UNITED STATES PATENT' `orFFio-E.
'WILLIAM JANNELL, OF'WEST PARK, OHO, ASSIGNOR '10 THE DOMESTIC ELECTIICl COMPANY, OF CLEVELANDVOHIO, A CORPORATIONLOF OHIO.
FIBER-camente Macifrinn.
Application filed March 28, Serial No. 456,146,
Be it known that l, ViLLL-iii JANNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at YWest Park, .in the county of Cuyahoga and State of hio, have invented a certain new and usefulImprovement in Fiber-Crimping Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing-s.
My invention relates more particularly to a machine designed to form up pieces of inaterial from a continuous strip for the purpose of using them as an insulating material in the openings or slots of a field or armature, into which the wires are wound. This invention is more particularly concerned with small electric motors designed for do inestic purposes. The armatures of these .motors must. be made very cheaply. They are generally laminated and the result is that in large production some slight burr islilrely to be left on the edges and the separate laminations are likely to Abe somewhat disaligned, so that if theinsulated wire were wound directly upon the armature-,the result would be that the delicate insulation would be broken, since a small and delicate wire -mustbe employed. It is therefore vimportant that a cheap and effective insulating and protecting means be inserted to form a protection for the wires. And it is a special object of this invention, therefore, to provide for the rapid and cheap production of such an insulating means. The material best adapted for such use is a fibrous material. which is of a stilfand springy nature.
lVhei-e the -material to be operated upon is either of a delicate or of a stiff nature, it is found to be difficult in .prior machines to properly feed it to the forming mechanism. An object of my invention is to provide a machine in which the material, whatever-its grade, shall be positively guided and held in position throughout its travel through the machine.
Another object of 4my invention is to provide a machine attaining the above objects, which feeds the material intern'iittently so as to allow it to be properly formed and to be cut into pieces of the desired length.
Another object of my .invention is to provide a machine of this .kind to which the amount `of material fed and 4the length of the strip cut, maybe easily varied vwithout interfering with the correct operationA of the mechanism.
lOther obJects of the invention will be apparent in the course of the following description, and the `features of novelty will be` pointed out in the claims.
lnvthe drawings in which a machine eni- 'bodying thel principles 'of my Iinvention is illustrated, Fig. lisa top plan view of the machine, some parts being broken away and shown in section; Fig. 2 is aside view of the machine; Fig'. 3 is an end view taken from the right of Fig. 2; Fig. Ll is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is any end view 'taken from theI left of Fig. 1 Fig. 6 is a driven so `as to feed the-strip of material between the .die members when they are open and the cutter C is actuated Whilethe die members are closedy and serves to cut 'o a predeterniined length of material after it has been shaped yup in the die. Adjusting' means are provided for changing the amount of feed lof the rollsand consequently vthe .length of the strip cut yoff at each operation of the cutter. y
Referring more particularly to :the drawings and to lthe different `partsby numerals;`
thefraine 10 carries the bifurcated standards 11 which are adapted to receivea spool or core 15, carrying wound thereon the roll lt .of fibrous material and support-the vroll This frame and the rot-.itively thereon. standards may be independent of the framework of the main -machine or may be a part thereof as desired. The fiaiiie`caii.ies stems 12 on Whichware mounted the holding' blades rFliese stems 12 may extend through suitable bosses on the standards 11 andare adapted to be adjusted therein towards and from eachother and to be clamped inr such 7 adjusted positions by suitable means such as the set-screws 14. rlhe blades 13, when i properly adj usted therefor, serve to hold roll R from sliding` on its shaft and guide'the strp as it is wouiidoif of the roll.
