To' all whom t may conce-rn:
Be it known that I, ANTON A. Linnms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane County and State of Washington, have invented certain `new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of.
the provision of 'a device ,of this type *adapted for manual'operation which is .simple inv construction and involves the use of amirn'mum number of parts thus rendering 'it possible for inexpensive manufacture and eliminating Vlikelihood of disarrange ment of parts; The several parts of the device are readily detachable to ypermit facile separation and compact arrangement of the parts for storage when not in use, and the parts may with facility be assembled for use when required. Means are provided for preventing leakage of water ory waste of the cleansing liquid and other features of merit arefpresent in the device to enhance its eiiciency and manipulation, as will here inafter be more fully set forth and claimed.
The invention consists in certain novel combinationsand arrangements of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings where I have shown one complete embo`diment of my invention with the parts combined and arranged 'according to the best mode I have thus far devised. for the practical application lof the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view showing a brush and its connections embodying my in-` vention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the de,- vice in side elevation with parts in section for convenience of illustration.
Figure 3 is an enlarged plan view show# ing the locking means ofthe brushhead.
Figure 4 is a. detail sectional view of the head structure and showing the locking means for the head and handle.
In carrying out my invention I utilize a head l of wood or other suitable material Yin thefornr of a flat disk with irninded'edge,l
and an annular, exterior guard ring 2` of rubber 4or other cushioning material 11s Vcured around the exterior central periphery ofthe head. l
Any suitable type'of bristles are used in theforml of tufts 3 for the brush andv .they
Fare secured in the head in approved manner to insure durability and eiliciency-- in the operation of the brush. j
The head "s provided with a` transverse opening or bore l centrally thereof in which a sleeve or, vtubular member 5 is secured, 'said sleeve having aiclosed bottom with lateral perforations 6 for exit of water or othercleansing liquid from the sleeve, and
the upper end-,ofthe sleeve is fashioned, with `an annular seat '5'k that projects above Ythe rear or4 upper face of the head. Y 'At the lower o-r front face ofthe headthe sleeve is secured `therein' by, means of a I fr.
flanged bushing k7 that encases the sleevey and is fixed tov the Vhead in the lower end of the bore 4.,. At the rear-or' top face of thef head aecond bushing Sisfsecured in f the bore and Vembraces the sleeve 5. A This bushing 8 has a flathead plate 9 which is secured to the head by means of screws 10, and on the face of this plate is arranged arpair of opposed integral locking flanges 11 which are Vof arcuate shape and spaced at' diametrically lopposite sides of the axis of the `sleeve 5.y j
The tubular handle 12, by means of which `the'device is manipulated is of suitable length for this purpose, and its lower lbent end is fashioned with a reduced collar 12 that fits neatly into the annular kscat 5l of the sleeve `5 as vindicated in` Figure 4t, to center the handle in the headl when the parts are being 'assembled and to rana un` handle andsleeve in close 'alinement when the "parts" are assembled, thejoint between the parts making a substantial continuation yof Ythe hollow handle for supplying water or other liquid cleanser from rthe handle through the sleeve of the head and thus to the tufts or bristles` of the brush. Y
For locking the lhandle to the 4head I employ a pair 'of opposed. diametrically ar ranged, arcuate 'flanges-13 projecting laterally from the handle for co-action with the overhanging flanges 11 ofthe head plate 9. To insure leak-proof joint between these` parts an .annularv gasket or packing ring 14 is carried by fthe headV under Vthefflanges 13 of the handle, to prevent leakage of' Water from the joint between the handle and sleeve.' It willY be apparent thatk the fhead maybe applied to the handle, or the handle appliedtoV the headfwvith the pairs of complementary loelingfianges dis-- posed at right angles. Then by a quarterturn of one ofv said members With relation to the other .the pairs ofeoniplementary locking flanges are rietionally 'engaged to securely ela-nip the head on the handle.
` To further seourefthe handle'and head against displacement or relative movement While the device is in use I utilize arset screw or'.r bolt l5 Carried in one oi the-anges l1 of the head plateY 9 and Vthreadedl through 'an opening in said platevfor engagement rwith. one of the flanges 1S n/'hie'lrn'iay have a depression or socket in its face as indicated Vat 15 for the reception of the end of the set sei-ew or bolt. Y Y The Water or `liquid eleanser'is supplied tothe device through a flexible pipe or hose 16 and a coupling nut l? is employed to detaehablv Connect the hos-e with the handle. It Will be apparent that rtheseveral parts Vmay be detached with facility, when not required for use, byloosening the nut l?. to
Y disengage the handle'from the hose, andthe head maybe disengaged-*from the handle by ,first loosening Vthe set serevvor loel'bolt 15,"andthen giving theA handle or the head a quarterv tnrn to disengage 'the looking flanges.' f The sleeve 5 is rigidly held in po- .sitio'n at all times in the head by means of the bushings 7 and 8L and `a setV bolt for Having thus fully deseribedniy inventioin What I claim is new and ydesire to secure-by Letters Patent is-k o l. The combination With a brush head Yhaving a distributing sleeve therein, oi? a leollarto it said seat,.and a pair of comple- 'mentary flangesl on said tubular handle for frietional co-aotion With said overhanging flanges. y
3. The Combination with a bruslrhead having a distributing sleeve formed with an annular seat, of a bashing surrounding said sleeve and provided with a head vplate, a pair of opposed'overhanging arenate flanges' on said plate, a tubular handlev having fa .Collar to fit .said seat, afpair roicomple-,
inentary 4flanges on said'handle Jfor eolaetion with the.platelangea'and a set bolt in `a plate-ange' for .eo--aeti'on with one ofthe handle-ianges.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
