IMPROVEMENT IN BACK-BAND HOOKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,606, dated March 17, 1874; application filed March 5, 1873.

To all whom fit may concern Be it known that I, Josrnn B. GATnRrGI-IT, of the city of Louisville, State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in BackBand Hooks, of that class that are adjustable; and I hereby declare that the following is a correct specification of the same, reference being' had-to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable hook for back-bands, which shall be simpler in construction-hence cheaperand less liable to be broken than those cast ones heretofore in use.

It will be seen by reference to Figure 1 in the drawings, that I have devised a method or plan of construction and a simplicity7 ofform that enable me to construct a combined hooky and buckle suitable for back-bands, by simply bending two wires into suitable shape, and connecting' them together, as seen in the drawings Fig. 1. The tenacity of the wire gives a stronger hook than the same weight of cast metal, and experience has shown that articles ot' this class can be made cheaper of bent wire than by casting.

The forms heretofore used for combined hook and buckle for back-bands do not admit of their being constructed of bent wire alone, as they have three parallel bars for the buckle part, the center one being for the tongues, (see Fig. 3,) and the two outer ones being loops. I have, therefore, devised the simpler form or pattern seen in Fig. l, in which I have dispensed with the lower parallel bar, (see Fig. 3,) which formed a loop to hold down the lower or loose end of the back-band, and have so shaped and arranged the supporting-arms ofthe hook an d the point of the hook that they will perform this function equally well.

In addition to the advantage referred to, the passing of the back-band end immediately under the point of the hook, without having a metal bar intervening, will keep the link of the trace in the hook more certainly than heretofore.

By reference. to Fig. 3 the form heretofore in use may be seen. It will be seen that to pass the link into the hook a space must be left between bar O and the point of the hook.

This arrangement sometimes allows the link to escape ,from the hook; but in my invention the leather passes immediately under the point of the hook after being bent over bar B, hence presses constantly outward against the point of the hook, and is sufficient to prevent the escape of the link, at the same time the leather will yield readily enough to allow the link to be forced in. The hook-point may come so near to B that the link cannot be putin the hook while the leather is between bar B and the hook. In this case the leather end should not be put under the hook until the link has been putin the hook, and when put in, then it eifectually prevents the link from escaping.

Though leather back-bands only have been mentioned above, the hook and buckle described are just as well adapted to web asto leather.

rIhe form seen in Fig. 2 maybe used for leather, and the bar B may be of wire, like A, and clamped around A, as seen; or it may be a casting, with eyes for the wire A to pass through. The wire A may be continuous instead of open above, and its points may meet together in the hook.

I would remark that in constructing the hook herein described, the hook may be turned under.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv

I. A combined hook and buckle for backbands, constructed of wire bent into shape, substantially as shown and described.

2. As an article of manufacture, a combined hook and buckle for back-bands and other similar uses, in which the arms which support the hook, and the point of the hook perform the function of loop for the lower or loose end of the band without the additional bar, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
