side edge of each opening and dei has been removed, there a lip near the lower edge of the opening, a box like letter form, a 'flange at the side and the bottom edges on the front wall of the said letter form engaging the aforesaid lips in the frame, conductor wires along the top Wall on the inner side of the frame conf nected with downward extending resilient contacts, other contacts on the upper surface of the lettery forms cooperating with the in aforesaid resilient contacts, lamps arranged on the front face of the letter arranged to forin the outline ot a letter and electrically` connected with the aforesaid contacts.
ln testimony wneieot I alix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
