' Appncanon fried may 2,
To cllwhomjz'ii may concern:
Be. it known that` I, ROBERT I. MoNAUGH- TON, a citizenof the United States, residing at Iron Mountain, in the county of ,Dickinson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holder Brackets, of ywhich thel follow-r ing is a specification.k v 3 :This invention relates. tof bag holder bracket, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of vdevices of this char-v acter.
With these andother objects in view, the invention consists fincertain novel features of construction as hereinafter. shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment ofthe invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevatiomof the improved device. j l i j Fig. 3V is a front' elevation, enlarged, of one of the supporting brackets.
Fig. 4 is a side view of themember shown in Fig. 8, partly in section.
Fig. 5 isa section `on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrow.`
The improved deviceincludes a standard formed ofja tubular lower portion 1() and an upper portion 11, which may also. be
j tubular, and slidable inthe lowerportion and held in adjusted position bya setscrew `12 or the like. The tubular standard portion is stepped in a foot member 13 and the latter in turnattached to a 'base' plate 14. The member 14 is extended in .alldirections from the base 13 and provided vat each side with a carrier wheel 15 located at the rear of the platform as shown. The platform is turned downwardly at its front side as at 15@l and then extended forwardas at 16 in a'plane parallel with the platform and in alinement with the lowest point of the wheels, so that the bottom of the extended portion 16 rests upon the: ground ortloor and, while acting as a third leg to support'the device also constitutes a bagfrest as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. i y
A bail like member 17 `is attached byfits ends to the sides of the member 14 at its front, asshown, to provide afurther supf port'for the 'lower portion of the bag.
' By this means, the improved device may 192e. semaine. 636,215,
may be of wood, andattached to fthe head` member yat each end, is a bracket device,
buts-as thebracket devices are alike, the
description of one will suffice for both.
Each bracket device is formed with a vertical portion 19 and a horizontal portion 20, the portion 20 having a-depending lip 21 bearing over the upper edge of the mem` ber 1S, `and the portion 19 perforated to receive a rivet or the like 22 by which it is secured to the member 18.
The members 19 and 20 are coupled by` a brace web '23, and the horizontal portion 1s provided at its rear with a guideway or housing 24 having a polygonal shaped passage 242L extending longitudinally therethrough. The opposed side walls of this passage have formed therein recesses 25, and injeach recess is secured, at one end, a spring' 26 curved and adapted to project outwardly into the passage, in opposed relation to the spring in the opposite recess.`
The bag supporting portion of the device kcomprises a metal rod having the side legs 27 and 28 and curved connecting portion 29. The legs 27 and 28 extend in parallel relation and are of the same size as, and are slidab'ly received respectively in, the passages 24a of t-he housing 24, as 'shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, and frictionally engaged by the springs 26.
The upper faces of the portions 20 constitute rests for the sides 28 of the U-shaped bag holding member, and eoact with the guide members 24 to relieve the bag support largely from downwardl strain under the weight of the loaded bag.
The springs will be of sutlicient strength to hold the bag supporting members against accidental displacement, or from normal strains to which they will be subjected when holding the bag in filling position, but will yield to abnormal strainsto enable the holder to be adjusted to it different sized bags, or to be removed altogether.
By forming` a standard in the two sections, telescopically united, the holder members 27, 28 and 29, may be adjusted vertically to suit bags of different heights.
The improved device issimple in conalso be of metal if desired.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specifica-tion, but it will be understood that modifications Within the scope of the claim may be made in the construction Without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages,
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is z- A bracket for the purpose set forth comprising, a substantially elongated relatively Wide, flat horizontal portion, a vertical portion depending from the under side and adjacent one end thereof, a reinforcing Web eX- tending longitudinally of the center ofand connectingthe back of said vertical portion with the under face of the rear of said horizontal portion, means to provide an integral longitudinally extending housing upon the rear of said horizontal portion, having a polygonal longitudinally extending passage therethrough open at each end, said housing further having the inner side Walls provided with opposed recesses, and a spring secured at one end in each recess and having a curved portion normally projecting into said passage to engage and securely grip the sides of a member extending through the passage.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signa ture hereto.
ROBERT I. MCNAUGHTON.
