To 'all whom t may concern.' Y Be 1t known that I, EDWARD T. RANDALL,

a citizen of the United States, and aresident'y of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles andState of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercising Apparatus, of Vwhich the following is a specication.

My invention relates to and has for its purposey the provision of an exercising ap paratus of simple, inexpensice and durable construction by which various movements of the arms, legs and body can be effected,

allow the operator to perform exercises similar to those of rowing, and means for locking theseat against movement on the apparatus and in any adjusted position to permit the execution of other forms of exercises. i

It is also a purpose ofmy invention to provide an exercising apparatus in which the conventional form of lVhitley exerciser` can be employed, or exercisers ofthe coil sprixg type, the-invention being constructed to a low the use of either form of exerciser and to the accoodation of persons of various physical dimensions.

l will described only one form of exercising apparatus embodying my invention, and will then point out' the novel features thereof in claims.

Referrin specically to the drawin in which simi ar reference characters re er to similar parts, my invention in its present embodiment comprises a base frame of sub stantially rectangular outline and includin spaced parallel rails or beams 15 connecte adjacent their ends by tranverse rails 16. A tl-shaped yoke or frame 17 is secured in upstanding position upon the rails 15 by Vmeans of brackets 18, and the'platform 19 is arranged yin inclined position upon the rails 15, with triangular lblocks 2() arranged between the platform and the yoke 17 for rigidly supporting the platform in inclined position. This `platform includes a strip 21 secured to the lower edge thereof, which is designed to prevent downward displacement of the feet fromthe platform, as

will be understood, and the platform is formed at its Aupper edge with a recess 22 for a purpose which will be hereinafter described. Foot straps 23 are mounted on the platform in the manner shown and are adjustable to accommodate feet 'of dinderent s1zes. l

An, exercising device is shown as constitutingv a part of this apparatus, and this device .is'of the conventional Wthitley form of exerciser. This device includes an elasltic cable 24 trained about a pulley 25 adjustably connected to one of the transverse rails 16 by means of a chain 26 and a hook 27. The cable is also trained around a pair of pulleys 28 mounted in a bracket 29 secured to the other ,transverse rail 16. From these pulleys the cable extends upwardly and around a pair of pulleys 30 mounted on -a bracket'31 pivotally supported upon the upper end of the yoke 17 byrneans of a hook 32. The free ends of the cable which l extend rearwardly from the pulleys 3G are provided with hand grips 33, lt will be noted that the recess 22v of the platform 19 allows the extension of the cable upwardly through the the foot straps 23.

A seat 34 is supported on a tubular pedestal 35 secured toa base 36 which is movable longitudinally on the rails 15, and for vthis purpose the base is provided with rollers 37 (Figures l and 5) journaled in ears 33 secured within recesses 39 of the base, withfthe rollers having contact with the upper edge of the rails 15. These rollers receive the vertical load of the basey and seat, while rollers 40 are arranged to take care of the lateral thrust of the base, and these rollers engage the confronting sides of the rails 15 and are journaled in suitable brackets 41 secured to and depending from the underside of the base. These brackets l1 are provided with lips or flanges 42 which' move within grooves cl3 formed in the confronting sides of the rails 15, and by means of these danges engaging within soy platform and between lll) the grooves the base is secured. against upward displacement, 'while at the same time the longitudinal movement of the base on the rails is unrestricted., lt is to be noted that the flanges 42 are detachably secured to the brackets 41 to permit the application or removal of the base to or from the rails. For the purpose of locking the base and seat against longitudinal movement on the rails, l have provided a latch bolt 44: (Figures 1 and il which is movable to engage or disengage any one oli several recesses or openings 4-5 (Figure 2) formed at spaced intervals on one of the rails 15. r-l`he bolt is slidably supported upon the corresponding bracket Ll1 and can be manually moved to projected or retracted position so as to be inserted into or withdrawn from any one ot the openings 415,

As shown in .Figures 1 and 2, that end of the rame'opposite to the end, upon which the platform 19 is mounted is provided with a platform 4G pivotally mounted upon pintles 47 so as to alloyv the platform to occupy an inclined position similar to the platform 23. The platform 46 normally occupies the horizontal position shown in Figurey Q, such position being defined by 'stop pins 48 projecting from tbe inner sides of the rails 15. The platform also carries foot straps 49for securing the feet to tbe platform, as Will be understood. lVhen-employing this platform exercising devices consisting of two coil springs 50 are connected to4 eyes 51 Secured within the rails 15, and these coil springs are provided with hand grips 52.

ln practice, the seat Se of the exercising apparatus is occupied, as illustrated in dash lines in Figure 2, With the feet oi the operator resting on the platform 19 and engaging Within the straps 23. By leaning for- Ward. the operator engages the hand grips 33 so that the elastic cable 2st can. be extended in edecting an exercise of the muscles of the arms, and simultaneously with this operation the operator can, through a manipulationoi the legs, cause the forward or rearward sliding of the seat on the rails in a manner similar to rowing, thereby exercising the arms, legs and back muscles. By virtue of the platform 46 the operator can reverse his position so that his feet are engaged Within the straps 49, and by reaching rearwardly to engage the lhand grips 33 other forms of arm and leg exercise can be effected, as will be understood. lf it is desired to eliminate the body movement of the operator on the apparatus, the seat can be locked against movement by an actuation 'of the bolt 44, as has been described. ln the reverse position of the operator on the seat nerven@ 3l he can also manipulate the spring exercisers 50 in performmg other forms of exer- Although l have herein shown and dcscribed only `one form o exercising apparatus embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modiications may be made herein Without departing from the spirit of, the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, l claim:

l. An exercising apparatus comprising a frame including longitudinal rails and transverse rails intersecting the first rails, a platform at one end of the frame, and an upstanding yoke secured on t-he frame, brace blocks secured between the yoke and platform, foot straps on the platform, a pulley adjustably connected to one of the transverse rails, a pair of puleys mounted on the other transverse rail, a second pair of pulleys pivotally mounted on the yoke directlyabove'the rst pair, an elastic cable trained around all of the pulleys, with its ends extended lbeyond the pivoted pulleys, hand grips on the ends of the cable, a seat mounted for sliding movement on the longitudinal rails, and means for locking the seat against movement on the longitudinal rails and in any adjusted position length- Wise of the rails. i v

2. An exercising apparatus comprising a framev including parallel rails ,having grooves in the confronting sides thereof, a base, rollers carried by the base and engaging the top edge of the rails, brackets depending from the base, rollers carried by the brackets and engaging the inner sides of the rails, strips secured to the brackets and engaging Within the grooves tor preventing upward displacement of the base from the rails, and a seat carried by said base.

3. An exercising apparatus comprising a frame including parallel rails having grooves in the confronting sides thereof, a base, r'ollers carried by the base and engaging the top edge of the rails, brackets depending rom the base, rollers carried by the brackets and engaging the linner sides of the rails, strips-secured to the brackets and engaging Within the grooves for preventing upward displacement of the base from the rails,- a seat carried by said base, one of said rails being formed with recesses, and a slidable bolt carried by the base and engageable' Within any one of said reeessesfor locking thel base and seat against movement on the rai s.
