UNITED STATES PATENT @FFMIE.
CHARLES R. BIRD SEY, OF HINSDALE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO-UNITED STATES GYPSUM COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
PLASTER LATH.
Application filed August 25, 1920. Serial No. 405,924.
To all whom it may concern:
a. citizen of the United States, residing at Hinsdale, in the county of Du Page and- State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Plaster Lath, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that general class of devices knownas laths and relates particularly to a plaster board key lath. The invention has among its objects the production of a plaster board or key lath of the kind described that is simple, convenient, durable, efficient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable. Among its further objects is the production of an article of the kind described which may be easily, efficiently and satisfactorily handled, shipped and applied- Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown.
and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out-in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference.
' ter, plaster Paris, or other plastic material.
One face of the board is preferably straight or flat. while at the opposite face-there are formed a series of ribs or ridges and corrugations, so that when the board is applied to studding or the like, plaster may be aplied and will be retained in place by engaging the lath member. The side upon which the sheet 1 is shown is smooth or flat or straight, and at the other side is the corrugated sheet 2. In the completed board shown, the sheet 2 extends inwardly as at 4, and thence under at 27, and thence across the bottom to the other side of the corrugation as at 6 and-thence over the other rib of Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. Blnnsn'r,
plaster. owever, the board is preferably -made with a substantial layer of plaster at the bottom 6 of the corrugation, with the sides of the corrugationas at 7 preferably brought in close to or contacting with the sheet 1. In constructing the board I prefer to interpose tension members 8 of wire or equivalent material, which is substantially non-expansible or non-shrinkable. The
board substantially consists in a series of paster laths enclosed to protect the same and prevent disintegration, which are connected by a plaster body, but there being substantially hinges formed at the points 7, so that in shipping or storing or handling the board the same may be flexed or rolled, for example', as indicated in Figure 3. This not only facilitates shipping and handling, but also afi'ords protection to the board at these times, as all except the outer layer is enelosed and protected, and even the outer layer of the roll is supported by the inner part of the roll. This construction makes it possible to ship the boards in strips of considerable length, so that when the lath is to be applied, it may be cut at the job to flust the desired length, thereby avoiding pieclng as well as saving labor.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my lnventlon; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a lath of the kind described and in combination, a cover sheet, a corrugated sheet arranged thereover with a plaster body arranged therebetween, the corrugated sheet substantially contacting with the first sheet at each side of the bottom of the corrugations whereby the two sheets substantially form a series of hinges at different points, with a body'of plaster between the hinge points. a
2. In a lath of the kind described and in combination, a cover sheet, a corrugated sheet arranged there'over with a plaster body therebetween. said corrugated sheet substantially contacting from edge to ed e with the first sheet at spaced points where y the two sheets substantially form a series of N 'at the different points.
3. In a lath of the kind described and in combination, a cover sheet, a corrugated sheet arranged thereover with a plaster body therebetween, said corrugated sheet. substantially contacting from edge to edge with the first sheet at spaced points ,wherebythe two sheets substantially form a series of hinges at the different points, and tension members extended between the two sheets.
L. A corrugated plaster board of the kind described compiisihg a plaster body having cover sheets of fibrous material adhering thereto, the width of the corrugations at the bottom being greater than the width at the top, there being'asubstantial body of plaster throughout the board except adjacent the edges of the corrugations atxthe bottom thereofwhereby the board may be terposed between the sheets. J
5. A plaster lath board of the kind described comprising'aplaster body having cover sheets on opposite sides thereof, the cover'sheets being substantially brought-together at different points whereby the board may be flexed at said points without fracture.
hinges, combination, cover sheets, and a plaster body;
6. In a lath of the kind described and in arranged therebetween, one of said sheets being corrugated from edgeto edge with the depth of the corrugations substantially equal to the thickness of the board, there beingv a substantial body of plaster between the sheets except at the edges of the corrugations whereby the board may be flexed without fracture.
8; board of the kind described com prising a plaster body, interposed between cover sheets, one sheet being corrugated into the body tosubstantially the face of I the other sheet, and a wire reinforcement in- In .-'testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
