COMBINED SECTION COUPLING AND STANDING-VALVE-ATTACHING MEANS FOR OIL- I WELL CASINGS.
Application filed April 22, 1924. Serial No. 708,226.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssm J. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Hominy, in the county of Osage and btate of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Section Coupling and Standing-Valve-Attaching Means for Oil-Well Casings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to oil wells, and has more particular reference, to a means whereby the lowermost sections of the well casingmay be rigidly secured together, in a leak proof manner, and whereby the usual standing valve may be disposed within said lowermost section, through the medium of said leak proof securing means.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide means of the above character, wherein the inter-connection of said lowermost well casing section will firmly maintain the standing valve in its proper position, and without any liability of the same becoming disassociated therefrom, and also in such a manner as to prevent leakage between the standing valve and the well casing coupling mechanism.
An additional object is to provide a combined section coupling and standing valve attaching means for oil well casings, that include a pair of cooperative coupling m'embers, between which is disposed a compressible member that is formed with a vertical passageway for the reception of the lower end of the standing valve pipe member, whereby when said coupling members are joined together, said compressible member will be compressed for firmly retaining the pipe of said valve structure within said passageway.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, the figure is a detail vertical sectional vlew of a combined section coupling and standing valve attachment for oil well casings, constructed in accordance with the present invention, the'same being shown as actually in use.
Now having particular reference to the drawings, 5 and 6 designate respectively the lowermost sections of an oil well casing, the adjacent ends of which are externally screw threaded, as shown, for enabling these sections to be rigidly joined together in a leak proof manner through the medium of my present invention. As well known, the lowermost section 5 is provided with a series of circular rows of openings 7, for permit ting the passage of fluid into said lowermost section, in the operation of the usual working valve mechanism of the oil well pump (not shown).
My invention, per se, constitutes the provision of a pair of coupling members designated respectively 8 and 9. The member 8 is in the form of an internally screw threaded gland 9, within which is to be disposed the lower screw threaded opening of said casing section 6, the extreme end of this casing section, adapted for rest upon a shoulder 10, at the upper end of a bevelled opening 11, that is a continuation of the passageway through said gland 9.
The other member 9 of said coupling is substantially identical in construction to the member 8, and is adapted forthe reception, at its lower end, of the screw threaded end, of the lowermost casing section 5. These coupling members 8 and 9 are formed with threaded inter-fitting cuffs 8 and 9 respectively, and adapted for disposition within the cuff 9" of the member 9 is a circular block of compressible material 12, preferably of rubber, that is formed centrally with a vertical passageway 13.
The standing valve, of conventional construction is designated generally 14, and the usual pipe member 15 thereof, is adapted for engagement at its lower end within said opening 13 of the rubber block 12, and it will be obvious that after this end of the pipe has been positioned within the opening of the block, and the coupling members interconnected as shown, this rubber block will be compressed, for rigidly maintaining the pipe 15 of the standing valve 14, within the opening of said block.
The rubber block 12 will not only afford a leak proof joint between the sections 5 and 6 of the well casing, but will also present a leak proof connection for the standing valve 14.
Numerous-advantages of the present invention will be at once appreciated by those shown and described the most practical em bodiment of the invention With which I am at this time familiar, itis nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made Within the invention, Without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim. c
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A coupling comprising inner and outer socket members having crew thread engagement with each other, a block of resilient material located in the socket oi the inner member and clamped therein by an inner Wall surface of the outer member, a pipe passing through the block and fixed at one end in an inner Wall of the inner member, the outer member having an opening through which the said pipe passes and the surface of the pipe being spaced from the surface otthe said openin In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