The machine proper comprisesa frainef20 having 'suitable standards thereon for supporting the various shafts and dies. They will'now be described; ,f
The forming rollers A comprise the lo-wer roller which has a grooved or troughed the 'shaft' 33 isjournaled above this shaft i lin blocks 34 .which may be slidably mounti ao,
i and the amount ofthe corresponding stepy ed in ,the rbifurcated upper `end ofthis standard, the springs 35 bearingontlie closure plates '35 and on the blocks respectively, serving to hold the rolls in tight vvbut-yieldable Contact in a well-knownv man-V ner. I
` 1n order to provide a positivevdrivebetween the shafts, l show the spur gear 3G which is pinned on the shaft 32, in mesh with the spur gear 36- pinned on the shaft These `gears are designed yto provide approximately the same-peripheral speed on "each of the wheels 30, 31.
1n ,order to provide for an intermittent feed for these wheels, l have shown a spring release ball clutch which comprises the inner memberk 37 pinned to the shaft 32 and the member 40 which is rotatably mounted about this shaft andy about the member 37.' y.One end of a link 41 is pivotally secured to vthe member 40 by a stud 40a, the other end of `this link being fpivoted to thethirdclass lever 42, having its fulcrum at 43.
The lever 42 has a slot 47 formed therein and adapted 'to receive a crank pin 4G'and bushing. The drive shaft 44, which is journaled in suitable Standards von the frame,
has at one end a guideway 45, in which is they crank pin 46 slidably mounted for radial motion relative to the shaft. The vscrew 43' which is threaded in an upstanding flange on the guide 45, and serves to adgust `the position of the crank pin, and a lock-r ino nut 43 lmay be provided to hold the .b v pm in its ad'iusted position',
lt lwill be seen that by changing the posirtion of the crank pinl 46 on the guide 45, .the motion of the lever 42 corresponding to a revolution ofthe shaft 44, may be. varied kby step rotation of the rolls 30 and31 will be varied accordingly. 'f
Inorder to properly guide the strip of y material between the rolls 30 and 31, I provide a guide member whichv may be attached by suitable means such as screws to members 49 extending transversely from the standards l21 of the frame 20.
The lower face of member 50 has a rib formed therein complementary to a V- vshaped channel in the member 51 see Fic:
3, reference character' This rib is pro` giessively widened towards the end closest to the paper roll R. At this endthe V is completely flattended out vas shown at 52 in Fig. 3. `Adjacent the edges .of the V `iib member 50 has the side flanges 55, and
groove 56 therebetween and the strip S of fibrous material isitherefore positively Aguided in this groove, and formed up into a trough as the strip approaches the rolls, so that thel strip is positively vguided and held in form throughout the length of the member 50. These faces flatten" out to form a-straight slot 52 and the end of the guide members 50, 51, farthest from thel rolls 30, 31, as above stated. It should be noticed that the vertical wall of member `50 vin which the member 51'flts, forms'a positive guide for the edges of the strip of material as it' is fed to the rolls and positively prevents its disalignment.
Adjacent the rolls 30 and bers 50 and 51 extend between the ends of the cross pieces 49 and into close proximity with the rolls. The construction rand 'slightly separated so as to leave a guide 31, the mem- Y operation` of these members are clearlyk illustrated in vFigs. 3 and 6. If desired the,
members 49 vand 50` may be readily made f v of an integralcasting. e e
As the material passes through therolls 30 and 31, it is further formed upto eormounted on the supports 22 of the frame.
yThis die member has one end extending out of this groove and into close proximity with the rolls as clearlyshown in Figs. 2k and G. Suitable set` screws 53 threaded in the bed' 70 may -be employed to firmly hold the die in position in the groove. lThe die v61 has' a V-shaped trough 72 formed with sides which are progressively steeper away y from the rolls.
In order to `properly hold the strip of material in this trough, suitable spring strips 62 are provided which may be mounted by means of a set screw 63 on the bed 70. These strips extend along the bottom of the groove, one of themfproj-ectingtowards vthe rolls and the other away from the rolls.
of the strip underneath it. As the strip rThe end of the strip adjacent e ythe rolls is bent upward-to insure guiding,
@mez-53e progresses along the guide trough, vits Amiddle portion is held downwardV into thevcenv` ter of the groove. y i
Overlying a portion of this female die' 6l is the male die 64 which isadapted to be moved into 'and out of the groove of the member 61. This dievis carried on a block 65 which may 'conveniently be madeto eX- tend approximately throughout the llen-gtl'i of the bed 70, but the die 6e; itself extends only along a portion of this block as 'seen in Fig. 2. So that strictly speaking only the left hand portion of member 6l constitutes a female die, while the rest of these members performs merely the function of a guiding trough.
