BESILIENT PROTECTOR FOR HEELS ANDSOLES.

Application filed February 26, 1924. Serial No. 695,180.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM JAMns RussnLL ALLAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Waverley, near Sydney, in the State of New South Wales and Commonwealth of Australia, have invented a new and useful Improved Resilient Protector for Heels and Soles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to protectors for attaching or afiixing to the soles and heels of boots, shoes and the like and consists in constructing thyqwlflmwfl flf any other suitab e resilient or compressible material in dished or conveXb-concave formation, with or without an inward screw head depression or recess in the crown, in order that the cushioning effect thereof to the feet of the wearer will be increased thus resulting in greater comfort and resilience than has been obtainable with resilient protectors as hitherto constructed and in order that the durability of the protector will be prolonged thus reducing the cost, and in combining a protector with a heel or toe or sole piece.

And in order that the invent-ion and a practical application thereof will be readily understood the same will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a. diametrical sectional elevation of the improved resilient protector,

Figure 2 is a reversed plan of the same,

Figure 8 is a diametrical sectional elevation of a heel piece combined with a protector,

Figure 4 is a reversed plan of the same, and

Figure 5 is a plan of a boot sole and heel with protectors and heel piece applied thereto.

The protector 6 is conveXo-concave preferably .ith splayed edge or rim 7 has an inward depression or recess 8 in the crown for reception of the head of the screw 10 by which the protector is secured to the sole or heel and to ensure that the protector will not be flattened by the crown being drawn by said screw to the sole or heel in the affixing, and has internal reinforcing and distancing ribs or heads 9 which prevent the protector being wholly flattened by weight thereon and thus ensure ready release from a surface whereon the protector contacts and is pressed as in walking.

The protector 6 may be combined with a heel member 11 formed of the same mater al to the plan shape of the boot, etc. heel and with a recess 12 of slightly greater diameter than the protector to receive the latter and allow for limited expansion therein. In the manufacture the heel member and protector are moulded together with a narrow junction of the material at opposite sides so that after the protector has worn at the rear of the heel said junctions may be severed and thus allow the protector to be revolved so that an unworn portion thereof will be presented to the rear of the heel.

In afiixing the protector to a sole or heel a washer of suitable material and shape may be inserted in the recess 8 and a screw is inserted through the washer and the bottom of said recess 8 into said sole or heel.

In use as the protector contacts with the surface walked upon air is imprisoned under the protector and as weight flattens it such air is compressed and some escapes thus increasing the cushioning effect, the internal "lbs 9 preventing total flattening of the protector and raising the edge or rim thereof as soon as weight is relieved thus breaking any suction or gripping effect and ensuring ready release of the protector from said surface.

I claim 1. A resilient protector for the soles of shoes, comprising a concavo-convex member of flexible material having a concentric depression extending inwardly from its convex side and provided on its concave side with symmetrically disposed means for preventing contact of said side with the shoe sole.

2. A resilient protector for the soles of shoes comprising a concavo-convex member of flexible material having a concentric depression extending inwardly from its convex side and provided on its concave side with symmetrically disposed ribs integral therewith for preventing contact of said side with the shoe sole.
