PRINTERS CHASE.
Application led 'March 24, 1922. Serial No. M6339.` v
To aZZ whom t may concern,
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. EVANS, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident frame.
of. Butte, in the county of Silverboiv. and State of .ll/lontana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Chases, f which the following is a specification. l l
VMy. invention'relates to printers chases and the purpose of my invention is the provision of a chase by means, of which a type forml can be quickly andv accurately centered Within the chase Withoutthe necessity of measuring, and in such manner that vthe number f picas of furniture necessary to confine the form in centered position will be automatically indicated.
I will describe one form of chase embodying my invention and will then pointent the novel features thereof in claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
VFigure 1 is a view showing in top plan'one form 'of chase embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-v-2 of Figure 1.
Referrin specifically to the drawin in which simi ar reference characters re er to similar parts, my invention in its present embodiment comprises a metallic frame F of rectangular outline, which is the usual construction of chase.- Along the side/and end inner edges of the frame, graduations indicated at G are provided which are .numbered and so arranged as -to forni a.
plurality of linear and printers scales as indicated at S, with two scales along each transverse and longitudinal edge of the The graduations of each scale are arranged to define the distance in inches and picas, .with the numerals of any pair of scales progressively increasing in denomination from the corner of the frame to a point medial of the corners. In the present instance the picas are indicated in multiples of three, although it is to be understood that every pica may be designated or any multiple thereof. rhe common terminal of the scales along-each sidca'nd end of the frame is indicated by the heavy line designated at L, and each line L defines the medial point along the ends or sides 0f the frame so that tivo lines drawn from the lines L so as to intersect each other at right :ingles will define the exact center of the frame at the point where thc lines intersect.
In practice, the type vforni is adjusted within the chase anni the inch 01'? picas graduations appearing ati the opposite sides. are the' same and those at the opposite end-s are the same. For example, take a type @0 form f l picas long and 24 picas wide. The form is adjusted until the numberL of picas at eachside of the form is'l22, and the number of picas appearing at the end of the s@ mf form isl8. When the type forms are positioned it is. accurately centeredwith respect tothe chase, thus eliminating the meas# uring operation which would be necessary with all chases heretofore proposed.
The n umber of picas appearing at the op-y posite sides or ends of the type form indicate the number of pieces' of furniture to be placed in the chase for confining the type `form in centered position', so that' by ap? Plyng the necessary number of pieces :m/75 Subsequently applying the quoins, the type form. can be secured in accurately centered position Within the chase.
, Although I have herein shown and de-` l scribed only one form o f printers chase enibodying my invention, itis to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made herein Without departing from the spirit of the' invention or the spirit and scope` of theappended claims.
What I claim is:
LA printers chase comprising rigidly4` connected together pairs of spaced parallel longitudinal members and spacedl parallel transverse members at the ends of the longitudinal members and having a printers scale extending on one longitudinal member adjacent to an inner ed e thereof and having a Vprinters scale exten ing on the corresponding face of a transverse member of the chase adjacent to the inner edge of the transverse member, each of, said printers scales comp rising pica markings increasing progressively in denomination from the ends of the chase member on which provided to the mi) transverse median line thereof, whereby the positions of type forms of various sizes when in centered relation to the chase and the number of picas of furniture required to secure the type forms in centered relation to the chase may be accurately determined.
2. A printers clse' comprising rigidly connected together pairsof spaced parallel .longitudinal members and spaced parallel transverse members at the ends of the lon 110 gitudinal members and having a printers scale extending on one longitudinal niember adjacent to an inner edge thereof and having a printers seule extending on the corresponding face of a, transverse member of the chase adjacent t0 the inner edge of the transverse member',A en eh of said printers scales comprising picav markings increasing progressivey in denomination from the ends of the chase member on whichf provided to the transverse median line thereof, said transverse median line being clearly indicated by a marking coincident therewith, wherebyl the positions of'type forms of various sizes when in centered relation to the 'ehase and the number of picaslef firniture required to secure the type forms' ientered relation to the chase may be aeeurately determined.
8.,A printers chase comprising rigidly connected together pairs of spaced parallel longitudinal mambers 'and spaced parallel temete transverse members having a printers scale v extending along the inner edge thereof from the plane of the inner edge of one longitudinal member to the plane ofthe inner edge of the other longitudinal members, each of said printers scales comprising pica merKings' increasing progressively in denomination from the ends of the scale to the transverse median line thereof, whereby the scales will indicate the number of picas of furniture required to lock type forms of various sizes in centered relation to the chase.