Adjacent the die 64,the spring member '62 is bent up so as to prevent catching of the strip on the spring as the strip slides out from under the spring.
The block 65 on which the die is carried is pivoted on a lever y66. This connection 'may be preferably affected by means of thepin which passes through a boss on the end of the lever and through the elongated registering slots 7l in the 'ears `on the upper end of the. block 65. This loose pivotedl connection allows the malel die G4 to `properly fit into the groove of the female die (il as the male die is forced down by the lever.
In order to actuate the lever 66,` a steel'insert 68 is provided tlie1'eon,'wliich `rides upon a cam 69 mounted on the shaft 80 which is `iournaled in suitable bearings on the frame. The lever maybe suitablypivoted as shown at 67, between standards Q3 of the frame. In order to hold thelever in contact with this cam, I haveprovided a tension spring 81 suitably attached at one end to the lever and at its other end tothe frame.
A Ul
The form of the Cam should be such 'as to allow the maleI die to be held down into the fen'lale die for as longtime as isfpossible without interfering with the feed of the strip so thatl the male `die G4 will rise just before the feeding action begins, and will again be forced down after the feeding ceases. f
lVithin the bed 70 suitable heating means may be provided such 'as the electric 'coil 82 vextending through thelength of the bed,
having one end covered by means of la suitable plate 75, vwhile the Otlrervend may be suitably closed by a plate 'on the coil member. the strip therein to 'cause the stripto be formed and given a final set into the troughshaped form shown in 7.
1t will be seen from the form ofthe cam (S9 that the male die '64 is held in raised position during a portion of the rotation of the cam and is then drawn down `fby the spring into the clamping position. The cani S9 is adapted to operate in such rela- This coil serves to heat the die an-d.
tion withlthe feed ofthe roll mechanism A that th'e male'die will be in upper position -while thefeed is Ataking place so as'to allow position inthe lower the electric heating coil 82, which'ma'y be inserted in a suitable `opening '73 in theblock 70. This coil may be connected to a suitable vSource of current by means of the 'lead wires 74. y
Adjacent `theien'dioff the die a knife` blade 83 is located7 said blade beingr carried :ona'
levery 84 pivotedy on a support 85 extending from and suitablyattached to the bed 52. This leverconstitut'es ya lever of the (first class, having its fulcrum at 86. jMounted lon this lever is :a hardened steel insert 87 adapted to ri'de upon the ycam 88 carriedon shaft 80. A spring 489 attached at one Aend to `the'l'ever and at its other 'end to suitably `attaching means on the frame, serves to hold theleve'r in contact-with the cam B8. l y
Thisfcam is form'ed'fs'o as to allow the Uspring 89 to hold the knife infupperjpositijon during the greater `part offthe rotation 'of shaft 80. Ithas a portion 'extending Voutward somewhat abruptly therefrom to cause end ofthe leverfa 'spring t9() i-s attached, a y
4suitable stud "91I being provided on the lever to form 'a meansof attachment for the fend ofthe spring. The other end lof -this yspring is lattached by means of the screw 93 to the bed 70.' This spring insures that the knife shall belheld in operative relation against the shearing-edge of the die 51, as thelni fe -makes its downward cutting stroke, or
l'lO
against a lsuit-able cuttingblock which may be carried by the die 5l. i' The formation `of la `cam which .has been described, causes a sudden blow-5to be struck so that the knife shearsvthe fibre with .-ac'lean cut. The form of the product Pthus produced is shown in `Tn lorder to taire up the shock or vibration which might occur :up-on the return of the lknife lto upper position by means of the 'spring 89, I have shown vthe end of the lever 84 turned downward `as at 94 and drive tlregmachgine suitable j machine.
