HASQZQfi T. HANSEL WOMANS UNION SUIT Filed July 5. 1923 Safe-mm;
fatented Apr. 1, 1924.
TILLIE HAN'SEL, O-F CEN'TR-ALIA, WASHINGTON.
WOMAN S UNION SUIT.
Application filed July 3, 1923.- Serial No. 649,359.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIE HANSEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centralia, in the county of Lewis and State 6 of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVomens Union Suits, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to an improve- 10 ment in undergarments and it is an object thereof to provide an improved garment de signed especially to be worn under a corset, though it is not necessarily limited to such use. It is a matter of common knowledge that where a union suit is worn under a corset it becomes wrinkled and the overlapping parts at the rear are often doubled or folded in such a manner as to be very uncomfortable and almost impossible for the wearer to straighten, especially where long hip corsets are worn. I have therefore designed a garment which I call the ladys comfort union suit and in which it becomes a very easy and simple matter to straighten out wrinkles and folds, even under a corset.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is an elevation showing my device in use,
Figure 2, a similar figure showing my device in use where a corset is worn over the suit, and
Figure 8, a view illustrating one position of an edge of the suit.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates a union suit having a posterior opening closed by overlapping flaps the edges of which are indicated at 11 and 12. To enable anyone, and particularly the wearer, to straighten the rear parts of the garment I attach a pair of tapes 13 and 1e thereto. Each tape is secured at its front end to the side of the suit as at 15 and at its rear end to the extreme edge of the opposite overlapping portion. The tape marked 14 has an opening provided for it at 16 where it passes through the outer flap, this opening being protected by taping, button hole stitching or other conventional or desirable means.
It will be evident that the overlapping flaps can readily be pulled into place and that this can be done by the wearer even when encumbered by a corset. In Figure 2 I have illustrated the latter condition, the
corset 17 covering a large part of the union suit and making it inconvenient to get at and almost impossible to straighten. By making the tapes long enough to hang down at the sides well below the bottom of the corset I insure convenience in this respect and make it certain that they can be reached, after which the parts can be drawn into shape as illustrated.
Figure 3 illustrates a position often assumed by parts of a union suit, which renders the wearer nervous and irritable, by reason of the resulting miserable discomfort, and may cause chafing or be otherwise painful.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a union suit having a posterior opening and overlapping flaps extending downward from substantially the waist line of the garment to cover said opening, tapes each having one end secured to the free edge of a flap below the hip line of the garment and secured at its other end to the side of the garment at a distance from the opposite side of said opening, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Denver, Colorado this 20th day of June, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-three.
'IILLIE HANSEL.
Witnesses:
Mrs. PER. OLSSON, RICHARD G. SELKE.
