Application filed masneo,*1923; "serial-no. seas-57.

Y T at? whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM BQMOCARTY,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Lavelle, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvement in Air- Draft Attachments for Chimneys, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to chimney attachments for effectively creating an air draft therein for assisting in the up flow of the smoke and gases within the chimney.

A furtherobject of my invention is the provision of such an attachment that is extremely simple of construction, the same being readily adapted for attachment to and detachment from the upper ends of chimneys for effectively creating an air draft therein, for the above ascribed purposes.

The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings,

the invention residing in the construction,.

combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.

In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figures 1 and 2 are front and side elevational views respectively of an attachment constructed in accordance with this invention, the same being shown as positioned upon a chimney.

Figure 3 is a vertical transverse cross sectional view of my chimney attachment and taken upon the line 33 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a. perspective view of the air controlled damper constituting apart of the inyiention shown in Figures 1 to 8 inclusive, an

Figure 5 is a vertical longitudinal cross sectional view of a slightly modified form of attachment.

WVith particular reference to the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 4: inclusive, the same constitutes the provision of an angular shaped hood or cap- 5, the top wall of which is formed with an opening 6, this opening being surrounded by a vertically extending angular neck 7, the same being formed integrally upon the said top wall of the hood or cap 5. The upper end of this neck 7 is formed with relatively larger -"V"sliaped cuts 8 upon the 'fi'ont and rear wallsther'eof, and loosely, pivotally mounted within the neck '7, adja' cent the upper end thereof is a damper Plate 92 I This damper plate 9 may be and preferably isof a form as shown in Figure 4, and is of such a length as to have the upper end thereof project externally of said neck 7.. The upper opposite sides of the damper plate 9 is formed with reversely bent curved wings 10 for purposes herein- 7 after described, and in View of this description, it will at once be apparent that when my attachment is positioned upon a chimney A and the wind is blowing in the direction of the arrows shown in Figure 3, the damper plate will be swun'g upon its pivot to a position as per this figure. A slight vacuum will be resultant between the projecting end of the damper and the adjacent portion of the neck 7 will consequently draw in the smoke and gases upwardly within the chimneyA, whereby the same will pass outwardly through the adjacent cut out portion 8 in said neck 7. The wings 10 upon the projecting upper end of this damper are for thepurpose of controlling the movement of the same upon its pivot when the Wind is blowing in a direction at right angles to said damper. I

The form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive is adapted for attachment to square or angular shaped chimneys, and in the modification,Figure 5, the hood or cap 5' is rounded as is also the neck 7 In this form of the invention, the end of the damper 9 within the neck 7' is pointed as shown for allowing the free pivotal movement of the damper within said neck.

In View of the above description, it is believed by methat the advantages and operation of a chimney attachment constructed in accordance with this invention will be readily appreciated by those skilled in having a vertically disposed hollow neck I A chimney attachment comprising a hood mounted uponvits top and at theicenter" thereofl the neck: being provided at I its upper end and at opposite sides/with recesses leading in from the upper end of the neck, a rod disposed transversely across the interior of the neck and spaced below the lower edges of the recesses and parallel with the side walls of theneck provided with the recesses, a damper plate having intermediate vcurved portions bowed in opposite directions and disposed around the sidesof the rod and loosely mounted thereneck and the upper portion of the plate extending above the upper edges .01. the neck, that portion'of the plate which projects above the neck being provided atits opposite end with curved extensions disposed in opposite directions from the plate, saidextensions being spaced above the upper edges of theneck and disposed toward the side walls of the neck having the recesses, and the center of gravity of the plate being disposed above the rod.

In testimony WhereotI afiix my signature.

WILLIAM B. MOCARTY.
