Applloationled Iaroh 17, 1923. Serial Ilo. 825,734.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURENCE J. BERKE- LEY, a citizen of the United States residing in the county of Milwaukee a fu clear, concise, and exact description', reference 4being had to the accompanying drawings, 'forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to systems for supplying compressed Huid, and more specifically to a unitary compressing and storing equipment, especially suitable for service in connection with stations supplying free air for blowing up or iniiating automobile tires, stone cutting establishments, boiler works, in short, wherever` simplicity, compaetness, and durability, are material 'factors in the service to be rendered by the device.
A complete unit for delivering compressed Huid, necessarily comprises a prime mover, a compressor, a storage receptacle, and the necessary control devices for governing the operations of the prime mover and com` pressor. Where two or. more separately mounted base plates are required to support dilerent parts of the complete equipment, the services of a competent construction engineer are necessary to instal 4the units. Especially, injunits of moderate capacity,
the expense of installation thus becomes an abnormally large portion of the 'total -exnse of the unit to the user, and'A in case 1t is desired to move the equipment, this additional expense must be incurred a Asecondtime.
I eliminate the disadvantages hereinabove set forth, by uniting allparts of the apparatus into a single unitary device, of such compactness and simplicity, that any 'one with suicient intelligence to stand` the unit right end up and shelter it from the weather can secure satisfactory service therefrom.
Further detailed obJects and advantageous lfeatures of construction of my'device'wwill become apparent as the description pro-Al ceeds.
In the Vaccompanying drawings: f v Figures- 1 and 2 are elevations of a' devic constructed according to my invention looking at the side and at the end of the unit respectively. 1
l Figlure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure an 4 I y Y Figure 4 is a plan view of the base, with the storage receptacle removed.
In the embodiment of my invention selected for illustration, the tank`l0` ienetions, not only as a receptacle for the compressed iuid, but as a column 4upon which all the other arts of the com lete equipment are supporte A base -or pe estal 12 is bolted to the bottom of the tank 10 as at 14, the
bolt passing through a central boss supported` by ribs 16. A peripheral pocket 18 v formed by a ledge 20 receives the lower end of tank 10 and coo crates :with bolt 14 to hold the parts toget er.l
A laterally pro'ecting shelf 22, forming an integral part o 1base12'carries upwardly projectinv lugs 24 to which a platform 26 1s pivoted carrying the prime 'mover 28 lwhich is illustrated as an electric motor.
Another shelf 30 has integrally formed dithe periphery of tank 10, and is clamped to the tank by a U-bolt 34 passing through suitable apertured bosses 36 at the ends of arms 32. Three vertical brace' rods 38 extend from lbase 12 up through shelf 30 to cooperate with .the clam ing U-bolt 34 and unite the shelf base, an tank into a rigid unitary structure.
An air compressor indicated as awliole by the reference character 40 and having an air intake 42 and a fly wheel 44 is mounted on shelf 30.- A belt 46 passes around ily wheel 44 and the ulle carried by the electric'motor 28. t wi l be ap arent that the weight of` motor 28 and atform or Ashelf 26 operates to automatically maintain -pin of motor 28,`and for this purpose, the
lea lines delivering electrical power to the motor extend from lthe governor downward thereto, being housed in a protecting pipe .verging arms 32 each embracing part ot 56. The outlet for the air is Vthrough the pressure regulating and control valve 50 which permits the pressure of the air to be set at a predeterminedvalue lower than the pressure in the tank 10. By turning the handle of the control valve to one control position, the reducing valve is by-passed and by throwing the handle to a third position, the air may be delivered to a special outlet, such as a tire filling hose as disclosed and claimed in the co-pending application of Burton S. Aikman, Serial No. 498,566, filed August 19, 1921. The unit herein shown is adapted to be employed for a farm pumping system of the faucet controlled pneumatic displacement type. Movement of the control handle to either abnormal position at once functions to operate the governor to start the compressor.
It will be seen that I have provided a selfcontained unitary device, which only needs to be stood right end up 'and connected to a source of electrical power and an air hose, to be in sha e for immediate service.
Without rther elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the gist of my invention, that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service, without eliminating certain features which may properly be said to constitute the essential items of novelty involved, which items are intended to be defined and Secured to me by the following claims.
