INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE Filed Aug. 20. 1919 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENJI m5: 4479b lyiziwjwffi wi ated by a valve tappet 20, a cam 21 and a cam shaft 22. The cam shaft is driven from the crank shaft of the engine (not shown) by suitable gears.
' Each cylinder is provided vvith a pair of inlet valves '23 and 2%, each carried in a suitable guide 25 and having a valve stem 26 actuated by a tappet 27. Lengthwise of the top of the motor, is located a cam shaft 28 provided with cams 29 which act on the respective valve tappets 27. The cam shaft 28 is carried in a housing 30 forming part of the removable head 14 of the engine. The cam shaft is driven by a train of gears 31, 32; 33 and 34, the last being located on the exhaust loam shaft 22. It will be understood that any suitable means for driving the two cam shafts in time with each other andwith the crank shaft may be employed.
At 35 isshovvn a spark lug which, as
will be .seen, is located at a out the center I otthe combustion space, being between the aeeaeer pairs of valves and substantially equidistant from the valves of each pair, said spark plug being also quite close to theinlet valveso that the progressof combustion will be substantially uniform in all directions. lit will alsobe seen that the spark plug is Well cooled by the vvater spaces 37 and 38.,
What we claim is 2- An internal combustion engine the cylinders of which have a removable head and having exhaust valves in pockets at the sides of the cylinders and operated by a camshaft below the cylinders, and inverted inlet valves over the cylinders, operated by mushroom valve tappets and a camshaft above thecylinders, the said inverted valves and valve tappets being guided in a housing integral With/and mounted on said removable head and containing the camshaft and "the inlet passages.
