E. L. SIMPSON TONE MODIFIER OH SHARPENER FOR DRUMS Filed Sept. 22. 1924 7 INVENTOR M in W 0% aw 242/ q ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 6, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OF-FECE.
EARL L. SIMPSON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGN'OR "IO SAID SIMPSON AND JAMES P. FUNK, TRUSTEES, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
TONE MODIFIER OR SHARPENER FOR DRUMS.
Application filed September 22, 1924. Serial No. 739,166.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL L. SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland,
have invented a new and useful Tone Modifier or Sharpener for Drums, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is the providing a tone-sharpener for drums which may be easily applied and adjusted.
A further object of my invention is the providing of means of attaching a tonesharpener for drums on the exterior of the same.
25 view, my invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herem-after specifically described and illustrated in the accompanymg drawin 's wherein is shown the referred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings of the herein-described embodiment of my invention, Fig. 1 is a view of a bass-drum, partially in section, upon which my tone sharpener is adjustably and detachably secured. Fig. 2 is a View taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of the tone sharpener showing partially the method of attaching the mountings to the same; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged view partially in section of the arm adjusting means.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
1 is the shell of the drum. 2 are the heads. 3 are the rims. 4 is the rim clamp, which is provided with extensions 5 on the inside and 6 on the outside between which extension rim 3 is clamped. The clamping means consists, in the case illustrated, of a screw 7 provided with a head 8 and pressing against compressor plate 9.
On rim clamp 1 is lug 10 through which. locking-bolt 11 passes and carries the same. Locking-bolt 11 is provided with locking-nut 12 and operates in lookingsleeve 13.
In locking-bolt 11 is a hole. 1 1; in lookingsleeve 13 is hole 15. 16 is the arm which in this case consists of a circular rod neatly fitting through holes 14 and 15, and carries on its end an enlarged portion 17 through which screw 18 operates.
Screw 18 is provided with head 19 and is flexibly or adjustably secured in socket 20 to permit a slight angular variation of said socket. Socket 20 is secured to tone sharpener body 21. Over the face of tone sharpener 21 is secured felt 22 of some considerable thickness, which acts as the tone sharpener.
The operation of my invention is as follows: Clamp 4 is secured to the rim of the drum and may be used on either head, some musicians preferring it on the beater head and some on the other head. Arm 16 is adjusted to position the tone sharpener on the head as desired by the musician, or according to the size and character of the drum operated upon, and is carried by the locking bolt 11 and is secured thereto in any desired position by means of the locking-nut 12 and locking-sleeve 13. This securing may be in any position and provides a means of removing the tone sharpener from the head of the drum or adjusting the pressure on the same, as desired, as bolt 11 may be rotated in lug 10.
As a further adjustment, screw 18 is provided to adjust relatively the tone sharpener body 21 and arm 16.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tone modifier for drums comprising, a body provided with means for detachably securing the same to the exterior of a drum by clamping the rim thereof and adjustable means whereby the said body may contact at a predetermined point on a head of said drum, and means of maintaining positive sustained CODi RCiJ between said body and said head.
2. A tone modifier for di'un'is comprising, a body provided with means for maintaining the same at a predetermined point on the exterior surface of a drum head, 1110:1113 Tor regulatin die pressure 0f said body against said drum head, and means for wabbly mounting said body whereby the said body may adjust itself into the plane of the drum-head.
EARL L. SIMPSON.
