To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CECIL B. RUsKaY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of. Far 'Rockaway, county of Queens, cit-y and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Ash Trays, of which the following is a specification.

- This invention relates to improvements in ash trays, it being a primary ob eet of the invention to provide a device by means of which cigar and cigarette ashes and stumps and sticks of burnt matches may be conveniently disposed of into a normally closed chamber to prevent disagreeable odors and to hide those articles from sight. It is a further object of the invention to provide a convenient operating mechanism for dlsposal of the articles referred to and to so construct the parts that it will have apleasing appearance. Further objects will appear as the description proceeds.

' Referring to the form of invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I have shown a base member 1 with an upstanding pedestal 2 carrying at its upper'end the receptacle 4 in the form of a box or casing and provided preferably with a sliding drawer 5 adapted to receive the discarded ends of cigars, cigarettes, and the ashes therefrom, burned matches and any other waste material incident to smokin An opening 6 is provided in the top. of t e receptacle. Beneath this opening is a channelled member 7 formed with a bottom 8, held spaced from the opening 6 by means of the side members 9. This channelled member forms the bottom of a temporary ash receiving chamber 10, the vertical sides of the chamber being formed by means of the slide member 11 which has -metallic and may be formed of zinc or cop- 10 whereby the longitudinal sides 12 slidable with respect to and adjacent the sides 9 of the channel member. The longitudinal members 12 are connected by three cross members 13, 14 and 15, any two of which are adapted to form the other two sides of the chamber 10. An operating member in the form of a projection 16 is preferably secured to the central c'ross'member 14 and projects from the opening 6 sufficiently to allow convenient manipulation thereof. The end members 13 and 15 are so proportioned as to just fill the open ends of the channel 7 when fitted in said openings. The'movable member 11 may be termed a discharging element in that the central cross piece 14 thereof is movable from one end of the channel member 7 to the other end thereof. The cross pieces 13, 14.and 15' are spaced apart approximately the length of the opening 10 so that when the central cross member 14 is at one end of the opening one of the cross pieces 13 or 15 has closed the ppening at the other end of the channel member 7.

There is preferably provided in the bottom of the drawer 5 a non-inflammable lining 17 so that any live ashes or matches which may be deposited therein will not set fire to the receptacle. The lining 17 is preferably per or any desired material. The end of the drawer 5 is cut away as shown at 20 so as to clear the parts forming the ash chamber the drawer may be removed from the receptacle. I have shown a match box receiving member 18 and a cigar or cigarette holder 19 conveniently placed on the top of the receptacle. It is obvious that other articles may be placed about the receptacle as cigarette cases and the like. 7 From the above description it will be seen that ashes and the like may be deposited in the chamber 10 and Whenever desired the slide member 11 may be moved longitudinally of the channel member 7 by means of the handle 16 whereby the cross piece 14 will rake the matter deposited in the chamber over' to one side of the channel member and drop it into the lined portion of thedrawer member 5. The depending end members 28 may be provided so as to restrict the opening 27 allowing the bottom section 25 to be spaced further from the opening 29 of the automobile. The discharging member shown generally at 30 is provided with end members 31 and 32, either of which is adapted to just closethe open-- ings 27 When the central or rake member 33 is at the end of its path of movement adjacent the ends of the opening 29. The cross pieces'31, 32 and 33 are preferably spaced by means of the vertical side members 34. The moving element 30 is provided with a convenient operating handle preferably in the form of an upstanding actuating projection 35 extended above the foot board 22 so as to facilitate the operation of the ash disposing parts. Rods 36 may be placed longitudinally of the ash chamber 37 extended along the sides of the upstanding projection 35 of the central rake member 33. A rectangular bracket is preferably mounted on the top of the foot board to protect the edges of the opening 29.

If desired an outer receptacle can be placed around and beneath the parts above described so as to receive the discharge therefrom, although this is not considered necessary as the refuse can be allowed to fall directly on the ground beneath the automobile.

The operation of this form of the invention is the same as in the first form shown in that the ash or other refuse is dropped into the chamber 37 where is rests upon the bottom member 25. When it is desired to dispose of the refuse the rake member 33 is moved longitudinally of the channel member 24 so as to force the refuse out through one of the openings 27 dependent upon which direction the rake member is moved, one of the cross pieces 31 or 32 closing the opening 27 when the cross piece 33 is at the end of its movement.

While I have shown and described a particular construction of the elements embodying my invention it. is to be understood that changes may be made therein and that the disclosure is intended as merely illustrative of my invention. My invention is limited only as set forth in the following claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. In a device of the character described, a receptacle having an opening therein, a chamber with closed bottom and open ends depending below said opening and carried by saidreceptacle, a discharging member enclosed by the receptacle 'and movable along said bottom and including cross- .pieces of substantially the same cross-sectional area as said open ends, and a member tom and open ends mounted on said receptacle and depending therefrom below said opening, a discharging element in said pocket-forming member, the discharging element comprisingvertically arranged side members and a plurality of cross members extended between said side members, an operating element pro'ecting through said opening and connecte to the discharging element for the purpose described.

3. In a device of the character described, a receptacle provided with an opening therein, a channel member secured to said receptacle and depending therefrom below said opening, said channel member having openings at both ends thereof, a discharging element movably mounted in said channel member and provided with cross-pieces adapted to closethe openings in said channel member, and having an operating element extending through said opening and movable from one side to the other thereof for the purpose described.

In a device of the character described, a receptacle provided with an opening therein, a channel member secured to said receptacle and depending therefrom below said opening, said channel member having openings atboth ends thereof, a discharglng element movably mounted in said channel memher and provided. with three vertically ar ranged cross-pieces spaced the distance between the openings in said channel member and of substantially the same cross-sectional area as said openings, and an operating element rigidly connected to one of said crosspieces and projecting through said opening.

5. In combination in an ash tray, a receptacle having an opening therein, a channel member mounted below the opening, said channel member having a fixed bottom section and. being open at its ends, a discharging element movable along said bottom section and provided with a plurality of closures so spaced that when a closure of said discharging element closes one of said openings, a second closure will occupy the other opening, said discharging element having an operating member projecting through said opening, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
