Vith the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a new and improved book holder constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view thereof;

Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Referring more particularly to the drawl ings, the reference character 11 designates a substantially triangular bracket, and one side of said triangular bracket is extended beyond its adjacent side as indicated by the reference character 12. The side which carries the extension 12 is secured to the adja- Carried by. one.` off the'y sides `of the triangular -member 11 is-v a clamp. consisting.l of two members. 17, slidably mounted'withglrespect tothe plate 18,.wliich plateis secured vPa orfrlqcas' to the triangularbracketas .at 19.j Carried by thetriangularbracket isra r-ifglitand vleft-hand.screw-threaded member 20 mounted in a bea-ringmember 21 and having screwthreaded engagement.` with the'clamp meinbers 17 as designated by the reference.charac-l ber is squared as at 23 in order that it may -ter 22. yOne en d of thisscrew-threaded membe engaged with a key to 'rotate the sameto t move the clamp members 17 toward and away from each other. The clamp members 17 are covered with rubber or the like 24, to prevent their scratching or marring the the article to Awhich the device is attached.

The reference character 25 ydesignates a rod, one -end of which is provided with a right-angular extension 26 adapted to engage in one of the openings 14 of the trian- The opposite end of the rod 32 isflat as indicated by the reference character 33, and provided with an o ening through which a Screw, bolt, or the li re, 34 passes, said screw, bolt or the like receiving a wing nut 35. This screw or bolt 34 is carried by av plate 36, and said plate 36 is provided with flanges 37 and 38.

Mounted on the plate and extending there- 3 over are two arms 39, said arms being mounted on a bolt 40, which is surrounded by a. spring 41 pressing upwardly against the arms 39, said arms `beingretained in place by means of a nut 42. vBy tightening or loosening this nut 42,1the tension of the spring 4]. may be varied at will.

The deviceuoperates in the following manner: The clamping members 17 are engaged with an article of furniture, as, for example, a chair, bed, or the like, andthe member`20 is rotated so that the clamp members are" j 110 caused to firmly grip the article of furniture to which the device is attached. After the los device has been positioned, the book, maga- I 20 A book vsupport comprising in combinal l zine, or the like, is placed uponl the plate 36 andthe arms 39 are engaged therewithv to holdthe book or magazine in openposition.

From the 'foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides a book holder in which various adjustments may be `inade in order vvthat the kproper positioning of the book relative tothe reader may be had.

tion, an attaching means in the form of a clamp,A a substantially triangular bracket carried by said clamp, said bracket having a plurality ofopenings in one of its Walls and a projecting Wall provided With a plurality of serrations, an arm adapted vto be received in one of said serrations, said arm having a right-angular extension adapted to be received in one of the openings of the Wall of the bracket, a vertically disposed arnoA dependent roln the free end of said first-mentioned arm andfprovided with a plurality of openings, a rigid arrn carried bysaid vertical'arrn and adapted to be secured in one of saidopenings, and a book-supporting ineinber carriedfon the last-mentioned arm and adjustably secured thereto in a horizontal plane. l v
