improved means for pressing some at least of the tumblers into operative position to render the lock more eHicient.

The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a section of a lock embodying the invent-ion, the tumblers and the spring for shifting them being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section. Fig. 3 vis a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of the spring.

A casing 9 is adapted to rotatably hold a cylinder or carrier 8 which may be connected to operate a lock in any suitable or well {nown manner.

The carrier` is provided with a slot 10 in which a series of plate tumblers 11 are mounted so they may slide transversely to Ibring their ends into the usual locking slot in the casing, as Well understood in the art.

Each tumbler is formed with a. key slot 12 and with lugs or terminals 15 adapted to enter one of the locking slots in the casing 9 to lock the cylinder, and .when held in correct position by the key 13 to clear the casing and release the carrier for rotation.

Notches 16 are formed in one of the side margins of the plate tumblers 11 andthe shoulders 17 at the ends of the slots are adapted to be engaged by a spring for normally pressing the tumbler into operative position. The improved spring for performing this function is formed of suitable wire and comprises coils 18 and 19 which have their outer terminals integrally connected, as at 20, and their inner terminals extended toform oppositely extending arms 21 and 22 to press the tumblers engaged thereby in opposite directions. For example, arm 21 will exert pressure upon the upper ends of the tumblers near the front of the carrier and press them upwardly while the arm 22 will engage a number of the tumblers adjacent the back of the carrier and press them downwardly. W hen a key of the proper shape 1s inserted, it. will operate the tumblers gainst the force of the spring-arms 21 and` The invention exemplifies a plate tumbler lock with means by which a single spring serves to operate different tumblers'in opposite directions to render the lock efficient 1n use.

The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modiedl within the scope of the appended claims, Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a rotatable carrier, plate tumblers slidable transversely in the carrier, and having, one side notched to form opposing shoulders, and a spring comprising a helical coil adjacent the notched side and longitudinal arms extending in opposite directions from the coil to engage different tumblers and press them in opposite directions.

2. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a rotatable carrier. plate tumblers slidable transversely in the carrier and having one side notched tp form opposing shoulders, and a spring comprising a plurality of helical coils adjacent the notched side of the tumblers and arms extending longitudinally in opposite directions to engage the shoulders of different tumblers and press them in opposite directions.

3. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a rotatable carrier having a pocket in one side thereof. plate tumblers slidable transversely in the carrier and provided with shoulders at one side, and a spring adjacent one side of the tumblers, provided with means for pressing some of the tumblers outwardly and comprising a coil held in said pocket.

4. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a rotatable carrier having a pocket in one of its sides, plate tumblers slidable transversely in the carrier and provided with shoulders at one side, and a spring adjacent one side of the tumblers, extending longitudinally of the carrier, provided with means engaging the shoulders for pressing some of the tumblers outwardly, and comprising a. plurality of coilsheld in said pocket.

5. In a cylinder lock, the combination of -a rota-table carrier having a pocket in one of its sides; plate tumbleis slidaible transversel `in the carrier and provided with shoul ers at one side, and a spring adjacent extending longitudinally 0i the ozu'i'ier andv engaging shoqllders on different tumblers to press them outwardly in opposite direotions.
