Each of these pins is held in position by the engagement of the spring or keeper 24: with a groove 2& formed around the respective pin and each is out half way through as at 28 on a level with the bolt 20. Furthermore, each pin has extending through its top, a slot wherein slides a looking pin 28 held in set position so that one end of the other projects outwardly by a screw 28. Now, with one end of the locking pin projecting outwardly the pins, when turned to bring that end against the upper shoulder of its opening 12, will allow movement of the bolt through the gap 28" while, when turned to bring the pin in its opposite direction a locking efiect will be produced. By setting the parts 28 in proper position it will be seen that certain of the indicia will have to be turned upside down to per mit movement of the bolt. Consequently, any one or more of these locking elements may be set so as to require certain of the pins 26 to be turned in one direction and the remainder in the other. For instance, referring to Fig. 10, it will be seen that when the pins are turned in one position, they allow free movement of the bolt while, in any other position, they look the bolt. As for instance, the pins in that figure lettered 26 lock the bolt, while the pins 26 are in position to let the bolt move. These pins can be so adjusted by means presently to be described that any particular number of pins may be used for controlling the combination. That is to say, the indicia in any certain number of pins may be turned to known position to effect release of the bolt. For instance, all of the indexes, which are here shown as letters of the alphabet for convenience in distinguishing from the reference characters, may be required to be placed in upright position except, say, C, G and M, which may be arranged to be inverted to release the bolt. Now under these circumstances, unless this entire combination is effected, the bolt cannot move. I The device has many applications, as for instance', it may be used for a door bolt being mounted on a swinging door of the ordinary type, such as is indicated at 30, the door closing against the jamb 31, and the bolt being provided with a keeper 32 of ordinary construction.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A base plate having a longitudinal channel extending therealong, a liner seated in said channel and having a similar longitudinal channel, a' cover plate extending over said liner, said liner, base plate and cover plate being secured together to form a longitudinal slot, a locking bolt slidable in said slot, said base plate, liner and cover plate being provided with aligned openings, said openings being arranged to lie with their centers on the edges of the longitudinal slot, the bolt having semi-circular recesses spaced to conform to said openings, cylindrical pins extending through said openings and cutawav diametrically opposite said bolt, heads on said pins having combination indicia thereon, and means to hold said pins in said openings.
2. A base plate having a longitudinal channel extending therealong, a liner seated in said channel and having a similar longitudinal channel, a cover plate extending over said liner, said liner, base plate and cover plate being secured together to form a longitudinal slot, a locking bolt slidable in said slot, said base plate, liner and cover plate being provided with aligned openings, said openings being arranged to lie with their centers on the edges of the longitudinal slot, the bolt having semi-circular recesses spaced to conform to said openings, cylindrical pins extending through said openings and cutaway diametrically opposite said bolt, heads on said pins having combination indicia thereon, means to hold said pins in said openings, other pins extending centrally through said base plate, liner, cover and bolt, the bolt being provided with slotted openings terminating in circular openings to accommodate the last mentioned pins.
3- A base plate having a longitudinal channel extending therealong, a liner seated in said channel and having a similar longitudinal channel, a cover plate extending over said liner, said liner, base plate and cover plate being secured together to form a longitudinal slot, a locking bolt slidable in said slot, said base plate, liner and cover plate being provided with alined openings, said openings being arranged to lie with their centers on the edges of the longitudinal slot, the bolt having semi-circular rccesses spaced to conform to said openings, cylindrical pins extending through said openings and cutaway diametrically opposite said bolt, heads on said pins having combination indicia thereon, means to hold said pins in said openings, said cover plate being provided with a pair of longitudinal grooves, and keepers located in said grooves and holding said pins.
4. A base plate having a longitudinal channel extending therealong, a liner seated in said channel and having a similar longitudinal channel, a cover plate extending over said liner, said liner, base plate and cover plate being secured together to form a longitudinal slot, a locking bolt slidable in said slot, said base plate, liner and cover plate being provided with aligned openings, said openings being arranged to lie with their centers on the edges of the longitudi nal slot, the bolt having semi-circular recesses spaced to conform to said openings, cylindrical pins extending through said openings and cutaway diametrically opposite said bolt, heads on said pins having combination indicia thereon, means to hold said pins in said openings, said cover plate being provided with a pair of longitudinal grooves, other pins extending centrally through said base plate, liner, cover and bolt, the bolt being provided With slotted openings terminating in circular openings to accommodate the last mentioned pins, and keepers located in said grooves and securing said pins.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