' the end is brought down under the plate 50 The shaft L4 also carries the crank pin i guide 15 in which the crank pin 46 is slidably mounted scribed. l The operation of the machine is as followsz. c
. Thev strip of material to be operated upon is placed in position in the standards y11 and as has been previously de and mayv then be fed. into the rolls vA. Power' may be supplied to the machine by means of the pulley 99 and this. will cause ra rotationof the shaft 14: and an oscillation of thev lever 12, which lby means of the link 41 will cause oscillation of therotary member 40. The member .37 which is pinned on the shaft .32 can receiverotation from the ymember in one direct-ion lonly so that fthe shaft 32 is given an intermittent step bystep rotation in av counterclockwise direction as seen in Fig. 2.
The meshed spur gears 35 andv 3G serve tocommunicate vmotion from shaft 32 to the shaft `33, which therefore revolves in a clockwise direction asseen in Fig. 2, so that the forming rolls L30 and `31 which are pinned respectively on these shafts have a similar intermittent rotation, and will feed the st-rip intermittently through the rolls. When the strip extends outward to the left of theV rolls A in Fig. 2, the spring members G2, will serve to hold the middle portion of the strip in positionin the channel of the die G1.
As additional portions of the strip are fed through'the rolls, the strip will soon extend outward to such an extent as to occupy the whole of the channel of the die 61.
The coil 82 within the bed servestoheat the die and the strip therein, and on account of the reciprocating motion of the die 64 the end of the strip which lies underneath this die will be clamped between the dies and.
given a permanent set. The action of the cam 69 with relation to the feeding motion y is such that the'die is held in upward position while the strip is being fed forward and is held downward during'the .time when no feeding action is'taking place.
The cam S8 whichy operates the knife 83 is so arranged as to cause the cutting stroke of this knife'to take place while the die (3l/1 the frame 20v of 'the -wide limits without in any way interfering` is in down or clamping position so that a clean cut of the strip is secured because the portion adjacent the knifeis held Afirmly in position by means of the two dies 61 and 64. Aportion of the strip is therefore cut oil', which is of theform shown in Fig. 7
As the strip progresses from the original roll R to the forming rolls A, the guide members 50 and 51 serve topolsitively guide it throughout its course so, that thefstrip always correctly fed to the rolls.
As the strip passes out from the rolls,'.it y
is'received by the guide'membersv 61 and G2 wliichserve to positively and accurately l guide the strip to the dies so that the stripis positively held in proper position throughout its course through themachinc.
i These guides havey the progressively formed faces so that there is no abrupt change in the form ofl the strip at any point; instead it is gradually and naturally formed into its final shape. It is given its final set, however, by the action of the die members,
which are preferably heated. The final product P produced is shown in Fig. 7.
It will be apparent that if it is desired to alter the length of the strip it is only necessary to change the position 'of the crank pin 16 in its slide 45 so vas to vary the length of stroke of leverv 42 and-consequently to vary the corresponding rotation of the rolls so, si.
During the feeding operation of the machine, the guide blades 13 which extend along the side of the roll R serve to hold the roll and the material thereon in proper alignment so as to feed the strip correctly to the guides 50, 51 and to the machine.
Itwill be apparent from the foregoing description that I have. provided a device in which the vmaterial to be formed is positively` andcorrectly fed to the different operating mechanisms and in which the material is gra'dualy and naturally formed up into the desired shape, as it progresses to and vthrough the various mechanisms.
It will also be seen that 'I have provided a machine in which the length of the product produced may be readily varied within with the proper operation of the machine. The arrangement ofthe knife and its coordination with the operation'of the die `insures a clean cut of the material.
It vwill also be seen that` the machine is simple in constructionl and operation and may be cheaply manufactured, whileat the same time, it is capable of forming the product at a rapid rate. 1 y
