Cordele, in the county'of Crisp and State. of Georgia, have invented new and useful.

Improvements in Funnel Strainers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates'to strainers and has for its object the provision of a novel straining device designed for insertion within a funnel whereby to strain all liquids poured into the funnel, the device being of such formation that it will fit snugly within the funnel and make a liquid tight joint therewith.

An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is provided with a permanent screen and which is also provided with means whereby a straining cloth may be detachably associated therewith.

An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, efficient and durable in use, and a general improvement in the art.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view of a funnel showing my device associated therewith,

Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the funnel and through my device and Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of my strainer removed.

Referring more particularly to the drawings the letter A designates a funnel of ordinary construction in connection with which my device is used. In carrying out my invention I provide anouter ring member 10 which is provided at one edge with an inwardly extending flange 11 and at its other edge with an outwardly extending flange 12. Seating upon the flange 11 is a wire screen 13 held in place by an inward 1y extending flange 14 on an inner ring member 15 which is provided at its upper edge with an outwardly extending flange 16 spaced slightly from the flange 12. The outer and inner ring members may be screwed together or they may be simply pressed together frictional engagement With ea h h r The numeral 17 designates a circular gasket of rubber or the like which is clamped between the flanges 12 and 16 and which is'designed to engage against the inside of the funnel A for making a li id ig joint. v

ilt, is frequently f desirablegito provide other straining .means in addition to the wire screen 13 and to accomplish this "I make use of a ring 18 which is slidably engaged upon the} outer ring or shell 10 and which operates to clamp in position a piece of fabric 19 which extends across and covers the underside of the wire screen. By this construction it will be seen that the ring 18 may be easily removed to effect replacement of the fabric when the latter becomes clogged with sediment. In use, the device is inserted. within the funnel and is then pressed downwardly so that the gasket 17 will bear firmly against the side of the funnel for making a liquid tight joint. Any liquid poured into the funnel must then necessarily pass through the wire screen and through the piece of fabric, if the latter is used, before the liquid can escape from the funnel into the receptacle provided for catching it. When the screen itself becomes clogged the device may be readily removed from the funnel and inverted under a spigot from which water is flowing to effect cleaning. The fabric is readily removable as above mentioned.

From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive strainer which may be used in conjunction with any ordinary funnel and which will be highly advantageous for effecting straining liquids of any kind.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to Vmake such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus described my invention I claim:

1. A strainer attachment for funnels comprising a shell like body member, a straining medium in the bottom thereof and a circular resilient gasket at the top thereof adapted to snugly engage the funnel for.
