UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' VALENTINE LAPHAM, OF MARION, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,060, dated April 21, 1874; application filed February 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALENTINE LAPIIAM, of Marion, in the county of Marion and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolts for Fastening Fish-Plates, &c.; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a bolt constructed of two longitudinal tapering sections, each section provided with a head having a slot for the passage of the end of the other section, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and usethe same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is a side view of my bolt before the ends of the sections are clinched together. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the bolt, showing the sections clinched. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detailed views of one'of the sections.
AA represent the two sections of which my bolt is composed, each section being at one end provided with a head, B. Each section tapers from its head to the point, and they may be either half-round, oval, square, or other suitable shape, so that when put together they form a key. Through the head B of each section, at the base of the inclined or tapering side, is a hole, a, for the insertion of the point I) of the other section.
This double-headed bolt may be used for fastening plates on railroad-rails, machines of any kind, or any other places where it may be applied.
After the two sections have been inserted in the place where wanted, and driven tightly together, the points I) b of the two sections are bent or clinched on the outside of the heads B B.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A double-headed bolt made in two sections. each section providedwith a slotted head, and tapering from the head to the point, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of January, 1874.
