Description
IFR MITCHELL DICE Filed Sept., l0, 1925 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL mrcnnLL, or HAMPTON nomas, ummm.
DICE.
Application led September 10, 1923. Serial- No. 661,826.
To all lwhom t may cci/noem:
Be it known that I, PAUL MITCHELL, citizen of the United States, residing at Hampton Roads, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dice, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to games and toys and has particular reference to an improved form of playing dice.
The primary object of the invention is to provide dice that may roll freely in asmall space, a desirable feature in connection with devices of this kind.
Another object of the invention is tov provide dice whlch may be readily identified wth respect to the number which turns up when they come to rest.
A further object of the invention is to provide the numbers of the dice in such manner that they lie flush with the surfaces ofthe latter and provide no crevices or sockets in which disease germs may collect, collection of dirt being also prevented and the dice being readily cleaned.
lVith the Yabove general objects in view, the invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters .indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views: l
Flgure l 1s a perspective view of one form of dice constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 of a modified form of the invention, and
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 of a still further modification of the invention.
Playing dice are usually constructed of solid cubes with the corners thereof rounded or bevelled, and the edgesof the same pointed, thus resenting a device which will not roll yreadi y within a small space. In the several views, the cube is indicated by the reference character 5, and in order to make the same roll freely at all times within a small space,`I bevel or ehamfer not only the corners ofthe dice but also the edges thereof asindicated at 6 and 7 respectively.
Prior dice of which I am familiar have had the numbers placed u on the faces thereof by placingas many ots upon each face as there are units within the number upon said faces, these dots or indicators as at 8 with respect to the form of the invention shown in Figure 1 and they have been previously formed by providing circular sockets or depressions in the dice faces and then coloring the same a different color from that of the cube 5 from which the dice is formed. These sockets collect dirt and germs upon continued use, and besides being hard toy clean and a menace to the health of the players using thesame. In accordance with the present invention, the sockets are filled flush with the faces of the dice so as to leave no depressions in which dirt and germs may collect.
As shown in Figure 5, the numbers are provided in this form of dice in the nature of roman numerals as at 9, and in the form of the invention shown in Figure 3, the numerals are provided as at 10 in the form of arabic numerals. 'With these latter forms of the invention, the numerals are also provided so as to lie flush with the faces of the dice, and arabic or roman numerals are preferably employed in lieu `of Athe dots 8 of Figure l, because more easy 'and expeditious identiiication of the numerals may be had.
` It will thus be seen that I have provided dice which are not only artistic but-'elficient in use, but which aredevo'f of the many objections noted above which are found with 'respect to prior dice of this kind.
Minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
" What I claim as new is:
A playing .die comprising a` cube having arbitrary symbols upon its faces, all of the corners of said cube being chamfered from end to end to provide beveled merging surfaces of uniform ywidth to facilitate rolling of the die upon a surface, the faces of the aforesaid/fs mbols being flush with the corresponding aces of the cube to assist in the free rolling of the die.
In testimony whereof I affix -my signature.
PAUL MITCHELL.
