SUPPORT FOR SIGNS.
Application lefl March 14, 1923. Serial No. 625,085.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, NEWELL R. Tnirr and EUGENE R. PINET, citizens of the United States, residing at Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Signs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to supports for signs, and more particularly to supports for a rotatable sign.
An object of the invention is the provision of a support for a sign board adapted to be arranged opposite a road, or at any desired point, which will permit the sign to swing similar to a weather vane, whereby it will offer less resistance to the wind and is less likely to be blown down during storms.
A further object is to provide a support in which the sign will normally assume the positionbest adapted for display.
In the accompanying drawings, we have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sign board showing the invention applied,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a horizontalvsectional view on line 3 3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view on line 4 4 of Figure l, and,
Figure 5 is aperspective view of a lower supporting bracket.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a post or other similar support upon which the sign is mounted. The sign board 2 is provided with an enlarged portion 3, having an opening therein through which the post or support is adapted to pass, whereby the sign board is rotatably mounted on the post. Upper and lower brackets are arranged on the sign board and form supports therefor. The construction of each of the brackets is substantially the same, and reference will be had to Figure 5 of the drawings, where the detail construction of the lower bracket is shown. As shown, each bracket is provided with a bearing portion 4, for the reception of a supporting post. These bearing portions are provided with openings 5 through which the post is adapted to pass. The upper face of the bracket is provided with a pair of spaced parallel ribs `@formingl a groove '.1' which is adapted to receive the edge of the sign board. 'Ihesign board is retained in this groove by means of bolts 8. It will be apparent that the provision of the brackets with the bearing portions 4 furnishes a more substantial support for the sign board. The lower bracket is provided with a pair of depending ears 9 having openings therein for the reception of a pin 10. This pin is adapted to rotatably support a roller 11. A member 12 is mounted on the post beneath this roller, vbeing secured to the post by screws 13. The upper surface of this member is provided withv a cam track 14, upon which the roller is adapted to ride.
The operation of the device will bev apparent from the foregoing description. When a heavy wind is blowing, the sign is rotated by the force of the wind, similar to a weather vane, so as to present an edge to the wind and thus offer less resistance. This reduces the possibility of the sign being blown down to a minimum. Normally, the roller 11 will rest upon the low point of the cam and retain the sign in the position shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. In assembling the sign opposite a road or at any other point, the cam is adjusted to normally arrange the sign at the desired angle. The member 12 may be rotated on the supporting post before the set screws are tightened, so fthat the low point of the cam will be in the desired position to normally retain the sign at the-best angle for displaying advertising matter or the like. y
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the sc ope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
In a sign support, a post adapted to pass through a sign to be supported, upper and lower brackets rotatably mounted on said posts, each of said brackets being provided with grooves to receive the upper and lower edges of the sign, the lower bracket being provided with a pair of depending ears, a roller mountedin said ears, and a member arranged on seid post beneath said lower bracket, said member being provided with a cam track to receive said roller.
In testimony whereof, we affix our signatures 1n presence of two witnesses.
