To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CONRAD RosINE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements, in a Pad Holder for Telephone Transmitters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a base support for a telephone transmitter stand.

It is an object of this invention to provide such a base support that is adapted for housing a. pad and pencil that may be read ily withdrawn or projected therefrom as desired.

It is also an object of this invention to provide such a pad and pencil holder that can be automatically projected by a simple unlocking operation.

lVith these and other objects in View which will become more apparent in the following description and disclosure, this invention comprises the novel mechanism and combinations hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claim. 7

1n referring now to the drawings which illustrate one embodiment of this invention, it will be observed that this invention broadly comprises a hollow member forming part of a telephone transmitter stand, and having a lateral opening through which a pad holder may be ejected when it is desired for recording telephone addresses, calls or other data, the pad holder being Serial No. 547,841.

preferably normally held within the hollow member against an ejecting force by some appropriate means which may be released to allow the ejecting force to eject the pad holder through the lateral opening when desired. It should however be understood that the ejecting force and holding means may be omitted and the pad holder manually withdrawn if desired.

The illustrated form of this invention comprises preferably a hollow cylindrical member which may be variously constructed. In the present instance, the cylindrical member consists of a circular plate 1 having an annular peripheral vertical flange 2 of suitable height and a circular plate 3 having a. downwardly projecting annular flange 4 which telescopes over the flange 2 and terminates short of the bottom thereof for the purpose of allowing space for a band or ring 5 which surrounds the flange 2 and holds the upper margin of a tufted fabric 6 covering the bottom of the hollow cylindrical member.

The circumferential flanges 2 and 4 are cut away upon a suitable arc to provide the lateral opening 7 through which a pad holder sustained within the cylindrical member may be swung or ejected.

The pad holder comprises preferably a substantially sector shaped plate 8 having an outer arcuateflange 9 of a curvature similar to the curvature of the cylindrical member and of a height such that the flange 9 will completely close the lateral opening when the pad holder is sustained within the cylindrical member. The interior edges of the plate 8 are provided with retaining flanges 10,v 11 and 12 for holding a pad and pencil on the plate 8. Spaced from the flange 10 and the aligned portion of the flange 11, are tongues 13 and 13 struck up from the plate 8 for retaining a pencil 14 against the flange l0 and aligned portion of flange 11 and the pad against the flange 12, the metal between said flanges being cut away to facilitate the removal of the pencil from its position by allowing one to readily gras the same with the fingers. Likewise the ange 11 is cut away intermediate its ends and a hole 15 is provided in theplate 8 adjacent the cutaway portion of flange 11 whereby the fingers may be readily inserted through the hole 15 for removing the pad 16 which is (lzonfined between the tongues 13 and flange Adjacent one end of the arcuate flange 9, a U-shaped bearing clip 17 is secured upon the plate 8 to provide a bearing for a pivot pin 18 which extends through apertures in said clip, the ends of said pivot pin being secured in the base 1 and top 3 of the casing. A coil spring 19 is anchored to the bottom of the cylindrical. member at one end at a point 20 adjacent the opening 7, the opposite end of said spring being'anchored toa sustaining lip 21. integral with :the U- shaped bearing clip 17 the lip 21 riding over'the bottom of the casing to form a support for the pad holder. The aperture 7 is spaced slightly from the bottom of the casing and the pad holder is provided with a stop 22 projecting from the bottom thereof and adapted to contact the flange 2 below the aperture 7 for limiting the outward swinging movement of the pad holder.

As the pad holder is positioned some distance above the bottom of the cylindrical member, a plurality of sustaining lugs such as 23 and 24 shown in dotted lines in Figure 4, are preferably struck up from the bottom of the cylindrical member over which the bottom of the pad holder is adapted to ride.

A leaf spring 28sis secured uponthe bottom of the base support or cylindrical member and exerts an 11 ward pressure against the outer arm of t e latch 25 for keeping the same in engagement with thepad holder.

The cylindrical member is adapted to form a base for a telephone transmitter stand which ma therewith or ma e separate therefrom. In the resent instance in which a separate mem er is illustrated, the same is provided with an upper marginal resilient lip or flange 29 upon one side and a 'resilientresite sides of the be integrally combined taining tongue 30 upon the other side between which the transmitter stand is adapted to be retained.

In the use of a telephone transmitter stand involving this invention, the pad and encil which are housed within the cylin rical membermay be readily brought into service by pressing upon the button of the latch lever whereby the pad holder is released therefrom and automatically ejected or swung outwardly by the sprin 19 so that the same may be used to record an address or any other data. I claim as my invention: 7 A base support for a telephone transmitter stand, comprising ing .an opening in its side wall spaced slightly above its bottom, a pad holder pivoted in said member and spaced from its bottom to swing through said opening, a

spring disposed in said member beneath said holder and connected to the two upon oppoivot of the holder so as completely to pro]ect said holder from said member, lugs struck from the bottom of said member to sustain said holder spaced from the bottom of said member, a stop lug on a hollow member havsaid holder adapted to engage the side wall of said member beneath said holder when said holder is projected completely, and a latch extending through member and engaging said holder for retaining the same in said member.
