UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES AUGUSTIN GALLAND, OF PARIS, FRANCE, ASSIG-NOR TO JOSEPH CHARLES CLAVERING, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
FOLDING STOOL OR TABLE.
Application filed October 16, 1924, Serial No. 743,889, and. in France October 17, 1923.
The present invention relates to improvements in folding stools or tables of the type which the legs for supporting the table or stool top are adapted to collapse within said top.
According to the present invention, the folding stool or table is supported upon pairs of folding legs hinged at opposite ends of a box forming the table or stool top, and within which they may be collapsed to overhe one another. a compression strut or struts being provided hinged to said legs intermediate to their length to lock in the extended position.
The invention will be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the folding chair.
Figure 2 an end view, and
Figure 3 a plan view with the box opened.
The folding chair is composed of the actual seat formed in two parts 1 and 2 con nected together by hinges 3 and 1. When the two parts are folded up on one another they have the appearance of a box which is easily carried by means of a handle 5. Legs 6, 7, 8 and 9, are arranged inside this box and are pivoted to each of the ends of the said box by means of rods 10, 11, 12 and 13. In order to obtain a more comfortable chair the legs are formed in two parts adapted to fold one upon the other. This arrangement enables at the same time a box of smaller dimensions to be obtained. The two parts of each of the legs are interconnected by means of an iron piece 14 formed of two parts interconnected by a pin 15, A stop '16 ensures the assembling of the two parts forming a leg. The rigidity of the whole is obtained by means of pivoted struts 17, 18, 19 and 20, and a hooked bar or strap 21. It is easy by examining the figures of the drawing, to understand the mounting and dismounting of the folding chair; when the latter is to be used the box is opened as is shown in Figure 3, and the extended legs are assembled by the steps 16 and held in place by toggles 17, 18, 19 and 20; they are thus connected two by two by the straps 21.
After the seat has been used it suflices to release the bars or straps 21 from their stop notch, to operate the pivoted toggles 17, 1.8, 19 and 20 to fold up the lower part of each of the legs, and by causing the latter to turn on the rods 10, 11, 12 and 13 to bring them against the bottom of the inside of each of the parts 1. and 2 forming the box; these two parts are then folded together and held by means of any suitable device.
I declare what I claim is A folding stool or table comprising a box formed of two halves, interconnected by means of hinges, two pairs of legs each substantially equal to the width of each box half and cut away towards their outer end, hinges for said legs, leg extensions adapted to lie within said cut away portions when collapsed, and pivots on the outer edge of said legs for said extensions, enabling the latter to be extended in line with the main legs or be collapsed to lie parallel with said main legs.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name this 7th day of September 1924.
CHARLES AUGUSTIN GALLAND.
